Inquiry into Europes magic community

I am a student of the Dolmen Arch study course and the Druid Magic Handbook. I live in Europe.

This year I am between university studies and am taking the time to pursue personal research and writing in spiritual ecology. I want to know more about how mystery traditions and magical practices have influenced our ecological relationships and land management practices.

This Magic Monday I am asking for your recommendation of serious chat/blogging/study/practice groups in English for Druidism and/or other active Mystery schools. Or just in the Occult in general.

Up until now I have conducted my study and practice largely alone and would welcome the chance to connect to others in the European occult community. However, I am largely unaware of the current occult milieu in Europe or the UK and would value your advice before venturing forth.

I live in the United States, of course, and tend to be fairly solitary, and my contacts with the European occult community have been occasional at best. I was thinking on an elemental correspondence to the five senses and I assigned touch to Earth, smell to Air, taste to Water. Would you assign fire to sight or hearing? However, I guess that can wildly defer by system doesn't it?

Fire traditionally assigns to sight, since sight is mediated by light which is produced by fire. Hearing corresponds to the fifth element of Spirit. As for solstice at Stonehenge -- why, yes, it was!

Hi, JMG- I'm hoping for some advice in getting over a mental block I'm having with divination. As a bit of background: completed the LRM coursework a little more than a year ago now, and have am slowly working my way through PoW/CoP, but I've let my daily tarot readings slide for the last several months, without feeling like I ever achieved much proficiency to speak of with the Tarot. When I was practicing regularly, I was doing the three-card draw outlined in LRM, with the question "what do I most need to understand about the upcoming day", with the first card representing self, the second situation, and the third outcome. I understand, intellectually at least, that the purpose of divination is as a kind of formalized way to let an intuitive sense of a situation speak for itself, without a censoring conscious mind or emotional investment getting in the way, and the idea of practicing daily reads on trivial things to get a certain amount of fluency before using an oracle to guide decisions of import makes a lot of sense to me. Where I found/find myself struggling is that when I read people asking questions about divination on this forum, they're usually framed as implicit "yes/no" questions, with a "positive" reading indicating that a certain action should be undertaken, and a "negative" reading indicating that it should not. I find myself pretty stuck in this as my default frame for divination as a whole, but I consistently run into the same kind of trouble when applying it to a daily reading: since I don't have the option to choose whether or not to live through the day to come, if I get, for example, a negative "outcome" card for the day ahead, I'm not sure what to do with it- as often as not, it might predict a certain kind of negative emotional flavor or generally trivial bad luck, but I have a hard time figuring out what good it does me to know in advance that I might have a comparitively lousy day, and I'm always a bit concerned about self-fulfilling prophecies. All of which decreases my motivation to continue with the practice. I'd imagine this is a fairly common situation, but it's still the one I'm stuck in at the moment- any suggestions as to how to approach this more constructively?

Ah, I see the problem. You're treating the reading as a statement of unchangeable fact rather than a discussion of possibilities and strategies. The next time you cast a three-card reading like that, look at it as advice concerning action rather than as something you just have to endure. If the outcome's an unwelcome card, say, read it as "if I do [card 1] in response to the situation [card 2], I'll get the unwelcome outcome [card 3] -- so I should do something other than [card 1]!" I've found that this is a more productive approach, and it very often allows me to avoid unwelcome outcomes.

A Strange Awakening

It's been a productive week over here, but I am curious at an experience that took place this morning. As I was lying in bed, I perceived something rather strange in my secondary vision. It seemed that a silvery disc was floating above my forehead, and a series of blue circles were rippling out from the disc. Eventually, I sat up, dressed, and ate, but that was distinctively odd.

Also, I am curious if there's a Western equivalent to the Eastern practice of yoga poses, and if the commentariat know, that is also helpful.

1) Interesting. If it happens again, it may mark an early phase in the awakening of one of your subtle body's energy centers.

2) Some Western occult practices have borrowed elements of hatha yoga, or adapted Western postures to yoga-style use. Other than that, not that I know of.

Heading into my second trip ‘round the Wheel of the Year, I hit a snag preparing for Samhuinn.
The instructions in The Druidry Handbook suggest harvest gold, russet, and brown for altar coverings. I bought a package of multicolored bandanas, which included one that can pass for both russet and brown, but harvest gold?
No gots. Should I use orange, yellow, both, or go find something else? My calibrated eyeball says orange.
Might I have the favor of your opinion?

1. I saw a documentary from a news organization infamous for its shock reporting on modern-day witchcraft in a certain Eastern European country. These are folk magic practitioners working in a matriarchal lineage, not the urbanite variety of pseudo-witches. Apparently their services are quite in demand these days and they enjoy a large clientele. One of their top offerings includes hostile magic (cursing, etc.), and they seem quite willing to perform it with the justification that it’s their job to do so. a) Do folk magic practitioners accrue negative karma from hostile magic in the same way as ceremonial magicians? b) I assume that traditional banishing spells such as the LBRP also protect against folk magic?

2. Immediately after I complete a session of magical practice (usually consisting of banishing + invocation), I experience a peculiar kind of headspace. I’m easily startled and sensitive to things in my surroundings, and I look at everything with childlike eyes, as if for the first time. In psychological language, it feels like my mind has been opened up and the grip of the ego has been temporarily loosened. It takes me a good amount of time to go back to being fully normal and grounded, and this effect seems to have increased after a couple of years of practice. The more intense my visualizations and state of trance during practice, the stronger the effect also. Could you comment on this experience? Am I going through something normal?

1a) Yes, very much so. There's a reason why folk magicians who do a lot of cursing and other hateful magic end up despised, shunned, and usually unhealthy.

1b) That's certainly been my experience and that of others.

2) That's a known phenomenon. Try eating more red meat -- that helps ground you in your physical body, which is after all made of meat. Magic should not make you a space cadet...

That said, what would you speculate are the (caco)magical intentions behind this image?

DMH order of exercises

Then the books move into enchantment exercises before moving on to the Grail workings.

I have a memory you suggested this was ok. Or do I have it wrong and need to follow the book as it was written?

Once you have awakened the currents you may certainly move on to the Grail working, and proceed through it step by step. Don't forget about the enchantment exercises, however!

Ogham divination

May I ask a potentially embarrassing question. Since I started doing my DMH practice I have been doing daily divination as I thought it recommended in the book:
First card left(situation)
Second card right (power/future)
Third card center (my rolle/self)
And then I read it from left to right. „The situation is this, you are like this and it will go like this“
In time I have learned to read the second and third cards as assertions, warnings, or possibilities. As appropriate or intuitive.

1. I have seen others here post their readings, where they for instance place the cards in order: immediate, situation, outcome. Can you please give some guidance, or correction, regarding my divining?
2. I would be interested unstudied in studying ogham divination further, are there any books or sources you would recommend?

1) There are quite a few ways of doing a three-card reading and yours is fine.

2) I haven't kept up with recent books on the subject; the little book that comes with Colin and Liz Murray's set of Ogham cards is good if somewhat limited, while the others I've seen are, um, not so good. Does anyone else have suggestions?

Three Letters

Hi JMG!

No question right now, but just wanted to share that two weeks ago, I mentioned Venus had signaled Her willingness to have a relationship and you recommended burning incense and reciting Her Orphic hymn. For the last two Fridays, I’ve done so.

The first time, I read the poem off my phone, burning Frankincense, which is what I happened to have on hand. I felt Her presence, sure, but it occurred to me I’d probably have to have the Hymn by heart if I wanted to make a wholehearted offering.

So, this past Friday I burned some rose incense and recited the Hymn from memory. Around when I got to “Come, Cyprus-born” etc., the entire room I was working in became flooded with brilliant green light. It was, with one possible exception, the most vivid visual result I’ve experienced so far on my path.

Having begun with an LBRP, I thought it best to do a Qabalistic Cross after the hymn & prayer. I found myself bursting into little fits of laughter through the whole thing. Fitting consequence, I suppose, of an encounter with a laughter-loving Queen.

1. I got a little over-confident from how my shield charts have been going and cast a house chart for the first time. I spent a decent amount of time mulling it over, and set the quesited as the 12th house. I ended up with a pretty opaque (at least to me) chart, and realized while I was interpreting it that the question might have been better placed in another house. The protocol is to just stick to reading it as a 12th house question right?

2. I’m coming up on the end of my first year of ‘actual’ magical practice (excluding the truly regrettable amount of time I did in the chaos magic sphere). I’m hoping to get a thumbs up or some feedback for the little curriculum I have set out for this next year so it goes a bit smoother. Let me know if there’s any holes or short-sightedness:

Ritual: Continuing daily Middle Pillars and weekly R+C’s, along with weekly temple workings (basic Opening & Closing from COP for now) with added Hexagrams etc in the future

Divination: Continuing daily tarot (maybe getting into three cards a day in a few months) and monthly forecast spreads. Geomancy here and there for specific questions. Continuing to dabble in starting to read tarot for others.

Meditation: I’ve struggled the most with meditation out of the three main pillars, so I decided i would restart from the ground up and I’m now working through Stage One from Paths of Wisdom. Following the work in there, I’ll be somewhere into Stage Three in a year from now.

Study: Paths will be the main book here, along with Circles. I’m treating it casually for now, but I’ll also be slowly catching up on the monthly Doctrine and Ritual posts too.

1) House charts are a lot more complex. Yes, you should stick with the house you chose, but it's appropriate to look at other houses relevant to the question and see what figures appear in them. Always read the presence or absence of perfection between the house of the querent and that of the quesited you originally chose, however.

2) That sounds to me like a very solid course of practice for now, with plenty of room to add additional workings as you proceed.

1. I understand from perusing this forum's archives sea magic teachings aren't often shared publicly by practitioners. Though I did read with pleasure Dion Fortune's "Sea Priestess" and I am looking forward to starting her book "Moon Magic" soon. Between my natal chart, my life experiences, and the rather strong and growing inner pull of the sea this is an area I want to explore.
Will my working through the Dolmen Arch provide the tools I will need to begin working in the realm of sea magic? If not what system would you recommend after I complete DA?

2. Working with Wirth's tarot has been quite fun! Along side the Levi book club experience I am also developing my interpretations of cards for readings. I must say my understandings are beginning to unfold rather gracefully. Something as simple as devoting a meditation to "Swords" is quite satisfying. In fact, I am getting close to having my own LWB so to speak. With some meanings quite different from the booklet which came with the deck. No real question more a thanks for the help!

3. Last week I asked about feeling a meta-level theme out there as I meditate on themes. Your response:
"2) The meta level is not a theme -- it's what unfolds from the experience of engaging a theme, irrespective of the theme."

Your response got me started exploring this week with shifting into and staying in that meta-state whatever. At least that is what it feels like I am doing. One thing I noticed during one shift was what felt like a pressure forming in my head. Not sure what that is about or if it is even related. While I don't know what to call this flow or state it feels like there is potential to develop something. I want to call it intuition but feel my understanding of the meta-level or ability to grasp it is quite limited at this point. The shift though is getting easier with practice.
Should I be on the look out for mental body tentacles sprouting at some point?

1) The traditions of sea magic are secretive enough that, since that's not something that has ever really appealed to me, I've never seen more than the references in the same books you've read! I'm not sure what to suggest, other than to pursue your magical work and see what leads come to you. If you're meant to do that work, the door will open for you.

3) That's a good sign. Give yourself regular scalp massages, or get someone else to give them to you, if the feeling of pressure becomes uncomfortable. Tentacles -- well, not really, though it may feel that way sometimes. ;-)

Carey's Subtle Body Exercise, Judson Exercise, Cell Salts & Booze, Divination, Keeping Silent

1. In a post on the cell salts a bit back, you mentioned that in addition to experimenting with Carey's cell salt protocol, you were experimenting with certain exercises targeting the subtle body. Any updates on those experiments you're willing to share?

2. Judson Exercise Questions
a. For the Judson exercise, if you incorporate a prayer or invocation for the arms-up single clockwise rotation, would it be better to invoke a solar deity, since that step is about solar energy, a balanced pair since the whole exercise calls in both solar and telluric energies, or is that a matter for experiment and personal beliefs?
b. Do you know if anyone has experimented with the Judson Exercise and Hatha Yoga? I have been using Sun Salutations for a few months now (as described in Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha - thanks commentariat!) primarily for their physical/stretching benefits, but secondarily as a spiritual practice. I revisited your post on The Judson Exercise a few days ago, and decided I'd like to give it a try, but unlike Sun Salutations, doesn't seem to so much help with getting bendier. I've been doing both for a few days now with no ill effects noticed so far, but I always try to avoid being the guinea pig if someone else has already done the honors.

3. I had a question that I realized might be veering too close to medical advice, so I've decided to rephrase it: do you know of any documentation that discusses the interaction (or lack thereof) of alcohol and cell salts, especially those meant to help the liver? When it comes to booze, I know Carey was agin it in general, but those of us not seeking physical immortality knowing how cell salts and alcohol interact could be helpful.

4. A question on interpreting divinations. Often, I get a spread that seems to have a pretty clear message, but then even when looking back, I'm not sure what to apply it to in the past day. For example, Knowledge: Uilleandh, Peace: Muin, Power: Coll seems to pretty clearly say something about insight into something that was hidden or seemed insignificant leading to some kind of change/transformation, but the next day, I look back and don't see anything that seems like an insight into a previous secret/insignificant thing. Any advice on how to handle this kind of thing?

5. Perhaps this is coming as we read through Levi, but other than the strategic element of the fourth magical virtue of not showing your hand so others can't mess with it, why is keeping silent one of the four magical virtues? Or perhaps this is a fine theme for meditation!

2) In both cases, that's a good subject for experimentation.

3) No, not as such. In the old literature Ferrum phos. was recommended for excessive cravings for alcohol and Nat. sulph was recommended to treat the liver. Of course I mention this solely as a matter of historical interest.

I used lockdowns to really dive into occult and religious research, as well as to question many aspects of my liberal worldview, which heretofore had felt like a nonnegotiable precondition for my profession. As a result, I have felt increasingly out of touch with the dominant political egregores specific to my occupation. Somewhat in parallel, I've been slowly dropped by a not insignificant handful of friends and colleagues for exhibiting "wrong think" related to covid, among other cultural issues (they discovered a private social media profile and the flames were fanned by an ex).

This swift exit from my former friend group has been a variously painful, lonely, and confusing period. Do these types of experiences tend to be karmic or is it the inevitable result of developing independent thought and drawing heterodox conclusions in a climate hostile to such endeavors? Besides working on my SOP and using this newfound solitude as an opportunity to jumpstart my spiritual practice, is there anything I can do to handle this adjustment period with relative grace?

This kind of thing happens almost always when you take up systematic spiritual practice, because you become less vulnerable to groupthink and to the collective trance that passes for consciousness in every human society. Manly P. Hall used to refer to the spiritual path as "the Way of the Lonely Ones" for exactly this reason. Yes, it's painful and confusing; yes, putting more time into your spiritual work is a good way to deal with that -- and you may also find, as many others have, that making contact with other people who share your interest in occultism and spiritual practice is a good way to find new friends.

Ascendancies and Culminations

Often one has to launch a project, send a letter, make an important phone call or the like when no good astrological elections are available. Even one’s planetary transits can be moribund for longish stretches when one might wish them to be on hand.

In such cases, is it a meaningful or beneficial practice to time such actions to when the position of a natal benefic is currently ascendant or culminating? Since this happens three times every 24 hours, it seems like a relatively reliable cycle.

If this is a usable practice, are aspects of present planetary positions to the ascendant or Midheaven significant?

It's certainly worth experimentation. The more common approach, though, in Western magic is to use planetary days and hours, which recur regularly every week.

I am working through chapter 4 in Levi's book, and read tonight about christ/antichrist. I'll have to reread it several times, I'm sure, to understand his meaning. But it made me think of your discussion of demons influencing current events, and I wonder if the negativity surfacing at this time in history is coming from more human forces. ( I don't know much about demons to be able to think about that concept.) But it seems like this is a moment where the spring is being pushed very far in one direction, building force to (hopefully soon) spring in the other direction. As the spring is pushed further and further, my observation is that the truth of all of our negative aspects seems to be coming to the surface.

Its difficult for a sensitive person to take it all in, I am doubling down on my reading of Levi as well as the OSA work to get me through this. Thank you again for hosting this space.

It's a complex issue. I don't think any of us can know for sure why events have taken the bizarre and destructive turn that they've taken; all we can do is follow our conscience, keep our values intact, maintain our spiritual practices, and see what happens.

There has been something, maybe last Magic Monday, about planetary energies manifesting themselves during a mission to that planet. Does this only happen at manned missions, or does this happen at robotic missions, too? I remember something in this line be said about the Pluto flyby in 2015. Interestingly, any assertions about this subject could be tested: if the answer to my question is "yes", than the DaVinci and Veritas mission to Venus should release Venerian energies.

Dear JMG,

1. I'm currently reading John Michell's book The View Over Atlantis while working through the DMH. The discussion on ley lines made me wonder: is there a connection between the Ogham fews and ley lines? I ask, because you use a line to write multiple fews on, and all the marks made by each few which cross the main stem line almost look like roads or paths crossing a ley line if you imagine looking down at a map, if that makes sense. But maybe I'm reading in to something that isn't there. I'm doing Ogham pathworking at the moment, so I have a tendency to do so. :)

2. I realize now as I get going with pathworking that I should have meditated more on the Stations of the Wheel of the Year. I read the introduction to Paths of Wisdom on Amazon and I'm going to buy the book so that I can think further about the differences between the Tree of Life and the Wheel of Life. In the meantime, a question.

A Station is meant to show a magical state of consciousness or realm of experience, and as in the discussion on Lévi, the Stations may be like the elements in that they are filing cabinets to assign types of experience to. If I am under the sway of a Station, does that resemble the normal upswings and downswings of mood and energy levels I get in to? Or are these specific states something different from this and more specific to magic?

1) That's a fascinating idea that as far as I know hasn't been explored yet. If you're interested, see if you can find a well-documented ley and try to figure out what word it's spelling out.

2) Both. A Station corresponds to certain conditions of ordinary consciousness and certain conditions of magical consciousness.

What banishing rituals were used in the Western traditions before Levi? Was it a matter of hosing down a space with holy salt and water or having a sympathetic priest around?

What banishing rituals or equivalents did magical traditions outside of the west use? I recall that you were looking for translations of a Japanese Kuji-in manual as they could be used as a banishing ritual. I briefly skimmed Anthony Cummins’ “The Dark Side of Japan: Ancient Black Magic, Folklore, Ritual” and it had some material on Kuji-in.

1) The banishing ritual as such seems to be an invention of the traditions that Lévi learned and transmitted -- there's no evidence for them from before his time. The usual process in the grimoire literature was to trace a physical circle and use various prayers and invocations to protect it, and that was integrated into the overall ritual rather than forming an independent ritual.

2) You'd have to talk to people who know non-Western magical traditions! The kuji-in seem to have been used in much the same way in Japanese magical practice, but that's the one tradition I've read up on. I haven't read Cummins' book, and will have to remedy that!

Theurgy

1. I've read some online sources on theurgy, and am wondering whether this is the genre/larger category that DMH-DA falls into, rather than something that would be added to this curriculum? When I invoke Hu, air, and "its, gods, spirits, and powers," that sounds theurgical to me.

2. What reading do you recommend in terms of Druid Revival theurgical work, or is it all Iamblichus? I found Gregory Shaw's Theurgy and the Soul referenced quite a lot.

3. If theurgy relating to the Welsh gods in Revival Druidry would be breaking new ground, I'd be happy to put some elbow grease in. I already sing the SOP, the Universal Druid Prayer, and The Valley of the Black Pig by Yeats afterward. I think it's been noticed too, because a few weeks ago, right before I started the SOP, I heard someone say "It's the songbird." It happened too quickly for me to tell who it was, but it made me laugh!

1) The DMH-DA tradition, like most Western systems of high magic these days, is a mix of theurgy and thaumaturgy. It certainly doesn't need to be added in -- it's there.

2) I don't know of anyone who's written on the theurgy of the Druid Revival tradition at all! Iamblichus is probably your best bet, and Thomas Taylor's book on the Mysteries is also worth close reading.

3) I'm delighted to hear this -- and "The Valley of the Black Pig" is one of my favorite Yeats poems! It reliably gets the hair on the back of my neck to stand up. I'd encourage you to work with theurgic practice and see what you can develop.

I'm mildly curious about the effect of practicing sporadically. My crazy weeks and exhausting work load make me too tired to do full rituals or sometimes do them at all. I understood that if your practice falls off, you get rusty or dull and the effects of the ritual wanes. Like unused muscles, you have to work back into it.

I find the opposite is happening. If a period of time goes by in which I have not done any ritual, when I finally do one, the effect is markedly stronger than when I do it daily. Like a flash flood in a dry desert creek bed after a sudden downpour as opposed to a gently constant flow of water.

Was wondering why that was.

I just realized I forgot that yesterday that the moon went into Gemini and I should have taken my extra cell salts as per the Carey protocol. I took them this morning, but should I take the extra cell salts again later on today to make up for yesterday?

Yes, you can do that. As long as you take at least three doses, spaced as widely as you can manage, during the astrological window, you're fine. (I say at least three because I'm currently experimenting with 5, one dose every 12 hours or so, and the results seem to be good.)

Topically relevant to your photo, this is a question I have been curious to hear your thoughts on for a while. I have a friend who encountered a 'vampiric' sort of entity lurking around the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury, England. Ex-Beat poet, and Guenonian Traditionalist Charles Upton believes that it is dangerous to spend too much time in disused sacred sites, as they attract parasitic entities. What do you make of this?

A sacred site that is no longer guarded by the regular practice of appropriate rites can attract malefic beings. If you're going to spend time in such sites, and there can be good reason to do so, doing your own protective rituals there is a good idea.
