There are times when I wonder why so many people seem so freaky these days, and then I remember this.

This is the future we were supposed to get.  Two generations of Americans grew up being told that this was what they could expect, in newspaper ads like this one and in countless other venues. Next time you go for a walk or even look out the window, compare what you see to the image above, and measure the gap between them. The cognitive dissonance between the future we were told we were going to get and the one that's actually arrived is, I think, the single largest cause of the collective nervous breakdown unfolding around us right now.

I have to teach my neighbors how to darn socks and sew on buttons. People think they have to throw away clothes without learning to mend them. Embroidery can hide a mending as well as fancy the plain jeans up.

For that matter, I'd like to learn how to do darning. Knitting, too. I can't find good sweaters for sale anymore.

My husband found me this neat little darning loom that makes it much neater than I can do by hand. Think mine came from a Russian online seller, but there must be a zillion little home shops selling them all over.

That is a wonder! I have a couple of darning "egg" type tools, including one with a metal ring that keeps the tension of the fabric even, but this is beyond cool.
