Magic Monday
Sep. 1st, 2024 11:09 pm
Midnight is here, and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note: Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.1 of The Magic Monday FAQ here. Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says. And further: I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.
The image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book above was my forty-second published book and my second co-translation. I'd been grumbling for years about the dismal quality of A.E. Waite's translation of Lévi's masterpiece, that led to a freewheeling discussion on my blog, and Mark Mikituk, who at that time made his living translating French into English, contacted me and suggested a joint translation. I took him up on it. At that time I happened to have a personal connection with the editor of TarcherPenguin's occult line, and decided to see if I could evade the usual corporate-publisher barriers and approach him directly, instead of having to go through an agent, etc.; this once, it worked, and once Mark and I had finished our translation it was picked up by TarcherPenguin for a nice advance.
The book itself -- well, what can I say? It's the theme of my current monthly book club posts over on the blog; it's the most important and influential work on magic to appear in the 19th century, and it defines much of the occult revival since its publication (no surprises there, since it basically launched that revival). I don't think it's possible to understand modern occultism without having at least some acquaintance with this book. If you're interested, you can order a copy here in the United States and from your favorite online retailer or full service bookstore elsewhere.
Buy Me A Coffee
Ko-Fi
I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here.
I've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online. And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.
With that said, have at it!
***This Magic Monday is now closed, and no more comments will be put through. See you next week!***
Completed Dolmen Arch Lesser Mysteries and Sharing Eirik Westcoat's American Futharch
Date: 2024-09-02 04:08 am (UTC)If you're an American, I hope you're enjoying the long weekend!
To Share: 1. Well, it only took me 2 years, but I have completed the Lesser Mysteries of the Dolmen Arch course, and have begun the Gradd y Gwyddon y Ffordd! I'm excited at what I have already learned, and to see what unfolds as I keep along the path. Many thanks, JMG, for putting together this remarkable course.
2. I wrote up a short post in response to what strikes me as a very interesting insight from Eirik Westcoat about the origins of the Runes and why they have the order they do. Also, he made up a new Futharch custom tailored to modern American English, with full intention of it working for meditation, magic, and divination (he's a master of the Rune Gild, so there's a least a decent chance he got that right): https://jpowellrussell.com/#eirik_westcoat_and_the_american_futharch
No question tonight, as I'd like to focus on my gratitude above.
Thank you again, JMG and everyone here!
My blessings to all who welcome them,
Jeff

Date: 2024-09-02 04:08 am (UTC)JMG - Thanks for reminding me of Johnny Appleseed. I'm now thinking of getting a bit of apple tree wood and trying to carve a figurine of him for my altar. I've never done woodcarving before, so it might be an occasion to learn a new skill.
I'm wondering if anyone here has other such deities, demigods, and heroes to recommend for an American pantheon? I've had a growing interest in trying to incorporate more of these holy figures into my spiritual practice. JMG has previously mentioned JFK having some worshipers but when I do a Google search for any information, I just keep getting articles that focus on his religious life as a Roman Catholic.

Date: 2024-09-02 04:10 am (UTC)If I missed anybody, or if you would like to add a prayer request for yourself or anyone who has given you consent (or for whom a relevant person holds power of consent) to the list, please feel free to leave a comment below and/or in the comments at the current prayer list post.
This week I would like to bring special attention to the following prayer requests.
May Giulia (Julia) in the Eastern suburbs of Cleveland Ohio be healed of recurring seizures and paralysis of her left side and other neurological problems associated with a cyst on the right side of her brain and with surgery to treat it.
May Tyler and Monika's newborn baby Isabelle, whose bowels were not moving properly at birth, be blessed with a well functioning digestive tract and be free of colic going forward.
May Falling Tree Woman's son's girlfriend's mother Bridget in Devon UK, who has recently started to sit up and converse after more than six weeks of bedridden tracheotomy following a life-threatening fall from a horse, be blessed and healed and returned to full health.
May Corey Benton, whose throat tumor has grown around an artery and won't be treated surgically, be healed of throat cancer.
May Heather's brother in law, Patrick, who is dying of cancer and has dementia, go gentle into that good light. And may his wife Maggie, who is ill herself, find the strength and peace she needs for her situation. (Update on Patrick's condition here)
May Neptune's Dolphins' husband David, who lost one toe to a staph infection last year and now faces further toe amputations due to diabetic ulcers in his left foot, be blessed and healed, and may the infection leave his body for good.
May Rebecca, who has just been laid off from her job and is the sole provider for her family, quickly discover a viable means to continue to support her family; may she and her family be blessed and sustained in their journey forward.
May Kyle's friend Amanda, who though in her early thirties is undergoing various difficult treatments for brain cancer, make a full recovery; and may her body and spirit heal with grace.
Lp9's hometown, East Palestine, Ohio, for the safety and welfare of their people, animals and all living beings in and around East Palestine, and to improve the natural environment there to the benefit of all.
Guidelines for how long prayer requests stay on the list, how to word requests, how to be added to the weekly email list, how to improve the chances of your prayer being answered, and several other common questions and issues, are to be found at the Ecosophia Prayer List FAQ.
If there are any among you who might wish to join me in a bit of astrological timing, I pray each week for the health of all those with health problems on the list on the astrological hour of the Sun on Sundays, bearing in mind the Sun's rulerships of heart, brain, and vital energies. If this appeals to you, I invite you to join me.

Date: 2024-09-02 04:26 am (UTC)JMG, you discussed archetypes a couple of MMs before, where you said they were the psychic reflections of the instinct patterns that we use to look at reality so to speak, and the "noeta" are the external mental objects, perceptions (perhaps even spirits?).
I wanted to ask you to share more about the self archetype. Does the non-dual experience / loss of narrativity that happens after a kundalini awakening come from it? Is it the same thing as keter or tipereth on the tree of life? How exactly does it activate and work? Is the full activate the end of material incarnation?
Lastly, how does the god image relate to the self if the god image arises out of the base archetypes first?
Re: Q

Pledge to say the Pledge
Date: 2024-09-02 04:27 am (UTC)I'm just dropping in to remind everyone of the Pledge to say the Pledge. It's a daily ritual I am doing for a year. I face the American flag or an image of the American flag and say my polytheist adaptation of the Pledge of Allegiance:
I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands
Great nation, under gods, indestructible
With liberty and justice for all
I especially enjoy saying the Pledge when I delete political spam texts on my smartphone. It is extremely satisfying.

As an aside, my reading of Shaw's works on Iamblichus suggest that Krebs/Kerning's mysticism may be more theurgic in some respects too.
A question for the commentariat: has anyone had experience with the Quareia system of Josephine McCarthy? It looks to me to be pedagogically sound in approach, with a 'make haste slowly' feel to it. I'm interested to know how someone who has at least started it would comment.

The same thing can be applied to the theory that we come from alien planets or species, what if the consciousness was transplanted from other time/space using magic on this planets, something similar is described in Isa Upanishad and other religious text, where they saw the animal and chose it for consciousness transplatation.
Maybe this is why we are astrologicaly determined as a species because we had to know where and when we had to arrive.

Meditation on this offered the idea of an offering to Belisama at dawn burning a yellow candle. Maybe a bowl of seeds?
Water likewise would be at dusk to Sirona with a blue candle. A bit more stuck for an offering as there's already a bowl of water on the altar - a piece of salmon? But would the salmon of wisdom be impressed??

Date: 2024-09-02 09:50 am (UTC)No questions today (at least not until now... ;-), just two offers for the community:
1. I'm going to perform a Healer attunement for Modern Order of Essenes practitioners on Sunday, September 22nd.
The attunement is open to everybody who has done the necessary work, both first-timers and re-attuners. Note that I require at least one RSVP. The details can be found here:
https://thehiddenthings.com/moe-healer-attunement-2024-09
2. And for everybody: I will again perform a formal blessing on Wednesday. If you'd like to be included, please sign up here:
https://thehiddenthings.com/weekly-blessings-35
(I very much enjoy this work, and people do me a favour by signing up because I get to practice, so please don't be shy even if you feel that you don't have any "serious request"!)
....
In general, I feel that the MOE has somehow fallen out of people's sights a bit, compared to the excitement when JMG first posted it. That's a pity, as the work is very rewarding and does truly change one's life.
If any of you are curious, or have been hesitating, or maybe you started and then fell off the bandwagon... I'd be happy to answer your questions, or discuss things with you.
Please feel free to post your questions or concerns as comments to the attunement anouncement on my site (linked above). If there should be a lot of uptake, I might open a dedicated post for this.
JMG, I hope this shameless plug doesn't count as objectionable advertising. ;-) All the best to you, and my blessings if you will have them,

One set of sources that almost nobody pays attention to are the Collectanea Hermetica, a set of short books edited by Westcott and studied by GD members. You can download the whole set free of charge here:

I've been told that there's an edition of the original 1888 rituals in production -- those are very different from the ones Regardie used -- and that will be a major contribution once it appears. I'd like, though, to see someone just dump the whole kit and caboodle online, or turn it into a big anthology and publish it, instead of squatting on it all like a toad on a cow turd and thinking that makes them important.

Zodiacal timing
Date: 2024-09-02 12:33 pm (UTC)Somehow I've never read or heard you mention this topic so here I am.
I've recently been discussing magical timing with someone. Your Encyclopedia of Natural Magic describes the three main methods of timing: The Solar season cycles, Lunar phase cycles and planetary hours. They all make sense and are easy to explain and incorporate.
Tracking the Moon and the rest of the planets through the signs of the Zodiac is where some confusion begins. I am a Westerner, interested in Western occultism and all that comes with it. The difference is I study Vedic Astrology over Western, so I use the Sidereal system.
This question isn't exactly Tropical VS Sidereal Astrology, as it is clear both systems work. However, for timing, Sidereal seems to make the most sense to me. The fact that it is more accurate...
I'm aware that you use Western Tropical for astrological divination. But what about in this situation? Which one do you use? Why that one over the other?
I'd appreciate anything else you could add to the Tropical VS Sidereal debate. It is something that comes up in conversation quite regularly for me.
Thank you for your time, I am very grateful for all the work that you do.

Date: 2024-09-02 12:52 pm (UTC)Hi JMG et al,
Wanted to share this article that found its way to me yesterday, linked below. It's an excerpt from an American anthropologist's novel based on her experiences in Laos, doing field work related to the aftermath of the Secret War. It has some good stuff about Lao folk practices and the dead. In the excerpt, characters make an offering of food and incense to appease 'hungry ghosts' who received no funeral rites. The narrator's travelling companion, a local, comments something like "it is good that you are here... Americans have a lot of hungry ghosts that go unfed."
Then they mention a Lao festival of the dead, Boun Haw Khao Padapdin. I looked up timing of the festival: "the 14th day of the waning moon of the ninth month of Buddhist calendar."
This year, that's today.

From:Interpreting a symbol
Date: 2024-09-02 02:30 pm (UTC)(1) I was wondering if you would have anything interesting to say about the central symbol of the famous Neverending Story book.
It is initially presented as a gold necklace with two serpents, one dark and one light, biting each other's tails, in the shape of an oval. It is called Auryn.
The bearer of this jewel can have any wish granted in the realm of fantasy, and the purpose of this path of (make-believe) wishes is to find one's True Will in the real world. The fantasy creatures will be guided and protected by it, but apparently have no free will of their own.
Near the end of the book, the main character goes inside the Auryn, which is now a large golden cave/hall/dome, where two giant serpents (one white, one black) bite each other's tails, encircling the waters of life.
I understand that the Ouroboros, a single serpent biting its own tail, represents the Astral light. What would change if there are two, one black and one white? What is the connection between this and the two pillars, Joachim and Boaz? Or is it all just random gibberish?
(2) in a related line of thought, what would happen if someone actually decided to follow some random gibberish as a spiritual path? Would it be possible for someone with some innate talent to turn just about anything into a useful path?

Date: 2024-09-02 03:02 pm (UTC)I saw last week that there is an FHR Temple starting up in Providence. When it comes to temple work, what if some of the members practice the LRP and others the SOP? I remember you saying that practitioners that do one of the rituals should not do the other. What would be the best solution for such a scenario?
Best Regards,
Ian
