The image?  That's the twenty-fourth card in The Sacred Geometry Oracle. Card 24, Progression of Roots, when upright tells you that the situation is unfolding into new territory and the old rules don't necessarily apply; when reversed, it amplifies this by warning you that you have no clue what's about to happen. The sun in the upper left corner of the image tells you that this card belongs to the final third of the oracle, which corresponds to Nwyfre, the principle of spirit and meaning.  We've completed our passage through the first two of the basic root functions of sacred geometry -- √3, the principle of the vesica piscis and the equilateral triangle, and √2, the principle of the square and its diagonal -- and now we're working with the √5, the seed from which the Golden Section unfolds and resolves all back into unity.

I've add the classic Golden Dawn LBRP to my routine, and have had the weird sensation of pressure running down the middle of my back when I do the ritual. More precisely, I think I feel the pressure just behind my back, perhaps half an inch off of it. Is this normal, and if it is, what can I do to make things less unpleasant while I do the ritual?

It's normal for people to get odd sensations when they start practicing rituals like this one, though exactly what sensations show up vary from person to person. What's going on is that your energy body is flabby and weak, and it's feeling the burn now that you're starting to exercise it! Treat it the way you'd treat minor discomforts during exercise: ignore it and keep on doing the practice. Fairly quickly it'll fade away.

In my experience, they're gods just like Jupiter, Thor, Baal Hadad, etc. I haven't found them to have a particularly hostile relation to the other gods. Conflicts tend to be among their worshipers and those of other deities, not so much the deities themselves.

Dipping a toe in mundane astrology

What is the significance of the midheaven in mundane astrology? I looked up the grand conjunction and recent Aries Ingress for New Zealand and found that they both had Jupiter Trine the midheaven, with an orb of 8 minutes of arc from the first house and 10 minutes from just over the cusp of the second house respectively.

The angles themselves have no particular role in traditional mundane astrology. The planets ruling the cusps of the angles are highly important, but none of the sources known to me discuss aspects to the midheaven, ascendant, or any other cusp. That doesn't mean they're necessarily unimportant, just that the work hasn't been done yet to work out their importance; you might explore other charts and see if you can find other aspects to the midheaven, and determine what they signified.

What is your opinion about the works of Immanuel Velikovsky? Also, do you feel that the lunar eclipse that happened roughly two weeks ago might have caused a paradigm shift in some people? Roughly around that time, I was doing my usual routine with Cartomancy and I somehow shattered my once-strongly held belief that there is only one God. Instead, I realized that there were many, most of whom are unknown to us, and will probably always be. I found this to be very troubling instead of liberating, and while it is better now, I am still somewhat shaken by it. Part of me wonders why this happened, and another wonders why it took me so long.

1) In my view Velikovsky was interesting but wrong. He proved that it's possible to rewrite mythology in the language of Hollywood disaster epics, but his handful of accurate predictions are massively outweighed by serious mistakes. The thing I'd point out is that there were certainly big disasters in ancient times, but his theory of planets zipping about the solar system like billiard balls simply doesn't work.

2) That can certainly happen. Do you have your natal chart? See if the location of the Moon at the time of eclipse was in aspect to anything in your birth chart; that may tell you whether the eclipse was involved.

In classic astrology both the age of Pisces and the age of Aquarius are ruled by Saturn. Which is why, you asserted, contact with spiritual world is more difficult than it has been.

But in modern astrology Aquarius is ruled by Uranus. So something may change in that regard. Maybe there is hope for a spiritual revival? Or am I getting it wrong?

Nah, in classic astrology Pisces is ruled by Jupiter. It's Aquarius and Capricorn that are ruled by Saturn. As for Uranus, we're still learning about his character, but the thing that's clear about him is that he demands individual independence. If there's a spiritual revival in the age to come it will be a matter of unique individuals pursuing unique paths, rather than the one-true-faith obsession of the Piscean era.

On the lecture about protection from psychic attack by Gilbert it says to add some wordings related to what is being banished and the senses in the SoPP. If doing the LRP, and since the latter doesn't include a section for citing specific things, does it cover that by itself or is that specific protection out of the curriculum by using CGD methods?

That specific protection isn't an option if you're using the LBRP or the Judson exercise. The other methods are useful, however.

Question: What is the break down of the seventh cosmic plane (according to CosDoc) and the subplanes of those seven planes?

If memory serves, you've listed the 7 planes as physical, etheric, astral, mental, spiritual, causal, divine. (or something similar). That is from other traditions?

I ask because I recall you had a breakdown of the subplanes of the subplanes planes and "etheric" was one of the physical subplanes. So I think there are two different things (at least :^)

There are various ways of talking about the planes of being. The Cos.Doc. uses the version from Theosophy, which is in order:

Upper Spiritual
Lower Spiritual
Upper Mental
Lower Mental
Upper Astral
Lower Astral
Physical (including etheric)

I prefer a different taxonomy, which is the one you listed, and was taken (with certain adaptations) from the Rosicrucian tradition. I find it helpful to treat the etheric as a separate plane, and to distinguish the spiritual planes in a little more detail. You can use either system, however, or a different one.

In the Theosophical system, the three lower sub-planes of the physical plane are matter as we know it, solid, liquid, and gaseous, and the four higher sub-planes are the chemical ether, the life ether, the light ether, and the reflecting ether, from the bottom up in both cases.

Whether you agree or not with the causes young men and women have fallen supporting, I hope we can at least respect their courage and willingness to serve.

At any rate, I first have a work to share: The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. A lovely work of prose poetry, it has some very beautiful and moving passages.

As for a question, for JMG and the commentariat: "Do you have any suggestions on works to read about the nature of beauty/aesthetics? It's a bonus if said works make any connection to spiritual matters (which is what I'm interested in exploring), but for such a big topic, I reckon I'll have to read pretty widely."

When separating the coarse from the subtle in plant alchemy, the coarse ends up in the compost bin. Where does the coarse go when doing internal alchemy?

If you're getting rid of the coarse in plant alchemy, according to everything I've learned, you're doing it wrong. The coarse -- meaning here the solid plant matter left behind when the volatile fractions are extracted from it -- is properly calcinated to ash, the ash finely powdered and reduced to its pure mineral salts, and then combined with the subtle fractions in the final magistery. Solve et coagula -- and the final coagula must bring together all the components of the original plant, or it fails.

The same is true with internal alchemy. You separate the subtle from the coarse, not for the purpose of disposing of the coarse, but so that each can be purified and raised in vibration before being brought back together in a new unity.

Divination question; seeing “things” around the house

Thank you very much for this chance to ask questions. :-)

1. To you and everybody else who feels compelled to reply:

In divination, how do you determine the “severity” of a (negative or positive) prediction?

E.g. assuming the Sacred Geometry Oracle shows you a 15. Tetrahedron reversed - Disruption:

“[…] Disruption, confusion and chaos are the likely outcomes. When this card appears reversed, trouble is on its way, […]”

This could mean things of very different “severity”. From a minor inconvenience all the way to “the end of the world as you know it”, the range of “trouble” is very broad. And it would make a wee difference where on that spectrum the outcome will be… ;-)

So what are your strategies to determine the severity/intensity of a positive or negative divination prediction (before it happens, of course)?

2. Since we are living here in this house, I sometimes see “things” (for lack of a better word) moving outside, from the corner of my eye. As if a person would be moving in the garden.

In the beginning, I’ve put this down to moving branches (there’s a lot of nature around), reflections in the windows etc, but after reading here for a while, I’d like to think that this is simply what it seems to be: something (somebody) moving outside.

This usually only happens when I’m inside the house, not when I’m in the garden myself. It feels fine, btw - not malevolent in any way. So what I do now is smile to myself whenever I “see” one of these, and then move on with my life.

I’m not sure if I should leave it at that, or if there is anything I should do? Not sure if it’s even wise to attempt to start relations here?

3. Recently, I’ve started seeing similar “movements” inside the house. But this is different: much smaller (about the size of a large insect up to a mouse), faster movements, and usually on the floor in the room where I am. A bit like a larger insect scuttling around, but it feels different somehow, not like an animal.

The “vibes” are also different from whatever is moving outside. Not malevolent either, but not as, hm, gracious and as friendly/open to contact. (Or maybe this is just me, because my mind still packs whatever this is in the insect-like category??) Not sure how else to phrase this - but at least I can spell this out here without feeling weirder than I am. ;-)

Of course, when I turn towards whatever this is, I can see nothing there.

Any idea what this could be?

And again the question: Is there anything I should or could do? Or is it best to just ignore it for now?

2. Before you settle on an answer for that one, find a list of hypothyroid symptoms and look it over as a precaution. Hallucinating movement (how your brain interprets it depends a lot on your personal history, but typically people report bats, birds, cats...) of dark shapes in your peripheral vision is not one of the more commonly reported ones, but it's definitely on the list. I used to see those (for me it was cats), and it resolved when the thyroid issue did. Used to be all the time. Now... haven't hallucinated a cat in over ten years.

Still have other interesting visual disturbances. Just not that one.

time and again I have wondered, if there may be (or have been) a meaning behind
some odd coincidences about my birthday. My family name is Janus, and was born on January 10th, my father's birthday. Didn't bring me luck though, since I was nearly strangled by my own umbilical cord - or did it ? At least I survived that.

Do you know if there is still an entity around, who has once been worshiped by the ancient Romans under the name of Janus ? Are there still people praying to him and getting responses ?

Strangely I don't feel drawn to ancient roman culture at all - au contraire. But I like the idea of Janus as a guardian of the gateway to the other gods or a maybe kind of messenger. Reminds me a bit of Thoth/Hermes or even Lovecraft's Nyarlathotep ;-).

Roman Polytheist (Cultor Deorum Romanorum) here. Yes, I pray to Janus and give first offerings to Janus before I give prayers and offerings to the Lares and gods I worship. As far as I know, all Cultores today first pray to Janus when praying to Roman gods because that's how it was done according to Ovid's Fasti and Cicero's On Agriculture. I've gotten responses and small changes in consciousness when I start up his invocation and prayers, so he's still out there and responding to prayers. I've also had some very amazing responses from the main Roman god I worship, so clearly Janus has been a good protector and guide. The holy day of his wife Cardea (goddess of hinges, protector of the threshhold) is actually coming up on June 1st really soon.

I agree Janus is very underrated.

Basic astrology question

Greetings JMG,

As a bit of context, the lunar eclipse from two weeks ago gave me the push that I needed in order to try to understand what's actually going in my birth chart (instead of just consuming the advise from the astrologer). I found some placements that helped me identify a potentially problematic situation at work and, hopefully, defuse it before it turned into an actual problem (at least this seems so now). So first I want to thank you for your timely advice.

But that has left me wondering: My natal chart looks ugly. No planets in rulership or exalted positions, and lot's of squares and oppositions. If what I understood from my reading is correct, that would mean my life should be an uphill battle, but it does not feel that way. I consider myself a blessed person, and my life a reasonably happy one. Some of the specifics ring true: by example, my Venus is in detriment and my romantic life produced lots of disapointment and anxiety through my youth; and there's a Mercury-Mars sextile that, in retrospective, has helped me achieve goals and pull myself out of tight spots more than a few times. But ultimately, I've never felt the stars are out to get me.

So, what am I missing?

First, "The stars incline, they do not compel." Second, squares and oppositions don't mean a life of failure and misery, it just means you have to work to achieve what you want. Squares are among other things sources of strength. Third, the stars are never out to get you. They're simply the hand you're dealt at birth. How you play your cards determines the outcome of the game.

1. Your WoH books have got me thinking again that some devotional practice might be good for me. A simple prayer 1x, 2x daily. But when I made the divinations about which god might be suited for me I got back blanks or refusals. Then I divined, if it is somehow appropriate for me right now, that I am left to fend for myself and build myself up on my own strength and got back a very positive Beith. I meditated on the subject and got to the conclusion, that I am not abandoned, but that circumstances have been given to me where I have the opportunity to work in solitude on my selfdevelopment alone. And to build up strength. Does this happen in occult world, that people are kept in solitude? Seems strange to be said that prayer is not for you.

2. I have been devouring your WoH books. And I would like to give them to my partner and god-daughter to read. But I have them in e-book form. Now for my personal use I have a hard drive library and the current copies on kindle. I see no trouble there, BUT how can I give them these books to read without… well making copies that would be considered theft?

1) Yes, the gods do quite often tell you to stand on your own two feet. There's a great scene in a favorite novel of mine: a painting of a prophet staring in awe as a lightning bolt from heaven engraves words on a cliff face. The words are THINK FOR YOURSELF, SCHMUCK!

2) If you owned them in printed form and handed your copies to your partner and goddaughter to read, that wouldn't be a problem; the same rule applies here. Once you own a copy you can lend it.

Cancer Ingress

1. In your latest Cancer Ingress post, you have Mercury sextile both Jupiter and the Moon. The former, as you say, is close at 1° 9', but the latter is not shown on the chart you provide and is quite wide at 4° 36'. Is that a mistake, or since both planets move fast do you think that it still has some influence?

2. The software I use to generate charts doesn’t allow different orbs for each planet, but it seems that yours does, is that right? If so, what is it?

While offering a lesson in Feldenkrais, both the taught and I used the same bathroom - I went in after her and upon gazing into the mirror in the washstand I had the....sensation?...that I was her, as if I was seeing her while seeing me in the mirror, I cannot describe it correctly, it was her/me at the same time with a certain sad feeling. I wonder if she released emotions while standing there and I picked up in it?
I practice the SOP (Dolmen Arch, first two parts) since a few weeks, am doing the OSA. A friend of mine whom I talked this over with wondered if that might be my (a) gift showing up and recommended recording the occurences.
Before practicing the SOP I also gave lessons to her and once while good-bye embracing I felt like a sort of sad/dark deposit of...energy?...near my heart, this ceased after doing SOP daily. Because there is also the Dr. Tavener Story of subletting the mansion I wonder if it is rather the gift or rather something else. She is into buddism and meditation, from what I know from her I'd rather say its not conscious if it is on her part at all. Something like it (the superimposition) happened once again. If it sounds like a gift, is there a name to it and would you happen to know any sources that could help me understand it better?

Hello, Thank you for answering our questions every week.

I hope you can help with this even though I frame and interpret it through conventional psychology at least as much as spirituality.

I have been doing a Classical SOP for three years. During this time, a lot of positive changes have happened in my life including recovery from a long illness.

I once made an attempt to change a deity at one of the points but that did not go well, and I became sure I need to stick with those whom I have invoked in it all along and who helped me improve my life.

A few months ago I became worried about Hephaestus and whether it might be good or bad for me to be invoking a god who has an injury/disability at a time when I need to keep getting better and be more normal. I know the history behind smith gods and lameness, and I am not a metalworker, but that seemed neither here nor there. I didn't really know what to do, and I knew based on the aforementioned experience that I should keep him in the SoP, but I also didn't think it would be good for me to contemplate or pay extra attention to the idea of him.

But now I have been stuck with a leg injury for two months which really should have got better in that time. It is really a minor injury but it doesn't really feel like it to me because it gets in the way of so much in life. It is also unusual because it's clearly other people's fault, rather than happening because I was overdoing it in sports.

In the last couple of weeks I've started to accept I need to use this time to get lots of things done at home, especially activities where I need to sit down, and found that I can be content with that. Before I was totally focused on going out and doing things I couldn't when I was ill (and when I first had the injury, on getting back to that ASAP). It was like a supersized version of how a lot of people have been after the covid lockdowns, and the last thing I wanted was to stay at home, and I had felt like I needed loads of exercise for mood management.

But the injury is still a problem for normal life, for work prospects and I am getting deconditioned again as far as fitness is concerned.

I have been meaning to ask you about this for weeks but this was the first time I have actually got down to typing whilst MM was happening, and I am thinking aloud whilst writing.

I had sometimes contemplated offerings to gods who rule activities I want to be doing: Hermes, Poseidon, but yes, god conflict would not be a good thing for some modern mortal.

So I think I need to do some kind of appeasement and contemplation and offering for Hephaestus.
(I also wanted to start doing planetary charity to Mercury this week anyway and think I need to start something for Hephaestus first.)

But I am also worried, and see this through the lens of things like OCD and psychosomatics and a Catholic upbringing, that part of me may feel I have to keep being injured as some kind of atonement. But that certainly doesn't help with work and energy which are the other things I tend to aassociate with Hephaestus and fire in my SOP. I also don't think I've done anything very much though, just not give him as much attention as most of my other SOP deities outside the ritual.

Whether we are looking at it as a message from a god or as headology (I can't remember if you are a Pratchett reader, but it is a very useful concept) I feel like I need some kind of advice on how or what to do.

I did have a thing last year where I kept buying unsatisfactory Venus statues until I felt I 'heard' that they were not the right ones and to give it a rest. I also did a round of high value planetary charity earlier this year to Venus to make up for that and a couple of other things.

Aphrodite doesn't exactly seem fond of Hephaestus in myth but perhaps it is relevant that it's husband and wife gods I am feeling the need to atone to or appease.

I would welcome your advice or that of other experienced Greco-Roman polytheists. Thank you.

Why, that depends on how much sustained effort you're willing to put into it. In one case I know well -- mine -- it took a geeky, chronically depressed bookworm who was pretty clearly headed for a life of failure and misery, and turned him into a successful writer and occult teacher who's been happily married for 38 years and has fulfilled most of his childhood dreams. Of course your mileage may vary, and that example also involved obsessive commitment to magical practice and study, but that generally helps...

Kung Fu Sparring and Inipi sweat lodges

Daily divinations

I have finished LRM and now I do my (more or less) daily divinations, ritual and meditations.
Ritual and meditations are ok. However I have great difficulty in relating my daily divinations with what actually happenned.

I did tarot cards, geomancy and numerology. And in all 3 methods the readings seemed disconnected to my daily life.
However for geomancy, when I ask specific questions, I get good results, whilst with numerology it gave a fairly good description of my character.
I am hopeless with tarot cards.
My question is that what should I do concerning daily divinations?

You might consider trying some other methods of divination to see if they work better for you. With regard to tarot cards, I've just finished editing a volume of John Gilbert's tarot instruction -- once it's in print, it should be helpful in cases like yours. (He constantly had students who felt hopeless with tarot until they studied with him; many of them went on to become professional tarot diviners.)

Curious feelings

I study LRM. Today was the funeral of an elderly aunt. Whilst going to the funeral by car I told to myself, mmmhhh... I really should slow down at this round about. I have a bad feeling about the place.

Later that day, I learned from other mourners that a few minutes after me there had been a bad accident there, no idea of any casualty though.

Do such impressions happen to occult students at times?

They can happen irregardless of whether or not you do any occult practices. I don't practice anything on a regular basis but have had such feelings (usually of a minor nature) which have turned out to have a real basis. My best guess is it involves a sensitivity to the localized non-physical energies either positive or negative. Occult practices will help you be more aware of how these energies are flowing about and more willing to respond accordingly. You sensed negative energy and slowed down, no doubt sparing yourself a fender-bender. The other driver didn't.

Consider it a helpful fringe benefit of your practices.

hallucinations vs astral?

I happened upon a list of Prozac reduction side effects that included visual and auditory hallucinations. Reminded of my experience of more visual and auditory astral static, I'm wondering how one tells the difference between hallucinations and clairvoyance / clairaudience / whatever it should be called. There isn't a difference. Hallucinations are unintentional glimpses of the astral plane, usually a fairly low sub-plane of the astral.

Hi,

I have finally decided to discard my scientific materialist skin and am now looking to develop my spirituality.

Thus far I have started with Levi's book (Chapter 3 currently) and am working my way through the Sacred Geometry Oracle.

I really feel a need to connect with people in person and I have found a meetup group in my city which professes to busy themselves with spiritual healing and affirmative prayer.

At the moment I don't really care what people believe, as long as I can spend some time with them and I don't have to wear a mask. Yes, I live in a country where that is still a thing, which is why I can't just waltz into any old church and sit with the people there.

My question is, does anyone here know anything about Keith Milton Rhinehart (https://www.keithmiltonrhinehart.com/) and the Aquarian Foundation (https://aquarianfoundation.com/)? The meetup group follows these teachings.

As I said, as long as there's nothing crazy or damaging in there, I don't really care. But I have noticed in some cases people were warned against certain teachers / movements on this forum because they had developed into something self serving or worse.

My sense is that my desperation makes me vulnerable and so I'm hoping that people better versed in these matters can help me to avoid any serious mistakes.

Now there's a blast from the past! Many years ago my wife and I lived not far from Rinehart's original church. His teachings are a New Age offshoot of spiritualism; I haven't heard anything especially positive or negative about them, however.
