I had the pleasure the other day of being on Gary Caton's Hermetic Astrology Podcast, where we spent an hour and a half or so talking astrological shop with a live microphone. As usual, the subjects of discussion veered all over the place, but this time in an astrological direction. Gary's got a solid background in traditional astrology, and so we were able to roll up our sleeves and get into the nitty gritty of eclipse charts, ingresses, planetary conjunctions, and more. That was a very nerdy talk, a lot of technical terms were used making it somewhat opaque to outsiders, but still enjoyable to listen.

That discussion of considering the Aires ingress prior to the great conjunction has been illuminating for a project I’m working on related to the reading of Simon Schama’s Citizens. The March 20, 1782 Aires ingress and the November 5, 1782 GC as casted from Paris tell some very interesting tales and inspire speculation of some possible workings that involve early acess to Uranian data and the English line of Picatrix manuscripts. There is more to unpack, but I’ll wait for MM or the Open Post to present the report of what I’ve found.

Translation of Abu Ma'shar

Before you start on that Abu Ma'shar translation you might want to look up Benjamin Dykes. He's translated a number of Persian works from Latin, but his more recent material is directly translated from period Arabic.

In the Bishr podcast he claimed the original source texts were much more Helenistically influenced then the 12th Century Latin translations suggest.

I'm sure the source text were much more Hellenistic, being closer to that period! I'm still interested in what the medieval Latin translations say, since those were adapted to fit the ancestral forms of European astrology.
