Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. Concerning Transits

With considerable labor I’ve created by hand a chart of my transits. It takes the form of a circular horoscope based on my own, with the transits represented as rays or spokes radiating from a zodiacal hub. Each transit is carefully located by zodiacal position and labeled as to the natal planet or other celestial feature that it aspects, and what that aspect is.

I’m using nine planets (all but Pluto), Midheaven, the Ascendant and the Head of the Dragon. For each of these celestial features I have located the conjunction, two sextiles and two trines, making sixty potential transits in all. I have also located the Houses, not to perfection but within a fraction of a degree (I’m using Astrodienst as my source, and they don’t give exact locations of the House cusps). If it seems useful, I will probably also add a drawing of the aspects between my natal planets, both favorable and afflicted.

My plan is to use the Rosicrucian Ephemeris that I purchased a few months ago to select the best times to launch communications and projects relating to my artistic career, and for other purposes that are important to me. If I can’t locate my Ephemeris (momentarily misplaced), I’ll use Astrodienst to obtain current planetary movements.

Here follows my question. I’m familiar with the astrological basics; I know which planets are benefic, which malefic, and which ones change according to the company they keep or the situation that they’re in. I’ve also been reminded that with transits an applying planet’s orb is only one degree or in some cases, such as that of the Sun, two degrees. I am aware that a planet should be applying to conjoin, not saying goodbye to the natal planet. I gather that a benefic planet (present day) favorably aspecting a natal benefic is bound to be favorable; and indeed if both are benefic, a conjunction is probably good too.

But beyond these basics my knowledge fails. What about malefics? Does a benefic applying to conjoin a (natal) malefic benefit or hurt me? What about the other way about? What about sextiles and trines between these bodies? Does the principle of combustion apply between a transiting planet and the Sun? Does it apply the other way about? What role if any do the Houses play? Is there some interplay between transits and the aspects that relate my natal planets to one another? And so on.

So it appears I need a source for the rules that govern transits and how to use them. Do you know of one that can readily be found online? If not, is there a printed text I should be seeking?

I don't happen to know what's available online, as I'm old-fashioned and prefer print books. There are dozens of books on transits that will give you the guidance you're looking for -- Robert Hand's Planets in Transit is a good thorough guide. You might also consider Vivian Robson's book Electional Astrology, which will help you figure out what placements and aspects are best suited to any given project.

Hi there John Michael Greer. When it comes to the 4 elemental training, which books of yours do you recommend in order?

Can you tell why someone would have very negative unceasing reactions to being told to start the path with the earth element? Isn't this the element of good luck, good fortune, rewards, dispensing of wealth and wisdom, the wisdom of Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo? Why would someone react negatively to that? Unless they believe the element to be what it is not such as greed, pain, hardships, turmoil and failures.

I was told by one Thelemite that perhaps the Order started the student with the elements first so they can take care of their material needs - which they would most definitely do - before they're ready for more intense lodge work that requires constant dedication, discipline and commitment and this sounds reasonable to me. Elementals are easy to petition, are expected to and as you often say, are not affected by planetary astrology.

When it comes to "the 4 elemental training," my books won't help you, because I don't use that way of structuring training. I don't find it helpful to have students fixate on one element at a time, or on the elemental level as a whole.

Hi all,

I have a strange report to make. Yesterday was an irregular day for me and I had to hop around a bit with my daily program. As a result when I was preparing to go to bed in the evening my regular SoP was still pending, in the morning I replaced it with the MOE variety. My subconscious warned me, that there was something wrong, and that I needed it to stay in touch with the Divine and ward of an assault. So I went outside, in the middle of a rainy night and did my SoP. I inquired about the assault, and it is to be a general/pervasive kind. OK, strange. And It was directed at me not the other members of the household.
To add; last week we talked about the bird behavior patterns and my region sees a lively population of herons, sparrows, crows and hawks. Plus a wonderful variety of playful butterflies. So everything seems healthy...

1) What gives? Has anyone noticed something like off or... ?

Can anyone recommend any books, courses or trainings on healing? Also on learning to see or otherwise sense/read disease/illness in the subtle bodies?

Also, is the order of essenes work compatible with golden dawn work?

Also, what is it like to achieve the knowledge and conversation with the HGA?

1) There are quite literally tens of thousands of such books, courses, and trainings. What kind of healing work are you interested in doing?

2) Yes, I know Golden Dawnies who practice it.

3) Zen masters have the only really good answer to this kind of question. They look at you in that inimitable Zen master-ish way that tells you that you don't have a clue but they're too polite to say so, and then they say something like "Five pounds of flax" or "If you have a staff, I will give it to you; if you do not have one, I will take it away." Either that, or they'll whack you over the head with a stick.

The reason they do that is that experiences of the kind you're asking about are quite literally indescribable in any human language. The words simply don't exist. Imagine for a moment that you were one of a community of blind people, speaking a language that had no words for "light" or "color" or any other aspect of visual experience. Then all at once somebody healed your eyes and you could see. How would you explain to anyone else in your community what you'd experienced?

There's a semi famous occultist on YouTube who claims to have climbed the entire tree of life, right to Malkuth. Apparently, upon reaching malkuth he looked upon God and realised it was the 2 faced demiurge of gnosticism (both God and the devil), before he was 'spat back down into malkuth' (serpent biting its own tail metaphor). He claims to have been 'born again' and now proclaims that his spiritual path is to 'sink as far down into malkuth' as possible by become as 'grounded in the now' as possible so that he can be 'spat up into malkuth'.

I was wondering your thoughts on this?

Okay, first of all, I assume you mean "climbed the entire Tree of Life, right to Kether." Malkuth's the lowest sphere, the one we all inhabit anyway; Kether's the highest sphere. Second, no created being can reach, or perceive, or have anything to do with Kether, or either of the other two spheres of the primal triad -- though people can certainly fool themselves into thinking that they've done so. Third, nobody can actually look on the Divine; "thou canst not see God and live." So there's some degree of illusion in all this.

Since all I have to go on is your account of his experience, I'm not going to speculate further about what he actually experienced. I hope his new path brings him success, but, er, I'm not sure I'd count on it.

Hi JMG,

You frequently recommend the Science of Breath by "Yogi Ramacharaka" when commenters ask for advice on strengthening the etheric body. Often enough in fact that I decided to purchase a hard copy for myself (I dislike reading off a screen). I haven't quite finished reading the book yet, but...

1) if the system of breath work laid out by Atkinson is something I decide to pursue is it compatible with the GSF and 5 Rites?

I'm inclined to think it is since a. you recommend it so often, and b. the writing so far reminds me a great deal of the 5 rites, but I don't want to assume.

Yes, Atkinson is quite compatible with the Five Rites. If I'm right, in fact, certain exercises in his book on "Hatha Yoga" (the quotes are because it's not actually about hatha yoga at all -- it teaches exercises from the Western magical tradition) are directly ancestral to the Five Rites.

Red Bag amulet

A while back I asked a question about why, after months of going through a divorce, the salt and nail in my red bag amulet were still nearly pristine. You suggested it meant that we weren't directing negative energy at each other. I just received another round of filings from the court and I now strongly suspect that isn't the case from my soon to be ex. The amulet is still looking great.

I have been doing the Judson Exercise with the the prayers: "Terra, please support, ground, and nurture me." While visualizing standing in a field of waist high grass spaning out to the horizon. "Sol, please illuminate, purify, and energize me." While visualizing golden light and motes decending from the sky. The sphere formed from mixing the energy is either gold, gold-green, or spring green depending on the state of the field and brightness of the light.

My question is open to all. Has anyone noticed a similar interplay between the red bag amulet and the Judson Exercise? At this point it seems like it must be counteracting the effects of humidity and corrosion; it's going on eight months.

Groves and trees

Hello! I recently came into posession of several cherry trees, both saplings and cuttings. I want to plant the lot of them all over my yard. As a druid, how would you recommend I go about welcoming the spirits of the trees into my home, or promoting healing and growth? I would love for every cutting to propagate, and while I won't neglect their physical meeds, I would love to encourage their growth by meeting their spiritual needs as well.

Talk to them and then listen attentively for the answers -- those will come in the form of feelings and intuitions, rather than words. Talk also to the spirit of the yard in the same way, and ask its advice. This kind of conversation is far more important, and also far more Druidical, than any fixed formula.

Protecting trees from vagabonds

Hi JMG,

I remembered the question I was going to ask this week. Quite near me is a beautiful common with many trees, which is also a popular pitching spot for caravan-dwelling vagrants. Unfortunately, many of these vagabonds have no respect for the area, and leave disgusting filth around some of the beautiful trees - I have found soiled toilet paper next to yew trees, for example, or trash bags hiked up into thick, brambly hedges, where nobody can reach them. Blegh. I have taken to bringing a bag to help dispose of this filth, but I was wondering if there were any natural magic protocols that could help dissuade such revolting behaviour, and encourage respect for the trees and the area.

I can think of two options. The classic Old World natural magic approach is to scatter mugwort leaves around the area, as this repels unwanted visitors. Then there's the classic New World natural magic approach, which is to do a hotfoot spell. You'll need dirt from footprints left behind by the vagrants -- preferably prints from several different feet. Mix the dirt with asafoetida, salt, and the hottest pepper you can find. (Chinese white pepper is very good for this; you can also throw in a little dry powdered horseradish and some dry mustard.) On the day and hour of Saturn, scatter the resulting powder around the area -- disposable gloves are good so the mixture doesn't get on your hands! -- concentrating on the intention that those who disrespect the common and the trees are not welcome there.

Opinion on Geomancy Reading

Hi, JMG. Thanks, as always, for running these MMs.

I could definitely use your help as a sounding board for a geomancy reading on a personal matter. I asked the question whether I can earn more than a nominal income from writing fiction.

The four mothers that I received are (in order): Fortuna Major, Laetitia, Carcer, Populus.

The court generated is: Albus (right witness), Rubeus (left witness), Conjunctio (judge). The reconciler is Acquisitio. So, we have a neutral judge produced by a good but weak witness (Albus) and a dangerously passionate witness (Rubeus). On the surface, not so great. But within the context of the question, I can see ‘good’ in all three figures of the court. Still, Conjunctio is not my favourite figure for this question as it is mobile and is considered by Cattan to be mostly a ‘mean’ figure in this combo. And for creative writing, Rubeus is a bit of a ‘wild stallion’.

For the house chart, I have chosen the 2nd house to be the main quesited as my question is focused on earnings as the ‘end’ (though I also have my eye open to the 3rd house [writing], 5th house [creativity] and 9th house [arts]). At first glance, it looks good: Fortuna Major for the querent and Laetitia for the quesited: hard work rewarded and increase in income. Both very favourable figures. Perfection, however, is not great: F. Major does not pass elsewhere in the chart; and Laetitia forms opposition to the querent by passing to the 7th house and no other house (though it can also mean that it brings joy to my spouse). The ‘secondary quesited’ figures tell a mixed story: Carcer in the 3rd house indicates obstacles and passes to the 10th house, which is square the querent (but trine the primary quesited); Conjunctio in the 5th house seems favourable to me and passes to the 11th house of achieving one’s dreams and is sextile to the querent; and Puella in the 9th house is a favourable figure for artistic expression but does not pass elsewhere in the chart (though it is conjunct Carcer in the 10th house). The cardines are also mixed (1H F. Major -> 10H Carcer -> 7H Laetitia -> 4H Populus) with a neutral ending.

As I've noted before, the easiest way to fail at geomancy is to overthink the reading. You asked a straightforward yes or no question and cast a house chart. In a house chart, if there's a mode of perfection connecting the figures of the querent and the quesited, that's a yes, and if not, that's a no. Your answer is "no, you cannot earn a substantial income from your writing." None of the houses you've listed perfect with the querent; sorry.

The reason in this case is not hard to read from the witnesses and judge. Albus is a mild and rather passive figure; Rubeus represents deception, delusion, and hidden trouble. You have an unrealistically rosy idea of what writing for a living is like, and you probably lack the passion and self-discipline needed for the decade or two of hard work with very little reward that every new writer can expect.

It's probably worth saying a little about that latter, because I know a lot of people have no clue what they're facing in the writing business. The median income for a full-time professional freelance author in the US today is a little over $22,000 a year. Yes, that means half of them make less than that; it also means that most writers are quietly being supported by their spouses. (I was, for quite a few years, before I beat the odds and broke into the upper sigmas of income distribution.) If you start writing full time now, barring genius or sheer dumb luck, you can count on ten to twenty years of hard work and low income before you get enough of a backlist that your royalties amount to something and you also have a presence in the market. That didn't use to be the case, and I wish it wasn't the case, but it's been the reality of professional writing for my whole adult life, and it's probably wise for prospective authors to have that in mind.

1) I have no idea. I don't usually hang out in such exalted company!

2) All the work of the GSF is focused on steps considerably lower than that of arhat, since -- at least in the Buddhist schools known to me -- an arhat is already fully enlightened, and that state of enlightenment is the third and highest goal the GSF discusses (after wisdom and revelation). The GSF, rather, is intended for sravakas -- those who are ready to begin the path but haven't yet walked it to its end.

Occult dimensions of pain

Since I've had a flareup of joint pain for about the last month, possibly as an effect of long COVID, I thought I'd ask about the occult dimensions of pain; are there any? If I stand in one place for 10 or 15 minutes to do SOP, that's enough to make my hip and knee joints stiff. Ugh! Putting on my socks is now a painful chore. I'm not asking for medical advice here; just about the occult dimensions.

Pain is the standard instrument for working out karma. Accept it, recognize that it's doubtless the working out of causes set in motion in the past, deal with it as far as possible without resentment, and go on with life as best you can, and it becomes a tool you can use to clear away past burdens and make a better future.

In the theme of this Monday's meme and the theme of the memory from one of the podcasts. One of things that people fear is forgetting and losing what we think we have.

What can occult and magic teach about Anamnesis? In the sense of remembering previous existences not in detail but at least the lessons I've seen there's some of anamnesis for talents, you've mentioned it here that talents are preserved and that sometimes bad karma clouds it from manifesting in the current life. Same with spiritual talents. It is pretty much in many traditions even Bhagavad Gita says they are preserved from existence to existence.

Is there any good book on this. What is your take on this, I am thinking more like milking a bit those talents that are obscured by the bad karma, to remove the bad karma. Also if you have other bits of advice and occult lore about this Anamnesis thing?

Occult teachings generally don't recommend trying to force the anamnesis of previous lives. On the one hand, this tends to involve a lot of confabulation, i.e., your subconscious making things up; on the other, it can be destabilizing to your present personality, partly by bringing up unresolved conflicts from former personalities, and partly because you may get past traumas in too much gory detail. Instead, simply focus on identifying and developing your talents, and take up a daily meditation practice -- that latter's the best way to ripen your mind so that it can be ready for anamnesis.

May Liz and her baby be blessed and healthy during pregnancy, and may her husband Jay (sdi) have the grace and good humor to support his family even through times of stress and ill health.

May Debra Roberts, who has just been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, be blessed and healed to the extent that providence allows. Healing work is also welcome.

Good Morning JMG,

I'd like to thank you for reorienting me on Rhea and Prometheus archetypes, and to several other readers who PM'd me with fictional characters that they thought fit the themes well.
Since I'm an image person, I'd like to present two characters that might fit that archetype as well:



The characters shown are Moll from Wolfwalkers (2020) and Bronach from Song of the Sea (2014), both of which are family films that most ecosophians would probably enjoy. Both women spent most of their respective films near death and hidden away, and are inherently magical and motherly.
What do you (or the commentariat) think - do these have a Rhea-type energy to anyone else?

Curiosity on future work

The question i have this week is somewhat of a preparatory question for future work several years from now just in case I do not get the chance to ask then. I am presently working through the fourth grade of the dolmen arch and am excited to eventually begin healing in future grades. Recently I downloaded the fellowship of the hermetic rose lessons to print so I have them to study when ready, likely several years from now. My question comes from having read the contents of each lesson as I downloaded them so forgive me if it is off base or unnecessary, but if we are still practicing druid healing and get to studying essene healing later in the FHR do we stop the one to use the other or just continue with the energy healing we currently practice? Sorry for being long winded and potentially asking what may be an unnecessary question. Thank you for hosting this space!

If you want to learn the FHR material later on, after you've done the Dolmen Arch, set aside what you know already and do the Essene healing exactly as taught. Later on you can decide which you want to do, or work out ways to combine them -- not hard, since they're quite similar!

Dear JMG, grateful for your advice.
Largely by coincidence, a number of people in my family are facing decisions about whether to move house, move areas of the country etc. for age-related reasons among others. The decisions will have an indirect impact on each other. I am also thinking of moving as well, although for unrelated reasons.
I'd like to ensure as far as possible that people make good decisions for them and for others, (there have been conversations about this) and that what results is to everyone's benefit. So it's more than just a "what can I do to find a nice house," question. Would there be any point in doing planetary charity, and if so what would you suggest? Should it be combined with prayers of some sort?

You can certainly do planetary charity and prayer on your own behalf; Saturn is the planet that rules real estate and the place you live. Before you do either one for anyone else, though, you need to ask their permission. If you don't have their consent, you have no right to interfere!
