Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book above was my forty-second published book and my second co-translation. I'd been grumbling for years about the dismal quality of A.E. Waite's translation of Lévi's masterpiece, that led to a freewheeling discussion on my blog, and Mark Mikituk, who at that time made his living translating French into English, contacted me and suggested a joint translation.  I took him up on it. At that time I happened to have a personal connection with the editor of TarcherPenguin's occult line, and decided to see if I could evade the usual corporate-publisher barriers and approach him directly, instead of having to go through an agent, etc.; this once, it worked, and once Mark and I had finished our translation it was picked up by TarcherPenguin for a nice advance.

The book itself -- well, what can I say? It's the theme of my current monthly book club posts over on the blog; it's the most important and influential work on magic to appear in the 19th century, and it defines much of the occult revival  since its publication (no surprises there, since it basically launched that revival). I don't think it's possible to understand modern occultism without having at least some acquaintance with this book. Congratulations. Back when I was teaching the Dolmen Arch system as a correspondence course, not much more than five per cent of the people who started the course ever got to the Greater Mysteries, so you're one of the few. Now, onto bigger and better things!

Continuing the discussion of American gods from last week: Robert Mathiesen mentioned an interesting replica of Columbia made from some ground-up marble stone from the US Capitol building. JMG - Thanks for reminding me of Johnny Appleseed. I'm now thinking of getting a bit of apple tree wood and trying to carve a figurine of him for my altar. I've never done woodcarving before, so it might be an occasion to learn a new skill.

I'm wondering if anyone here has other such deities, demigods, and heroes to recommend for an American pantheon? I've had a growing interest in trying to incorporate more of these holy figures into my spiritual practice. JMG has previously mentioned JFK having some worshipers but when I do a Google search for any information, I just keep getting articles that focus on his religious life as a Roman Catholic.

It might make a very good theme for meditation and study -- look for medical theories treatments, and pharmaceuticals that appeared with a vast amount of hype and overblown expectations, failed to live up to them, and trickled away in general disappointment and failure. (Come to think of it, that's most of post-1930 medicine...)

JMG, you discussed archetypes a couple of MMs before, where you said they were the psychic reflections of the instinct patterns that we use to look at reality so to speak, and the "noeta" are the external mental objects, perceptions (perhaps even spirits?).

I wanted to ask you to share more about the self archetype. Does the non-dual experience / loss of narrativity that happens after a kundalini awakening come from it? Is it the same thing as keter or tipereth on the tree of life? How exactly does it activate and work? Is the full activate the end of material incarnation?

Lastly, how does the god image relate to the self if the god image arises out of the base archetypes first?

1) You're running a lot of semi-related and unrelated things together here. The archetype of the Self is simply the psychic reflection of the instinct-pattern for wholeness -- it's the archetype that manifests itself through any form of unity of being or wholeness of self. That can happen in many different ways and on many different levels, and no two people experience its activation in the same way. The one of these questions I can answer simply is that the archetype of the self is Tiphareth. The three supernals, and Kether above all, cannot be defined or approached or understood by any created being.

2) The image is not the reality. The image the god takes on arises from the archetype, but who created the archetype?

Pledge to say the Pledge

I'm just dropping in to remind everyone of the Pledge to say the Pledge. It's a daily ritual I am doing for a year. I face the American flag or an image of the American flag and say my polytheist adaptation of the Pledge of Allegiance:

I especially enjoy saying the Pledge when I delete political spam texts on my smartphone. It is extremely satisfying.

2nd thing I have to report is that after a dialogue session with my higher self facilitated by a spiritual master, it was confirmed to me that I hit a kundalini awakening in my last life and died soon after, and that's why I've gone through 7 years of straight hell (including nearly dying multiple times) starting age 25, and now, at 32, my kundalini awakening in this lifetime is finishing up. My physical body still needs a lot of repair though, I almost lost my legs.

Apparently my body was ready from spiritual practice last time, but not this time, and that's why my symptoms were so intense.

To share: my ongoing very rough translation of Franz Dornseiff's Das Alphabet in Mystik und Magie (1922) has reached its 6th monthly instalment!.

On my personal front, I have been working on my letter practice, but still thinking through how to assess my progress, and indeed wondering whether thinking in terms of progress would be misleading. As an aside, my reading of Shaw's works on Iamblichus suggest that Krebs/Kerning's mysticism may be more theurgic in some respects too.

A question for the commentariat: has anyone had experience with the Quareia system of Josephine McCarthy? It looks to me to be pedagogically sound in approach, with a 'make haste slowly' feel to it. I'm interested to know how someone who has at least started it would comment.

1. The angels of the sephirots are still the same as the angels of the planets viz. Tzadkiel for Chesed/Jupiter, Kamael for Geburah/Mars, Michael for Tipharath/Sun. How can the same angels of the planets (who are astrological) be non-astrological in the sephirots?

2. Kundalini was mentioned. Can kundalini awakening be avoided and enlightenment still be had? Be enlightenment, I mean the end of physical reincarnation by realising the truth that there is no 'I' or 'others'.

3. Is traveling in spirit vision the same as scrying in spirit vision?

4. Meditation makes me feel cold, distant and not like 'myself'. Should I continue?

1) You're mistaking the names for the forces they represent. Have you considered approaching the names as formulae instead?

2) Kundalini is only one of many options. The kind of nondualist formula you give in the second sentence is also only one of many options.

3) No. The difference is like that between going to a place and watching a live cam of the same place.

4) Yes, and you should explore your reaction to it.

A problem of magic and consciousness.

I saw a reply on the Open Thread of ecosophia, that responded to an ancient aircraft question that had a persian picture that could be interpreted as a picture of an airplane. One explanation was that they saw one.

But I am thinking what if they didn't see the plane but they practiced something tantamount to remote viewing and they saw it in another time/space.

The same thing can be applied to the theory that we come from alien planets or species, what if the consciousness was transplanted from other time/space using magic on this planets, something similar is described in Isa Upanishad and other religious text, where they saw the animal and chose it for consciousness transplatation.
Maybe this is why we are astrologicaly determined as a species because we had to know where and when we had to arrive.

For the one image, possibly, but Indian and Chinese sources have detailed descriptions of people seeing such craft in flight, and talk about the particular part of Asia that they come from. Yes, you could argue that everybody involved was engaged in remote viewing -- but by the same logic, you could insist that everyone who sees a Boeing plane now is doing the same thing...

In a recent CGD pathworking, my guide said I needed "more air and water, to be more fluid" (I'm a double earth sign.) She advised "cultivate with offerings".

Meditation on this offered the idea of an offering to Belisama at dawn burning a yellow candle. Maybe a bowl of seeds?

Water likewise would be at dusk to Sirona with a blue candle. A bit more stuck for an offering as there's already a bowl of water on the altar - a piece of salmon? But would the salmon of wisdom be impressed??

I’m interested in learning more about original/primary source Golden Dawn materials—there’s Regardie’s work, and the Flying Rolls, but are there other documents I should be aware of?

Regardie's work isn't primary. He had a collection of papers from the Stella Matutina, one of the GD's successor orders, and he constructed the Big Gray Brick out of that raw material. The knowledge lectures, now finally available in a complete and unedited collection, are primary, but most of the people who have copies of the rest of the original papers are sitting on them and refusing to let anyone else have access to them. When I was editing Regardie's book, I sent out an open letter inviting people to contribute to an improved version, and got very, very little response -- and next to none from those who have original sources. It was frankly sad. (And of course some of those people are now sniping at my edition of the book online, insisting that it's inadequate. Well, folks, you had your chance to help...)

R.G. Torrens' The Secret Rituals of the Golden Dawn and The Inner Teachings of the Golden Dawn are also secondary sources based on original texts, but they're worth comparing to Regardie's work.

One set of sources that almost nobody pays attention to are the Collectanea Hermetica, a set of short books edited by Westcott and studied by GD members. You can download the whole set free of charge here:

I've been told that there's an edition of the original 1888 rituals in production -- those are very different from the ones Regardie used -- and that will be a major contribution once it appears. I'd like, though, to see someone just dump the whole kit and caboodle online, or turn it into a big anthology and publish it, instead of squatting on it all like a toad on a cow turd and thinking that makes them important.

(Yes, I know. I get grumpy about this subject.)

Platonic Solids

To share: The Way of the Golden Section includes exercises for constructing the Platonic Solids. To supplement those instructions, I acquired the book Building Platonic Solids¹ which I want to recommend. It's not much more than a large pamphlet, but gives clear compass-and-straightedge techniques that include additional panels and tabs that cover up the solids' seams and give the constructions more structural integrity. I am very pleased with the results:



To ask: Ecosophia's comments have multiple references to the use of geometric designs as a defense against demons and malefic entities (the esteemed kimberlysteele has posted in detail on the subject). Would 3D objects share this power? Or are the designs too simple?

¹Bibliographic data for this book are a little weird. I have the second edition, which appears to be a print-on-demand work but I only see second-hand print copies available for sale online. It's credited to "Sympsionics Design," copyright Päivi Halmekoski, published by Deltaspektri, 2015.

Zodiacal timing

Somehow I've never read or heard you mention this topic so here I am.

I've recently been discussing magical timing with someone. Your Encyclopedia of Natural Magic describes the three main methods of timing: The Solar season cycles, Lunar phase cycles and planetary hours. They all make sense and are easy to explain and incorporate.
Tracking the Moon and the rest of the planets through the signs of the Zodiac is where some confusion begins. I am a Westerner, interested in Western occultism and all that comes with it. The difference is I study Vedic Astrology over Western, so I use the Sidereal system.

This question isn't exactly Tropical VS Sidereal Astrology, as it is clear both systems work. However, for timing, Sidereal seems to make the most sense to me. The fact that it is more accurate...

I'm aware that you use Western Tropical for astrological divination. But what about in this situation? Which one do you use? Why that one over the other?
I'd appreciate anything else you could add to the Tropical VS Sidereal debate. It is something that comes up in conversation quite regularly for me.

I try to avoid all such debates, because -- appropriately enough for astrology! -- they go round in circles, occasionally doing a retrograde motion, but never actually getting anywhere.

I use tropical astrology for all purposes and I find that it works. Of course your mileage may vary!

Wanted to share this article that found its way to me yesterday, linked below. It's an excerpt from an American anthropologist's novel based on her experiences in Laos, doing field work related to the aftermath of the Secret War. It has some good stuff about Lao folk practices and the dead. In the excerpt, characters make an offering of food and incense to appease 'hungry ghosts' who received no funeral rites. The narrator's travelling companion, a local, comments something like "it is good that you are here... Americans have a lot of hungry ghosts that go unfed."

Then they mention a Lao festival of the dead, Boun Haw Khao Padapdin. I looked up timing of the festival: "the 14th day of the waning moon of the ninth month of Buddhist calendar."

I've been doing the Heathen LBRP and Middle Pillar for a few years now, and my once severe arachnophobia is gone, like ashes in the wind. For example I no longer reflexively kill huntsmen spiders in fight or flight, but calmly catch them and take them outside. Noticed this the other day, when I felt nothing on a spider encounter that was absolutely freaking out a relative.

It occurs to me that I used to have a lot of fears, too -- I was kind of neurotic by the time I finally got through with childhood -- and those got lost somewhere in my early adult years. I hadn't thought of that as a product of the LBRP and Middle Pillar, but it makes sense!

Do you use the planets Uranus and Neptune in your readings, or do you only use the pre-1781 planets up to Saturn?

Although she only appears rarely in your writings, and although you are still grieving, I have always liked to read about Sara, as her "light" always came through so strongly. And, so I hope you will entertain the following question, and not find it too cheeky.

You have separately mentioned the long-standingness of your own meditation practice, and also of Sara's. I have been wondering whether Sara introduced medition to John, or John to Sara, or were Sara and John already both regularly meditating when they met, or whether Sara and John discovered meditation together after they met?

I took up daily meditation a few years after our marriage -- say, 1987 or 1988. (I'd have to go digging through boxes to look up the date.) She took it up after we lost our son, thus in 1990. Both of us had dabbled before then, dating back to our teen years in both cases, but that's when we each began serious work.

BTW, why address me in third person in the latter part of your comment? That seems a little odd.

Interpreting a symbol

Hello dear JMG, and thank you for your good work.

(1) I was wondering if you would have anything interesting to say about the central symbol of the famous Neverending Story book.

It is initially presented as a gold necklace with two serpents, one dark and one light, biting each other's tails, in the shape of an oval. It is called Auryn.

The bearer of this jewel can have any wish granted in the realm of fantasy, and the purpose of this path of (make-believe) wishes is to find one's True Will in the real world. The fantasy creatures will be guided and protected by it, but apparently have no free will of their own.

Near the end of the book, the main character goes inside the Auryn, which is now a large golden cave/hall/dome, where two giant serpents (one white, one black) bite each other's tails, encircling the waters of life.

I understand that the Ouroboros, a single serpent biting its own tail, represents the Astral light. What would change if there are two, one black and one white? What is the connection between this and the two pillars, Joachim and Boaz? Or is it all just random gibberish?

(2) in a related line of thought, what would happen if someone actually decided to follow some random gibberish as a spiritual path? Would it be possible for someone with some innate talent to turn just about anything into a useful path?

Re: Interpreting a symbol

1) The double ouroboros wasn't an invention of Ende. Here's a version from the Aurea Catean Homeri, an important alchemical text:

It's found in alchemical texts back to Hellenistic Greek times, that I know of. It's a symbol of the reconciliation of dualities, closely related to the yin-yang symbol.

2) Half of the pop mysticism of the Sixties can be described that way. It didn't lead anyplace useful.

I saw last week that there is an FHR Temple starting up in Providence. When it comes to temple work, what if some of the members practice the LRP and others the SOP? I remember you saying that practitioners that do one of the rituals should not do the other. What would be the best solution for such a scenario?

There's a difference between individual work and group temple work. Banishing rituals aren't used in opening and closing the group temple, so it doesn't matter at all what rituals the members do in their own personal practice.
