Magic Monday

It's just a few minutes to midnight, so we can launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.1 of The Magic Monday FAQ here. Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  if you ask a question about some occult topic and I tell you it's not something I can or will help you with, and you keep on asking more and more questions about that same topic, don't be surprised if your questions just get deleted. 'Nuf said.

The image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week. The book above on the left was my twenty-fifth published book. During my time as head of the Ancient Order of Druids in America, it became clear that we needed a few books for members with rituals and the like. This was the first of them, a guide to the ritual work of a grove (that's what you call a group of Druids) in AODA. It was a pleasant, simple, straightforward job, and I didn't (and don't) make a cent from it -- all proceeds go to AODA. It seemed to me that this was appropriate for what was, after all, a labor of love.

Dear Mr Greer

There is this thing in some current new new age/alternative circles called “reality shifting”. The one thing I’ve noticed is that they’re not very good at describing exactly what they mean by this and often talk about moving to a different time line.. Sometimes it sounds perfectly sensible. You can cary out various techniques to change your attitude and the way you think and for example go down a different career path. If you do this you are in a sense going down a different time line from the one you you were on and can can make some changes in the universe.

However, in other cases they seem to claim that you can literally change the reality that you are living in and make it sound as if you can end up in a different universe and you can have whatever you want. If this was true then then I would be living in a 1930’s style Green Utopia where everyone travelled round on steam trains and had perfect 1930’s manners and clothes and lived in perfect 1930’s English villages and the only crimes would be committed by members of the upper or middle classes and would-be solved by the likes of Hercule Poirot or Lord Peter Wimsey. Unfortunately this has never happened, which is why I am still ablate use the internet to communicate with you. I suppose this is what happens when you confuse reality with metaphor.

That's correct. You can certainly change what I suppose could be called your lifeline, the trajectory you make through the complexities of the world, and some of those shifts can take you into places so different from your current experience that you might as well have entered a different world; most people experience this, for example, when they take up serious magical training. But the rest of the world doesn't necessarily change, and no, you can't always get what you want. (Though if you try sometime, you just might find you get what you need.)
