JMG on Hermitix Podcast
Jun. 24th, 2020 07:33 pm
And another podcast for those who want to listen to something other than crowds frantically trying to find a statue of Emperor Palpatine to pull down, and settling for whatever they can get...I'm back on the Hermitix podcast, talking about the great Hermetic mage and mnemonist Giordano Bruno, his contributions to the Art of Memory, and his book On the Shadows of the Ideas. You can listen to it on the Hermitix site here and on YouTube here. Enjoy!

Date: 2020-06-25 02:06 pm (UTC)I'm trying to make the jump from "vulgar operations" of memory to memorizing information that I'd like to maintain long-term. I've got decent systems for memorizing numbers and letters (and playing cards) but have always struggled in putting it to use for other types of information. I think my problem is I need to make simpler lists of things I'd like to remember - I'm guessing if one puts to memory a skeleton framework of a subject, a lot of other details will associate to it fairly naturally.
Looking to try to start implementing some the combinatorial thought systems - and maybe come up with a list of topics and questions to work through on a regular basis to gain some skill in the practice.
Aside from reading about the art of memory in the West, I've done a little reading about memory in the Buddhist cultures as well. Regarding Bruno's subjects and abjects, I right away thought of the various bodhisattva's in tantric Vajrayana Buddhism - many of them have many arms and various objects in each hand, as a necklace, etc.
I'm aware this isn't unusual in religious artwork, but it just struck me that it was very elaborate in Tibetan Buddhism. And also that each bodhisattva has an associated mandala, which is a 2D representation of a palace, in which more mnemonic images were stored. I've heard that for the Medicine Buddha, the mandala palace associated with him contained a lot of the Aryuvedic medical system.
Anyways, great podcast, this and the last one have been very useful in making sense of Bruno's thought & significance.
Your podcasts!
Date: 2020-06-26 07:38 am (UTC)Really looking forward to this...I'll try to listen this weekend...
Another question/suggestion...I think someone either here or on the other website managed to compile a list of all you podcasts...is there a chance you can link it or put it here & there so we can find all of them in one place? Just like FAQ 101 ... It could be the Podcast List 101! ; P
Thanks,
J
