JMG on Podcast UFO

Another podcast, this one on Podcast UFO with its genial host Martin Willis. The subject? My new book The UFO Chronicles, and its thesis that a large part of the UFO phenomenon was manufactured by US Air Force intelligence. It's a lively discussion, not least because Willis disagrees with me but is open-minded enough to hear me out. A good time was had by all -- and no doubt someone in the Pentagon is chuckling; I'll leave it to my readers to decide whether someone on Zeta Reticuli is doing the same thing.

I look forward to listening to this. It's had a lot of views on You Tube already. I had a look at the comments and they are almost all negative about you, you are a 'clown' apparently. You have upset a lot of True Believers lol

most of the comments are "why bring a debunker on?". If you want the truth, wouldn't you want a debunker on?

Too funny. I'm not a debunker -- I agree that people are actually seeing strange things in the sky, and that the government really is engaged in a coverup! I just disagree with the ET-believers about what people are seeing and what the government is covering up.

I bet. The earlier version of the book, The UFO Phenomenon, got saliva-flecked tantrums from the true believers on both sides (for the so-called "skeptics" are by and large as dogmatic about their viewpoint as any believer in extraterrestrials). I expected that, to be frank -- when a debate has become that fossilized into a rigid binary, anyone who introduces a third option is going to get screamed at by both sides.

The commenters didn't even engage with the idea that mystical experiences might be part of the phenomenon. I suppose they are too materialistic to even consider the possibility. Now, what if you had said that you think interstellar travel of the kind they think is responsible is impossible. Imagine the meltdown.

Also, listening to that podcast reminded me of my own UFO encounter with classified aircraft during the late 1990s. It wasn't anything near as sexy as a black wedge. Instead, it looked like a large, boxy Star Trek shuttle craft with stubby wings flying over me at night. Years later, I figured out it was a V-22 Osprey, which was undergoing testing and extensive redesign at the time.

Thank you! I was able to fill in a lot of blanks in the new edition, largely because so much more has been declassified. In the first version I could only guess why the Air Force faked the big 1952 flap; in this edition, based on better information about secret US balloon programs, I was able to offer a specific, detailed hypothesis. Another decade or so and I may be able to go further still.

I’ve noticed you referring to the declassifications from time to time and now you’ve really whetted my appetite! This will be interesting reading. I came to the topic without an iron in the fire so it’s interesting to observe people like your host in this podcast react and squirm with the binaries surrounding the narratives... though I thought he did a pretty good job overall.

It's been fascinating to watch information come out about the U-2, SR-71, and balloon projects. My guess is that the disclosures will keep on coming.

The UFO Phenomenon is one of my favorite books of yours, along with Atlantis. I was hoping the host would have allowed the topics to veer at least a bit into the areas of altered consciousness and the parallels with faery folk, but given his likely biases, that's probably a tall order. Still, a cordial and interesting conversation.

Is it just me, or did the host get really uncomfortable the moment you mentioned the fact that good digital cameras are very common nowadays?

I also had to laugh and shake my head when he said "we" have been making progress recently. :-)

Oh boy! Well you sure mauled their sacred cow judging by the comments! It was telling that you mention no less than half a dozen books on the phenomena that the host of a UFO podcast seemed to be completely unaware of!

I was completely floored by that. When the earlier version of the book came out and I did some interviews on radio, even the true believers knew the books I cited.

This interview jogged my memory about an incident at Gatwick airport over couple of days in December 18.
A drone was seen flying by dozens of credible witnesses but no footage from any cameras! Even though plenty of news media organisations were there within hours, plus many curious people with telephoto lenses also the police and the military with their super duper equipment. Nil, nada, no footage what’s so ever!

I completely agree with your overall analysis on the subject. there is something very interesting happening but I very much doubt it is little green men. It isn't impossible, it just doesn't seem likely. I have been trying to get a copy of your original book but have had no luck - so I am glad to see that it will be back in print.

You talk about how the government use public eye witness accounts to distract and cloud the overall perception of UFO's and I am reminded of the implementation of the Tor internet network.

The Tor network was designed by the US Naval Research Laboratory in order to make tracking their online actions more difficult. The idea is that you use other computers plus multiple layers of encryption to hide the source and destination of internet traffic, the only problem with that is if all the traffic comes out of the same computers and access the same computers on the other end, it quickly becomes apparent that it is a sole player using the network.

Their solution was to make this technology public, let others jump in and browse to their hearts content and even make exit points for others to gain access. It introduced noise to the system so that is became difficult to keep a track of specific users. They could move around easier by using the crowd as cover.

In the same way with UFO's, by flooding the public with an excess of information from all over the place, they can effectively become disguised.
