Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

High Energy

I've made meditation a regular practice for a couple years and have lately had some interesting results. As a bit of background, I learned the microcosmic orbit technique many years ago and ever since I've practiced circulating energy in that way, along with keeping aware of my chakras. Apart from these practices my approach tends more Western than Eastern, using discursive meditation combined with divination and banishing rituals.

Recently I've had a few experiences of entering a high-energy state. When this happens I feel the presence of intense warm energy enveloping me, and within my torso the energy circulates in a microcosmic orbit without my making any effort to produce the effect. My breathing becomes naturally synchronized with the orbit and my chakras feel so distinct that they almost register to me as physical parts of my body. Again, in the high-energy state this awareness of circulation is automatic and doesn't require deliberate focus. While in this state, the effects of meditation and other spiritual practices are greatly boosted, and I generally feel enhanced in every way: stronger, more perceptive and with a clearer mind.

This state is naturally quite enjoyable to be in, and its experiences have also brought me understanding of things that were troubling before. For example, I realized that some of my impulsive overeating habits stemmed from an energetic imbalance and I better understood how to avoid falling into that pattern. When I've achieved the high-energy state it tends to last for the better part of a day at full intensity, and then gradually fades over the following half day or so.

Are you familiar with such states and any sources on how to cultivate and make the best use of this phenomenon? My ability to reach this state is definitely helped by meditation and energetic work but the exact requirements for it have been elusive to me. It occurs now and then as a matter of course in my practices but if I try to find and meet criteria to enter the state it doesn't work. I don't think this is a kundalini rising because it doesn't fulfill the criteria as far as I've read. I don't get a sense that the energy moves up from the base of the spine and I've never felt my health was in any danger from it, quite the opposite. I doubt it's possible to be like this all the time but if it can be done in a regular, predictable way it would be great. Thanks for reading.

Fascinating. I'm familiar with the microcosmic orbit and the other Taoist energy circulation methods but they're not something I've practiced, nor does any of my training address how to work with it. You may need to find someone with a background in Taoist energy work or qigong to find an answer to that.

Hi John,
In a discussion with my partner last evening we talked about amber. Apparently it is supposed to help with baby’s teething. I cert have heard of it, the women here talk about them. But looking trough the Natural magic correspondences I could find nothing that would link “a strong solar”, “Leo corespondent”, “energy amplifier” to babys, or teeth. Going online I found some articles talking about acids in the beads, either for or against the safety. So a question, is there some tradition associated with amber and baby’s, or small children.
Oh, forgive me for editing in a second question; are you ok? A little depressed does not sound acute, but I would still ask about it?

Every herb or stone has two sets of properties. The first set come from its elemental and planetary correspondences. The second is unique to the herb or stone and can't necessarily be related to the elements or the planets. This is a great example. Amber's property of assisting babies while they're teething has no obvious relationship to its solar and fiery qualities -- it's just something additional that amber happens to have.

Mindset for change

Beginning with learning a magical curriculum, what is the best mindset to enter with? Obviously change cannot take place when one is stuck in old patterns and beliefs. Yet the aspirant does not really know the way yet - what they might imagine as the destination is probably different than the actual thing.

What kind of approach or state of mind can an aspirant adopt to make the most out of their magical training?

The best mindset is simply a willingness to trust whatever system you're using -- to study what you're asked to study and practice what you're asked to practice, without trying to tinker with it or tell yourself that you know better than the people who designed it. (In the vast majority of cases, you don't.) Especially if you don't have any previous experience with magic, the nature of the work and the destinations to be reached are as incomprehensible as managing a sailboat would be to someone who'd never encountered wind or open water, so all you can do is keep an open mind and trust the teachings.

Question: what is the best way to tell if you are being influenced by, for lack of a more eloquent term, "negative energies" from others? I know this is large category including everything from nasty thoughts to straight up psychic attacks, curses, etc. I've read Dion Fortune, but wondering if you have a go-to simple technique to discern "what's yours" and what's coming from others. Maybe a psychic-energy-geiger-counter iPhone app. I jest.

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but it's on my mind esp. since I'm currently in the unfortunate position of living with a spouse who is hitting me with a lot of obvious and blatant enmity as we navigate a pretty toxic and possibly ending phase in a long, um,...fiery relationship.

It's very difficult to do this until and unless you put a lot of time into meditation. Most of our thoughts, most of the time, aren't ours anyway -- we pick them up from the ongoing astral chatter that surrounds us. (If you meet someone who thinks most of his or her own thoughts, your first reaction will generally be "What a weirdo!") So before you can figure out what negative mental influences are coming to you, you have to be able to tell the difference between your thoughts and what you pick up from your surroundings more generally -- and that takes work.

For the short term, I hope you practice a regular protective ritual such as the Sphere of Protection, and make use of the other protective methods included in the Magic Monday FAQ. Living with someone who's dumping hatred on you, especially if the hatred is the product of soured love, can be very stressful.

Hi JMG,

I love that meme! As I'm heading into a break from work and studying, I'm prepping for the CGD Druid grade and have a query I hope you can help with. I'm wondering why 6 ounces of each herb is required to construct the Serpent's Egg (one of my Bardic Grade herbs is chamomile, which will be verrry bulky at that weight) and not 2, 3 or 4, say? I'm having trouble picturing the volume of ash that will be produced from the five herbs in total and how big the interior of my "egg" will have to be.

I've also started researching a potential book about the esoteric side of food (discussed here on MM a month or so back) and spent an entertaining few hours falling down an archive.org rabbit hole of "Books of secrets" and how Paracelsus changed the Middle Ages diet. Do you think it's worth pitching the idea/a detailed outline first (I reckon Aeon would be a great fit) to gauge interest or to knuckle down and start compiling it?

1) The goal is to make sure that no matter what happens in the process, you end up with enough raw material. You can use quite a bit less if you're careful and nothing goes wrong. Remember, though, that the herbs will compact quite a bit when calcined!

2) Write it first. If you don't have a past track record as a published author, publishers will want to be sure that you can actually finish a manuscript before giving you a contract.

Love this week's meme. After years and years of emotional healing, occultism, and grueling inner and outer battles, the 'others' are indeed evaporating. I've dealt with enough shame and fear to 'come out' publicly as myself and start developing options to make an independent living that will remain viable (at worst) through the descent. It's risky, but so's every move at this point. I know it is right for me, though. I've relied heavily on your publications and online advice throughout. Please accept my gratitude.

Can the sphare of protection make me seem nicer?

I had an interesting experience yesterday. I did the sphere of protection ritual as I do each morning.

It might be relevant that I am in the process of adding the GSF initiate additions. That morning I did the earth affirmations for the first time. During the day, people smiled at me more and seemed a lot more receptive to my blessings. At the bus, someone sat next to me, and immediately said, "you seem like a nice person" and we started making small talk (rare on public transport where I live).

I think this may have something to do with the sphere of protection. Perhaps the air part took a few days to kick in? I had a pretty airy day that day.

I am curious if you ever experience or hear about this effect of the sphere of protection?

Yes, any ritual that cleanses your aura will do that. The flipside is that it will also tend to make you repel creeps -- people with really grubby auras will find your presence uncomfortable.

Meditation, energy centers, complexes

I hope your depression passes!

1. What actually happens when your mind drifts off into distraction in occult terms? This is prompted by W.E. Butler’s ‘shoelace exercise’ from How To Read The Aura, where he suggests paying attention to mundane tasks like tying your shoelaces rather than getting distracted by some other thoughts. For example, rather than paying attention to washing the dishes, my thoughts drift off ‘somewhere’. I'm interested in the mechanics of what causes this shift from conscious awareness into the active-seeming but awake-but-not-awake thought-impulses. Is this the will unconsciously choosing to fall into the ruts of certain streams of thought?

2. I was also re-reading parts of your book on the Five Rites, and I’m curious if there are effects of having emotional complexes (unconscious core beliefs) on the energy centers of the body? For example, how does having an emotional complex affect a person if they are working towards awakening various energy centers through the Five Rites or similar techniques? Is this relationship part of the mechanics behind what triggers karmic culmination?

3. Related to RTOL: I was able to buy a used McSpadden mountain dulcimer at a great price. For tuning to the modes on one, you’ve got the degrees listed for each mode, i.e. 1-5-2 or 1-5-8 for the Lydian mode. For the sphere of Love, for example, I would tune the dulcimer to F first by tuning the base string to F, then the 2nd string to C, and the 3rd two-strings to G (2nd degree of Lydian mode), is that right?

1) Your thinking mind is part of your astral body and naturally tends to turn its attention to the astral plane, which is among other things the plane of chattering thoughts. Turning your attention to the material plane takes effort, and is good for developing a strong and focused will.

2) That's a fascinating suggestion -- yes, it would make sense that beginning to activate one's energy centers would stir up emotional complexes, and that that might be behind karmic culmination. Hmm! I haven't seen that issue discussed in Western esoteric writings, but it's certainly worth considering.

1. For some time now, I have been practicing the LBRP (Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram) and the Middle Pillar. Lyam Christopher, on his YouTube channel, states that this ritual increases negativity in one’s life. However, through other videos on his channel and other written sources, I have learned that despite an increase in life dramas, we can observe them impartially and eventually reconcile with our trauma and fears. Now, if the effect of this ritual is indeed to amplify negativity and confront trauma, and since I suffer from rumination—where even the simplest events upset me—how can I determine whether the ritual is actually working or not?
2. I suffer from severe anxiety. Although I took medication for it for a while, it did not make much of a difference. Do you have any recommendations for this?

1) I've heard people say that about the LBRP but my own experience is exactly the opposite. I find that doing any sort of daily banishing ritual removes negativity from my life. I'm not sure what their issue is. As for how you can tell whether the ritual is working, you can't -- not until you've developed your powers of subtle awareness to a much greater extent. Daily practice will bring that about, but in the meantime, you just have to trust the process.

2) Since I'm not a physician or a psychiatrist, Federal law makes it illegal for me to diagnose, treat, or prescribe for any medical condition. People do jail time for that -- the medical industry is very jealous of its monopoly.

Hello, JMG and commentariat

1. Last week I told about your appearance in a scrying I had. I felt a bit dissatisfied after that, as it seems as though there really wasn't a question being posed there. Being a coder, the question, I came up with, sounds a bit technical, but anyways. Initiates obviously know about the Fellowship, but do you know about the initiates? Meaning, when I went through the preparation and initiation, do you have a registry of sorts, which notified about new energy coming in ? Or is it more of a vibes thing?

2. Also on a related note. I see you log the IP addresses, so you can see where I am from. It sometimes troubles me, if me being in this tough situation (war and all), puts a strain on the Fellowship. As I do feel lot's of clarity, calm and confidence, which does seem a bit odd, compared to the doom, despair or delusions around me. I feel extremely grateful for the energies and knowledge I receive. So I was curious (worried) if it burdens the Fellowship. Or is it a debt thing, which, when being in a more stable situation, I could repay with some workings.

1) Well, since I'm autistic, I probably miss the notifications! A little less jocularly, it's the egregor of the Fellowship that takes care of such things. If I find out about them, it's probably in sleep.

2) Not at all. As long as you're doing the practices, you're helping to charge the Fellowship's egregor, and benefit from it in return. If you weren't doing the work you wouldn't get the feelings of clarity, calm, and confidence.

It's purely symbolic. The solar and telluric currents get their names from the direction in which humans perceive them -- the solar current descends from above, the telluric current rises from below -- and so the moon was the logical symbol for the midpoint between sun and earth. No, there's no connection to the moon in the sky.

"I see opportunities to make money"

Last week someone asked about a ritual that would allow one to see opportunities to make money. I decided to give it a go and purchased the oils and green candle, a candle of Venus no less. The candle is a Venus Vigil Light, front label emphasizes love and romance and the candle is dressed with oil, herbs, and roots "alleged to attune to the vibrations of the planet Venus".

My question is would this candle be suitable to use for the opportunities to make money ritual / request?

Usually, I'd think the answer is yes but part of the ritual is placing drops of Crown of Success and Magnet oil in the candle. There may be too much already added to the candle so may be better to find a plane green candle and save the Venus one for another time.

Nah, you need a plain green candle. The dressed candle is set up for love spells, and trying to make one spell do two things will usually guarantee failure.

Good morning!

A question about the SOP. What are your thoughts on invoking more than one (compatible) deity in each section of the SOP? Specifically, I have been invoking both archangels and the names of Jesus in the directions, so for example, in the East, I say, “…by the power of Archangel Raphael, and in the name of Jesus the Word…”

It feels right to me when I do it, because I’m a Christian and I always want to keep Christ in focus and present, but I also wish to call on the specific archangelic powers. When I do this, the Archangels feel vividly present but Christ less so.

Is this way of doing the SOP something you have encountered? Any pitfalls to be aware of?

The Abrahamic religions say there is only one God. If we use divine names of God when practicing SoP, don't we need to change the example prayer you gave? What I mean is, we are using the divine name of God, but at the same time we are invoking “gods.” Does this create a problem? Or is it sufficient to just change the names in the example prayer you gave?

You should read any book by Michael Heiser, but especially The Unseen Realm, and read Psalm 82. The Biblical picture is more complex, and “gods” do make an appearance.

Physical Culture and Magic

I have lately been very interested in the intersection of magic, spirituality, and what for lack of a better term I will call physical culture (defined as broadly as possible, including but not limited to strength training, martial arts, yoga, gymnastics, dance, and all movement practices). I've ben considering starting a Dreamwidth group to discuss the topic, but would first like to gauge the interest.

Does anyone have a physical practice that they feel complements their magical or spiritual practice well? Or would you like to figure out how to make the two work together?

I have many thoughts on how the physical side is not just a distraction, or even a balancing mechanism separate from the non-physical work. But for starters, I have long been into strength training and martial arts, without giving much attention to how they help in the development of the other stuff until recently. One historic example of someone who made the two work for him was Cabalist and strongman Joseph Greenstein, the Mighty Atom.

Currently I have a broad movement practice that includes a lot of different elements, and my martial art is Muay Thai. These don't interfere with my other practices at all, but beyond mere compatibility, I am looking for ways for each to inform the other and I think it's going quite well to begin with, though I have a lot left to explore. Please chime in if you have a practice or an interest in the matter.

I don't know how much of a contribution I'll have time to make, but this is a project well worth pursuing and I'll want to keep track of it. My main movement practice these days is an odd little offshoot of taijiquan called Tai Chi Chih -- it was invented by an American tai chi teacher named Justin Stone, and makes a good gentle exercise and qigong set -- but I've done a number of other practices over the years and I consider movement practices to be a valuable part of esoteric training.

JMG, you wrote some time ago, that you purchased an orgon blanket. How about your experiences? After your post I scrolled trough the internet and found a description how to build one yourself. So I stitched together two layers of steelwool between layers of melton and put the whole thing in a pillow case. I use it in bed and feel sometimes an ever so sligthly tingle but no other effects.
Related - after your essays concerning radionics I built a cosmic tower according to Hugh Lovel with two circuits. This year I loaded the wells with biodynamic preperations (in spring). The weeks went by and my garden kept on trending downwards. Thousends of blossoms on the fruit trees but only an handfull of ripe and edible fruits. Quite a disappointment.
I asked my clairvoyant sister concerning nature spirits and she said, that my garden is teeming (an isle in the city). Should they not naturally support my garden work?

1) Have you tried wrapping it around an injured or ill body part? That's what I do with mine.

2) I haven't worked with Lovel's specific design so don't know how well it works. I know my single-circuit system in Maryland worked very well.

3) Not necessarily. Have you done anything to ask for their help?
