monochord of the spheresIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. Any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. (Any question received after then will not get an answer, and will likely just be deleted.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ here.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use the button above to access my online tip jar. If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain other gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I now have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

JMG,

1. I’ve been doing the Middle Pillar consistently every day for about a year, and after each repetition I feel like I just completed a moderately intense workout in terms of the level of exertion involved. I have sweat running down my forehead and feel like I need to lie down for a couple of minutes. Is my etheric body getting activated? Does something similar happen at all levels of being, not just etheric (astral, mental, etc.)?

2. Is discursive meditation valuable even for “cerebral” types who are in their own heads a lot? If you tend to be in a semi-meditative state most of the time, thinking about a topic and drawing associations, do you still stand to gain as much benefit from the practice as someone who is more “in the body”?

3. A common element of occult philosophy is the notion of spiritual improvement through a succession of lifetimes until the soul moves past the human level. However, certain occultists have also talked about humanity as already being a perfect reflection of the macrocosm, since we have all the levels of being represented in us (spiritual, mental, astral, etheric, and physical bodies). In that sense, we are more ‘perfect’ than the angels and gods, who lack physical bodies. Dion Fortune once made a comment along the lines that humanity stands in relation to the angels as a three-year old child stands in relation to a three-year old dog. Is it really an improvement for us to shed the physical body in the next stage of our development? Wouldn't that be a loss of an essential part of ourselves?

4. I’ve been reading through Damien Echols’ book High Magick and one of the thaumaturgical practices he describes is called “Dragon Cultivates the Golden Pearl” and consists of creating a thoughtform, imbuing it with an intention, and releasing it into the universe. I’m curious how this practice relates to evocation of spirits in the GD tradition. Is there a need for evocatory protections (magic circle, asafetida, etc.), and should one refrain from banishing afterwards in order not to cancel out the ritual? Is there a limit to the number of “Golden Pearls” one should have running concurrently?

a) What would you say are the main strengths and weaknesses of the Celtic Golden Dawn in comparison to the Classical Golden Dawn?

b) How do you know if a weird event is an omen? Last week I saw a loon attack a snowy owl, and then the snowy owl charged, attacked a beaver, and then flew away. Since the loon is a symbol of Ontario, the Snowy Owl of Quebec, and the beaver of Canada, I can't help but wonder if it might mean something....

Dear Mr Greer,

I’ve been thinking of your past comments regarding kundalini yoga and how doing it incorrectly can make you drop dead.
This made me wonder if there is a risk of any particular exercise that a person does only once, out of ignorance, that could have dire consequences?

I’m not even thinking of full workings just specific poses or visualizations, not necessarily yoga related. Is there a magical equivalent of playing with a loaded gun?

As a novice I’m want to determine how careful I need to be when looking to try out simple exercises that I read about online.

I hope this question is appropriate for a Magic Monday. I'm unsure because it's astrological but also political.

I have been reading your subscription series on Mundane Astrology, but not doing homework; I have no aspirations in that direction. In the current lesson, you mention that a lunation (moment of conjunction of the moon and sun) can be predictive of events during that lunar cycle depending on what aspects it makes with the ingresses.

I'm wondering whether in retrospect the New Moon of December 2020 gave indications of events at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. However one chooses to characterize the events of that day, they were certainly distinctive and unusual. Would you care to comment?

I just finished reading your book Decline and Fall, published in 2014. In Chapter 10 you wrote, "It's all too easy, in fact, to imagine the steps by which armed insurgents, roadside bombs, military checkpoints, and martial law could become ordinary features of daily life here in America". The insurgents arrived and the military checkpoints remain.

Systems of mental training

Dear JMG,

I saw on Reddit that you replied to someone who combined the practice of recalling one’s day from LRM and Bardon’s IIH with very good results.

I have IIH and am seriously thinking of doing the steps. I don’t necessarily want to go into the full GD system but I find his results with mental training interesting.

Do you think it is still worthwhile for me to get LRM for the mental exercises or do you have other suggestions for a system of mental training?

Thanks

Cosmic Doctrine

Date: 2021-04-19 05:53 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] lunarapprentice
Hello JMG. When you began your bookclub studying the Cosmic Doctrine in June, 2018, I was all ready to jump on-board and get down and dirty with it. But after 3 months, I felt like I was spinning my wheels, and felt too discouraged to continue.

Each month, a new installment would roll by which I would never read, and I would feel rueful. I decided on this April new moon to take it up again.

I assume you recall my flurry of comments over the last month or so relating the ongoing, baleful influence of my dysfunctional upbringing, and my ongoing and new efforts to cope with it, i.e. the deep, inaccessible mental processes that project a shameful self-image, and an invisible “inner saboteur” who tricks me into dysfunctional speech and behavior, resulting in my having few relationships, and the most important ones damaged. I have been able to interpret some key dreams (spanning decades) which I now think give me some traction with this problem.

This has motivated me to re-approach The Cosmic Doctrine. I’m on Chapter 1, and an application to my situation has occurred to me. I seek your guidance as to whether I’m on the right track, or just lost in the weeds:

In this application, I would liken the Ring-cosmos to the pattern of behavior my parents developed after I was born, along with my reactions to them. The Ring Chaos would map to the self-image/self-concept that develops in the child as an outcome of the relationship. The pivoting and arcing, attraction/repulsion between these rings would map to the mutual feedback between parents and child. So the harmful self-image certainly fits as being both Prime Evil and Primeval; and it is also by definition here the “Thrust Block”, the thing I resist on push off from in order to go somewhere else or do something else.

Is my application valid so far? Do you see potential for it being helpful?

The Rule of Threes

Date: 2021-04-19 06:55 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hello, dear man and readers of the dear man,

I've been consulting the I Ching (too much) for the past seven years. Lately, it's really ramped up in its responses references to threes. I know the rule of threes is an ancient and global rule, or law, or pattern-detection. I've been doing a lot of sound energy meditations recently, and trying to be a bit more grown up about allowing the changes I'm desperate for to happen without muddying the waters trying to push what's not ready. I'm wondering if there is a link between the space of energetic creating and the rule of threes?

JMG, as regards your advice two weeks on cultivating the reliving of a key memory of my Aunt’s love, I have been following your advice assiduously. While I have yet to succeed in reliving the memory, it certainly is a pleasant mediation, and I have no difficulty motivating myself to do it. I have been able to connect some other, more diffuse recollections of my experiences with my Aunt with this dream (referenced in my comment 2 weeks ago), and I’ve also come to recognize some odd associations of positive emotions (a feeling of being loved) with certain places, objects, smells, sounds, environments and such; all of these associations arise from childhood experiences with my Aunt.

Already, I’ve realized benefits. I no longer get angry when my daughters act out, even in outrageous ways. I not only don’t act angry, I don’t feel angry. Our interactions have become less tense. Just yesterday, my younger daughter (10) asked me to take just her on a hike in the mountains, a first! My daughters and I have had several meals out, which is not new, but my older daughter actually conversed with me rather than sitting absorbed in her smart-phone, and both of them giving me advice on how to be more “with it”. My former wife has noticed the improvement, and said that whatever I’m doing now, she wished I were doing it years ago. Even her dog gets more exited when I come by.

I’m also following your suggestion a month or so back to read Dion Fortune’s novels. I’ve finished The Secrets of Dr. Taverner, and of course The Goat Foot God, and am well into The Winged Bull. For me, these novels feel significant, pertinent, and appropriate. Several of the main characters seem much like me. (I started The Demon Lover, but found the main characters, Veronica and Lucas, so lacking in relatability or even believability, that I set it aside.) I can’t say I’ve processed this reading, or had any result, but again, it feels valuable. Actually, there is one result: I have made the acquaintance of Pan, he now has a place in my shrine/alter, and a role in my MPE.

To date, I have far more to show from my modest occult studies and practice than from years of counseling, thanks in large part to all your writing JMG. Thank you.

Hi JMG

I feel like the answer to this will be something like "that's normal, keep going" but here goes anyway:
I've recently noticed a persistent sense of "expansiveness" similar to being up a mountain looking out over a mountain range, but this is while sitting at the dining table or whenever I focus on it.
1: I'm wondering if this is an opening up of the inner senses, or possibly the "air-headedness" I've hear that you get by focusing on the spiritual too much. I don't think I'm overdoing anything though. My practice consists of daily SOP every day for the past year and almost every day for about 6 years, inconsistent meditation and divination , prayer a few times a week for blessings and guidance to learn the lessons I need to learn. I've recently added the cell salts regime and etheric banishing exercise which seem to have kicked things up a gear too. Beyond that it's the path of the hearth fire as a single dad.

2: Would praying for guidance/lessons/life direction from your higher self be productive? I'm not 100% comfortable with giving up my autonomy to a god, although I'm pray for divine help in many things, and I know that my lower self is not wise enough to know the right path. So does expressing an intention through prayer for the will of my higher self to be done sound like a good idea and would it be worth incorporating into the SOP in some way?

3: Regarding growth of the self over reincarnations, would you expect IQ as the measure of ability to deal with abstract concepts to grow over the course of many lives? I expect that there could be lives where brain damage or something similar could act to interrupt that, so if all things are about equal would IQ grow with the development of the mental body?

4: Regarding the cell salt regime, the brand that I've acquired has one pill per adult dose and comes in diamond shaped pills. So going by 6 pills per adult dose from your original article I would need to take a 1/6th dose of one of the salts. How critical are the dosages in absolute and relative terms. Can I round up the 1/6 dose to 1/4, round the 1/3 dose to 1/2 and keep the 1/2 dose as it is? Am I also correct assuming that handling the pill and cutting it with a steel knife will be fine?

Many thanks for your gracious help to all of us. May the gods bless you.

Hey JMG,

here in Germany there was a semi famous Jesuit called Franz Jalics.

He died recently at the age of 93 after a quite colourful life: He was born in a noble family in Hungary, trained to fight in a German tank crew in WWII, became a displaced person after the war, became a Jesuit priest, went to Latin America in the sixties, became a liberation theologican in the seventies (got imprisoned and tortured in Argentina for a year for being a suspected communist)- then he went back to Germany in the eighties and found a meditation centre.

I read his book on meditation "contemplative exercises" (400 pages, I don't know if there are English translations) and some things popped up that sounded at least vaguely occult-ish. He presents a 10 day meditation programme, basically it runs like this:

1. Spend a full day in nature, no reading, no writing, no music, only perception of the natural world

2. sitting for 20 to 25 minutes (8 times/day) breathing, perceiving/following the way the air takes from nose to the stomach

3.sitting with hands folded (classical prayer gesture), concentrating on the centre of the palms and what can be felt there

4. (basically same as #3)

5. with your inner voice say/project "Yes" into the palms of your folded hands (Here he talks about currents of energy running through the body that one might by now be able to feel.

6. (same as #5, now with "Mary" instead of "Yes")

7. (as above, with every outbreath think "Jesus", with every inbreath think "Christ")

8. (as #7),
9. (as #7),
10. (as #7)

What is he doing here? As an occult layman I can at least make out that he channels energy into the palm chakras, then connects them somehow with Mary and Jesus maybe? I think besides "currents of energy" he also mentions that paranormal phenomena might occur during meditation but one should ignore them, sadly I can't find the exact quote now.
He also recomments going to mass daily during this programme, maybe as a protective measure?

As an expert, what do you think is going on there?

Thank you!

Heya,

I was wondering, I am unusually sensitive and intuitive (not sure if there is a flaw with my subtle bodies or if this is just natural for me, my children are also extremely sensitive) but I was wondering about lower astral energies. I can tell when events are going to start unfolding by the negative energy that often builds up before a series of events, and also by where in my energy field it builds up and its nature (for example an approaching death of a loved one from the root chakras or the irritation and inability to ground pre earthquakes etc). Quite often this seems like a pointless exercise of awareness, although sometimes it does allow me to behave defensively. I guess I was wondering if there is a better way to deal with the energy when it comes in, or is it that lower astral energies have to ground in to material to disperse and all I can do is try and navigate it?

My dreams, again

Hi JMG,

I think this might be a question for a druid. Do trees care where particular human individuals live? I had a dream where the Karri forests in south-west West Australia were talking to me and telling me I had to move to Albany (in West Australia). I said I couldn't do that and then they started singing that Paul Kelly song, "From Little Things, Big Things Grow" (I'll just point out Karri trees are already pretty big.) and they said, "we know how to wait", which is also part of that song. Now there are psychological reasons I would have that dream - my sister is moving there, I'll miss her, etc. But I'm 100% sure that was a true dream and the trees were talking to me. Do you know why they would care where a particular individual lives?

Afflicting or afflicted?

I’ve spent some time over the last week staring at a mundane astrology chart that presaged a major event in UK political history. I drew up the chart and nearly jumped out of my skin; its been several years and this sort of thing still makes me jump. There’s a grand cross that includes Saturn near the MC in the 10th house.

The three other planets are not malefic and as the events played out, all three showed the impact of severe affliction but the mundane elements Saturn represents did not.

This raises the question in my mind about what it means for a malefic to be square or in opposition to another planet. Ultimately house placement would have to be taken into account but as a rule of thumb if a malefic is in opposition or square to a benefic should I be considering whether it’s the malefic that’s doing the afflicting?

Today I appear to be the Écru Senescent Snail. How appropriate. Thanks for MM.

Nine questions

Date: 2021-04-19 10:52 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG,

A few more random questions for you this week, if you don't mind answering?

1) Do you have any idea what the intention behinds beds of nails in Eastern traditions was? Aside from a sideshow act and indication of 'mind over matter', it would seem like it's putting a few dozen holes in your etheric body - why would you want to do that?

2) Kind of more of a data point for you, but whirlpool baths and hot tubs are now being recommended for fibromyalgia (which is the medical term for "you seem to be in a lot of pain and aren't obviously making it up, but damned if we know why"), and many patients are getting a lot of relief from them - it seems to me like they are essentially cleaning the patients' etheric bodies with air and water, which may be where the true problem lies.

3) Is there any karma (positive or negative) which comes from banishing? You are technically cleaning the place up a bit, which is great for you, but in the process surely driving the things which live there out of their homes? (I mean this only as a thought experiment, not a reason not to banish)

4) Is there meant to be any occult difference between nose and mouth breathing? Do they activate different chakras or similar?

5) I came across a quote the other week along the lines of "Only humans imitate other animals" (probably slightly paraphrased). I'm not 100% sure this is true (ever heard of a mimic octopus?) but from a post on here last week, I was thinking about how humans do not have the 'group intellect' you mentioned, and therefore maybe look for those of animals to copy?

6) Do you know why Eastern traditions do not use the telluric current? Like the meditation position being intended to cut oneself off from it by taking the feet off the ground.

7) From one of your posts on the circuits of force within the body, I have noticed that I always entwine one of my legs around the other when seated, or have one leg underneath me. I don't know why, and it's actually slightly uncomfortable to do for long peiods, but I wonder if I'm subconsciously trying to 'complete a circuit'?

8) I keep waking up at 4.30 - 4.40am at the moment (often 4.33). We recently changed to British summer time, which makes it technically 3.33am. I dimly remember that 3 - 4am used to be known as the Witching hour. Do you know what, in practice, that actually means? I used to get this happening quite a lot before I started banishing, but it seems to have started again in the last few weeks.

9) Do you have any resources on which emotional states and personality types appear to correlate with certain diseases?

Thank you!

Mister Crow

1. Accupuncture like you mean it! :)

5. When we had chickens, wild birds started scratching the ground and pecking it like they did. There's also a video on Youtube of a family with a pet meerkat. Their sphinx cat copied it's upright stnding posture.

8. That period of waking in the night is called segmented sleep or the pre-industrial sleep pattern. Like a siesta in reverse, it's altered state of consciousness is considered a particularly good time for sex and religious experiences. :) General advice is to not worry and enjoy it. Compensate with afternoon naps if the sleep loss is a problem. I also noticed it happening less once I started the SoP.

Assuming that other factors are held constant (the continued use of holy water, no changes to the divine names), couldn't Mass conducted in other languages eventually build up to a powerful egregore, like the Latin Mass? Or could they even fuse? With population increase, there are surely more Catholics than ever before, more churches, and more ceremonies being conducted each week. Thank you.
From: [personal profile] robertmathiesen
The Roman Catholloc Mass has also been conducted in Church Slavonic (in the Roman Catholic half of the Balkans and Eastern Europe) ever since the late 800s, which is plenty long enough for it to "build up an egregore" (if that's the best way to talk about what gives the Mass its real power). Catholics who attend the Church Slavonic Mass seem to find it every bit as powerful as the Latin Mass.

The other day it occurred to me that I could put up a chapter a week on Patreon and, God willing, make money quicker and serve readers better; if they want more, or less, General Nuisance, or Puppy of Tindalos, or whatever, I can put in details accordingly as I move along. If I do that, what’s the best planetary day and hour to sign up with Patreon?

Sir and Druid, a calculatory data point and a question:

1) If greatest conjunctions are roughly every 800 years when a great conjunction first occurs in Aries, and if ~1879 is the beginning of the preumbra of the Aquarian age, and if ~1707 was the the last greatest conjunction of the Piscean age, and if precession of the equinoxes is roughly 1 degree every 79 years.

Then ~2507 is the next greatest conjunction that marks the formal beginning of the Aquarian age. Then then the ~628 year interval between ~1879 and ~2507 divides evenly by the 1 degree/79 year precessional rate to yield an 8 degree orb from preumbra of the Age to the formal beginning by greatest conjunction. Applied to the Picean age, this results in the preumbral beginning of the Piscean age to be ~511 BC.

2) The Piscean age after its formal beginning started with a period of destruction of many traces of the Arian age, traces hidden away as occult lore that are laboriously being reconstructed in the present time. If the same phenomenon is to occur in the Aquarian age, what parts of the Piscean age would you like to see preserved through until the Capricornian age?

My daughter is moving into her first apartment and I'd like to give it a cleaning before she moves in. Given that I'm only on lesson 11 of LRM I suspect rituals are out but perhaps there is a basic wash of some sort to use? The place has a good vibe to it (and the building too which was a pleasant surprise when we visited), so not trying to remove any maleficent energy of any kind.

Thank you so much.

Good day JMG.
I have been doing Judson's exercises for several days now shortly after I do the SOP and am quite satisfied with the results. I would like your opinion on whether Judson's exercise would be something that would work for children and whether it would be safe for them to learn?
