Magic Monday

It's just a few minutes to midnight, so we can launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.1 of The Magic Monday FAQ here. Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  if you ask a question about some occult topic and I tell you it's not something I can or will help you with, and you keep on asking more and more questions about that same topic, don't be surprised if your questions just get deleted. 'Nuf said.

The image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book above on the left was my twenty-fifth published book. During my time as head of the Ancient Order of Druids in America, it became clear that we needed a few books for members with rituals and the like. This was the first of them, a guide to the ritual work of a grove (that's what you call a group of Druids) in AODA. It was a pleasant, simple, straightforward job, and I didn't (and don't) make a cent from it -- all proceeds go to AODA. It seemed to me that this was appropriate for what was, after all, a labor of love.

Not the OP. That's very interesting, thank you, I hadn't thought of it that way. I recall that the astral, for example, is often perceived as being less dense the higher up you go, which I think I've experienced. Maybe that's partly where the misconception comes from? Or maybe the density is a result of the material-like lack of definition because the lower astral is closer to the material?

The upper astral is less dense but more complex. That can be challenging for human beings to imagine, since we think of density and complexity as related. Imagine, though, a pattern of magnetic fields or electrical charges -- not dense at all, in material terms, but it can be very complex!

That is very interesting, and your answer sparked a related question!

Normally my experience of images in the astral is vague and indistinct, there is an actual image but at the same time an idea of what the image needs to be like, if that makes sense. Rarely, I get much sharper, more electrically bright and colorful images that appear somehow and inexplicably geometrical in nature. The experience of both types of images are different; I can't bring up images of the second type at will, for example, and there is no accompanying idea of what these images actually are.

What do you think is happening there? Because these images feel more realistic in terms of the sharpness, are these denser and therefore lower in the astral? I'm probably reading into it too much and thinking these are perceptions of the complexity of the less material planes, but if so, is there something to pay more attention to whenever they do occur?

That could mean any number of things. Just keep on with your practices and let your perceptions ripen with time.

Somehow, I have an easy time imagining a plane that is both complex and spaced-out, perhaps that's a positive sign for my higher development. I've seen some sources compare the lower astral to Hell, the middle astral to Limbo, and the upper astral to Heaven, I wonder if that's accurate? From the glimpses I've gotten, the lower astral is a seriously weird place.

btw, this asset from a childhood favorite, Unlimited Adventures (FRUA), is a great depiction of the astral imo, it always kinda stuck with me (in-game, it's intended to be Limbo):

That's more or less approximately right, in terms of what it's like when you end up there after death. The higher the subplane or region of the astral you reach, the more pleasant your time between lives will be.
