bruce with a striking thoughtIt's midnight, and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will not be put through.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.3 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

Cazimi election or affliction?

Date: 2025-09-15 04:14 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Two nights ago Mercury was Cazimi for a good many hours. But during that time he and the Sun were in opposition to Saturn and another malefic, one of the outer planets. Was this a usable election, or was that affliction enough to undo any benefit that might otherwise have accrued?

When projected into the zodiac, Pluto is currently in the same sign and degree as Altair. Would that be enough to spoil the upcoming, otherwise good Altair talisman election period when Mars will be applying to a trine with Jupiter?

Fantasy idea based on the hypothesis

Date: 2025-09-15 06:03 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I just came up with a cool fantasy novel idea that I might try based on JMG's Sixth Plane/Gnosticism experience! The key idea is simple; what if the majority in a world were foreign Gnostic spirits rather than native/Immanentist ones? The idea is, the majority are nomadic because being stuck in one place connects one with the world, which they live in horror of. The persecuted minority are Immanentists, and dangerously seek out spirits of place to make themselves into a dyadic being with one. The Gnostic Nomads revere the number one, while the Immanentists revere two. At first it is thought that they are merely different ethnocultural/religious groups, with the spiritual/soul incarnation element being revealed later in the story, in addition to a giant spiritual prison in another plane which the unincarnated gnostics fellows created, which can ensnare all native souls without a spirit of place connected to them. The goal of the initiatory mystery religion of the Immanentists is to protect as many of their fellows as they can while also finding the prison using spirit-journeying through the inner planes and let the rest of their world's native souls back into the incarnation process to help fight the invaders. Basically, the Immanentists ARE the Gnostics of their world, in the literal sense of Gnosis being hidden knowledge. The goal of the Gnostic nomads and their masters is simply to kill off the spirits of place of the world in order to make it yet another spiritual reservoir for incarnation/life-force harvesting for them in their conflicts with other types of beings on higher planes.

Please let me know if this sounds interesting to any of you, and any ideas/stuff based on actual magic/spirituality that might slot in. Also, book recommendations; I'm reading Couliano on Gnosticism right now, working my way through Fortune and Yeats as well, but others might be good to get background and inspiration. So far I'm thinking magic based partially on real stuff, (scrying, etheric awareness, rituals, natural magic) partially on rad superhero esque powers derived from different types of cloth created from different plants that grow in different places. Maybe the cloth also has to do with the connection process to the different spirits of place. I have NO idea if I'm good enough to pull this off (I've finished two novels and fragments of others, so I'm far from an expert writer) but it seems so cool!!!

Buying used wedding rings

Hello John
Is there anything i should be aware of when it comes to buying used wedding rings?

Can a ring or rings from a unhappy or bad marriage be detriemental to our marriage?
Should we do some sort of cleansing ritual?

I feel like buying used rings are just up mine and my fiancee alley.

Thanks

Dear JMG,

In Revisioning the Tree of Life, on pages 100-101, there is a table that lists the key correspondences to remember for all the paths. I noticed that, for the astrological correspondences, every planet is listed in its domicile, but Saturn in Capricorn wasn’t listed, which would make it the only sign not represented in the list. The paths for IX and X had the Moon in Cancer, Amber, and E Flat repeated twice. But, some of the other colors and notes are also repeated between paths, so maybe this was intentional? I just wanted to make sure the omission of Saturn in Capricorn wasn’t a typo?

I’m not yet at that point in the work, I had observed this during a read-through of the book, and because of the importance of that set of symbols, as the book notes, I wanted to check.

Thank you!

You’ve made some comments about how to live with natal squares and oppositions and convert their problems into strengths. Do you have any suggestions for a peregrine planet? While I can’t say there’s bad luck there, I’ve been struggling quite a bit and there’s a general sense of bewildering inertia.

Not a question, but a book recommendation.

Awhile ago, I posted a link to an essay about spider divination in Africa. The author of that essay has, along with Michelle aroney, edited a book titled “Divination, oracles and omens”.

It is a compilation of short essays on various divination systems throughout the world and history, that also has a lot of illustrations and photos of various implements such as astrological volvelles and Thai divination manuals. It is extremely interesting since it introduces quite a few obscure ways of divination, such as Tibetan rope divination and Ottoman astrology. I have almost finished reading it, and am quite pleased with it.

A Delivery

Date: 2025-09-15 10:41 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hey JMG,

I'm currently waiting for a package. To be specific, I've ordered Galina Krasskova's Northern Tradition for the Solitary Practitioner, which somebody recommended to me here several Monday's ago. My book store received the book about a week ago and sent it on via DHL to me. It should've been here the next day. I don't have a tracking number and neither does the book store. Last Thursday, divination indicated that DHL stopped processing the package.

Today, I did another reading with the SGO. I'm unsure about the proper interpretation, so here are the factors and cards:

Me: The Spiral reversed (Diminishing)
The package: Continuous Proportion (Correspondence)
Its arrival: The Isocahedron reversed (Passivity)

Clearly, passivity means that I need to take action. Correspondence seems to indicate some karmic component, though I don't really understand what. I have no clue how to read diminishing.

1) On the off-chance that I'm missing something obvious, do you have a better idea how to understand the above cards?

2) Apart from unsavoury things like asking spirits for goodies, is there a good method to induce the package's arrival? Given that I don't have a tracking number, I've exhausted all mundane avenues beyond asking for a refund, which I don't want.

Hello JMG and community,
One of my fundamental problems is that I have set myself the expectation that I must be perfect and cannot forgive myself for making mistakes. I have come to this realization through self-observation and discursive meditation. In your opinion, what would be a suitable affirmation or meditation to help me reduce these expectations?
Thank you very much.

Different perspectives on music&magic

Date: 2025-09-15 12:19 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I was reading Ted Gioia newsletter today, and followed a link to an article which he introduces: I celebrate the legacy of Layne Redmond (1952-2013)—drummer, scholar, teacher, and visionary. https://www.honest-broker.com/p/when-the-drummers-were-women?r=ljswa&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
Very interesting article about a woman who wrote When the Drummers Were Women - a spiritua history of rhythm. Gioia, in his post, makes a distionction that I have so far looked for in vain: dionysian/shamanic/ecstatic music and Pythagorean/(Apollonian?)/mathematical/rational. He says: "In my research, I had been reconstructing the musical roots of something I called “the Pythagorean rupture”—which involved a shift from a previous Orphic approach to song (magical, ritualistic, ecstatic) to a more codified Pythagorean system (rational, mathematical, disciplined). I now saw that Redmond had identified the same historical transition, but from the perspective of drumming and archaeology. We were both working toward integrating our hypotheses about music into larger sociohistorical theories of goddess cults and pre-patriarchic worldviews."

This rupture is clearly visible when I go to a workshop in Georgian polyphonic singing: classically trained musicians struggle with strange intervals that do not conform with western musical framework. It looks like what is not in their theory framework does not exist. Whareas me, no theoretical training, but a functioning ear, can get the hang of it with less trouble than those with expert training. This has always baffled me. But looking at this as different approaches to music makes this quite clear.

So what is my question? The magical tradition seems to me to be leaning more in the direction of Pythagorean/rational. And there seems to be a different approach, magical in a more earthy way - call it shamanic. Do you have anything to say about this? Or is there anyone who has looked at this? Shamanism research and occult tradition seem to live in their own silos. Are they pointing at the same thing or two different things?

Re: Different perspectives on music&magic

Date: 2025-09-15 02:38 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I haven't read the article yet, though I subscribe to Gioia's substack. I will read it later... but to answer your question, here are some of my own thoughts...: I have often thought of how much drumming is central to rock music and jazz, and how the influence of drumming and the emphasis on rhythm and timbre in modern music is sometimes at odds with the classical music tradition.

As contemporary music took on new influences from the world of music, you ended up with different schools of sound and various avant-gardes. For instance, I love minimalist music. It has an emphasis on rhythm, pulse in the faster kinds of Glass and Reich, but in its popular form as ambient music, an emphasis on timbre, texture, drones. All of this seems to be "shamanic" perhaps.

Rock music with the emphasis on drums, speed, and libidinal energy would certainly fit in the Dionysiac camp. I love that stuff... but I also like the Pythagorean approach very much as well, and there are lots of places where a vesica piscis is formed between different musical styles and methods.

Sanhkara and Yeats Mingling of Minds

Date: 2025-09-15 12:25 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
John, this meme goes well with the question I am going to ask... as related to the concept of "Sankhara" or "Samskara"

I had an intense dream on Sunday morning. Without going into all of it, at one point I was walking through a neighborhood in the wee hours of the morning, and there were all kinds of parties going on at different homes. I saw one where there was a Buddhist gathering. I ended up talking to a woman Buddhist priest who also happened to be one half of a lesbian couple, there with their children. Among the things she told me was something about clutching on to a word that sounded like "Sanghara" -and I was shown myself sleeping with some kind of copper or brass tube with Tibetan / Buddhist writing on it...

After waking I looked up the word and realized my dream was not Sanghara, but a mis-dream-translation of "Sanhkara" in the Pali but more often known as "Samskara." I've only got a cursory knowledge of Buddhism, but a bit more of an interest in Hinduism which I seem to have a connection to (though I practice the GSF work with Welsh deities because I am a druid at heart -but a universalist one). I have certainly heard the word Samskara in my reading, by Sanghara was more obscure... yet when I found Sanhkara it clicked, and also resonated with various karmic experiences I've been having the past month...

Later in the day I was thinking on the discussion over at the main blog about Yeats and his idea from A Vision

Do you have any thoughts on the relationship between the "mental dispositions" and formations caused by accumulated karma in eastern philosophy and religion and how that might relate to way our minds are mingled with the minds from other times that Yeats discusses? Also I thought of how the presence of ghosts and ancestral karma might mix together to exert "mental imprints" and Sankharic formations in a current life.

The Buddha, according to what I studied yesterday, said that the dispositions in our personality caused by the Sankhara's need to be purified rather than eliminated. This jibes well with occult philosophy that would also suggest we do not eliminate personality or ego and will, but rather purify them and bring them into alignment with the daemon / destiny.

Another thought here with regards to the daemon and Yeats... if the sanhkara in our minds gets activated to release karma, this can be seen as one of the ways that the daemon is being an adversary at the same time as a guardian. Those emotional attachments in the meme seem to cluster around certain nodes of Sanghara in our minds/personality...

Thanks for any thoughts you may offer on all of this.

Hi JMG,

My daughter wanted to join a youth activity group. Divination suggested this would be a good idea. She signed up, paid dues, and had an investiture ceremony.

But at the investiture ceremony, her membership pins were misplaced, so we had to just say she would receive them when found, instead of actually pinning them on as you're "supposed to" during the ceremony. Later, when I was sewing her "Investiture" patch onto her uniform, the needle broke. I must say, I have never had a needle break during hand sewing before!

I'm wondering whether this could or should be taken as a sign that there is something wrong with her investiture. Maybe she doesn't belong there after all (and that's why the pins even were lost, let alone the broken needle), or maybe the investiture did not "count" because of the lost pins? Is this a valid concern?

Hi JMG, thank you as always for this forum. I have had a pretty rough past year and had to pause my spiritual practices in the Golden Section Fellowship in order to tend to my mental health and material circumstances. I am feeling more stable now and my intuition is nudging me to pick things back up. I did a standard three card divination to check the situation with the question: "What do I need to know about restarting spiritual practice with the Golden Section Fellowship?" I received 32R Impossibility, 19 Generation, 27 Harmony. I feel good about this overall with Generation and Harmony as situation and outcome but am not sure how best to interpret Impossibility as the first card. I would appreciate your guidance here.

Mormon Baptism for the Dead

Date: 2025-09-15 02:41 pm (UTC)
slithytoves123: (Default)
From: [personal profile] slithytoves123

I had a thought the other day that went in an unexpected direction: Can the LDS habit of performing baptism for the dead have any effect?

The answer I came up with is "Yes, but not usually." It would presumably need the consent of the soul in question and/or the consent of the beings into whose care the soul has already been committed. Souls between incarnations are usually not in a fit state to understand, let alone, agree to the baptism. But maybe some do, especially those who were uncommitted or unfaithful in life. Or maybe sometimes the caretakers of the soul decide, yes, this is what's best for them.

What's the most likely outcome? That seems fairly simple: presumably a little bit nicer between-life state followed by the person being born into a Mormon family or into a family that will convert to Mormonism when the person is young.

This could help explain both the sustained growth of the LDS church and why so many Mormons are so faithful and happy with their faith: there could be some lingering subconscious gratitude to the faith for making their between-life state better.

Then I thought: it could also help explain why so many ex-Mormons are so bitter about being raised Mormon. Perhaps they have a lingering sense that they were bamboozled into a deal they now don't want.

I don't know. Just some weird speculation. I'm curious what your thoughts on baptism for the dead are.

JMG (and commentators),

Do you have any insights into the Hierophant in the Major Arcana?

For the first time ever in many years of on/off Tarot divination, the Hierophant keeps appearing. I have been doing very short 1-3 card readings, and it appeared 5 times in a row, which is far beyond chance and feels very…insistent. The readings were a mix of general daily readings and one that was a 3-card (past/present/future) spread asking about our country in the immediate aftermath of the Kirk assassination. The Hierophant appeared in the “past” position for that one.

I’m a churchgoer, and I pray regularly. The best I have come up with is that it is an encouragement to pray more, and to further involve myself in the church (formal religion, structure, etc.)

Do you have any other insight or personal experience with this card? It’s never appeared frequently (maybe at all?!) for me before now.

Thank you!

I recently had an experience while meditating in a local park of interacting with another consciousness.

It was a hot (though not unbearably so) summer day, and I was sat near a pond. As I was meditating I felt a change in the air (hard to explain, it just felt like "new air" came in, and it felt alive.)

I felt enveloped by this air, almost like a hug, very intimate but I wasn't feeling an emotional connection.

Then I felt my consciousness "float up." I had a vision of myself in a cloud. I saw various energy centers, and saw what seemed like electric charges passing between them. It seemed like some sort of electrical system in equilibrium. And then at a certain point I floated back into my body.

Aside from the sensation of the air and the vision of the inside of the cloud, I didn't feel much of a connection with the entity. Throughout the experience I felt a lot of gratitude (a more intense feeling of the gratitude I feel when in nature... I felt honored to have been "invited inside" for this experience.) This other entity didn't respond to that, he just wanted to show me something and I happened to be open to see.

What do you think I could have encountered?

Greetings JMG.......

Of all the different skills to train and master in order to to become an effective magician, I am having the most problems with visualisation. Are there specific excercises or books etc. that you can recommend that go deeper into that specific subject.

Thanx again as always....
Deepest regards......

I.

A few weeks ago, I asked about The Mothman and how to relate to Him. I got my answer. He is there to explore the Shadow and to face it. I received illumination during the Kirk killing and the reaction afterwards. The Mothman warns of coming doom, and how to react to it. Then walks people through the Shadow. So, I guess in my case, it is appropriate to have an altar to The Mothman.

In my natal chart Saturn (retrograde) is in Aries and in my 10th house. Parker's Astrology states there is a need to balance the energetic force of Aries with the caution and restriction of Saturn. Fair enough but recently, when asked about Saturn moving into Aries for the next couple of years, JMG said something like "Saturn will be raging in Aries". That's a bit stronger than a balancing act so for those that are well versed in natal astrology would you categorize it as a balancing act and a great opportunity to learn life lessons or will there always be debilitating aspect the Parkers didn't feel comfortable in explaining? To me, it's been a mixture of both but interested in how natal astrologers would cold read a chart with that placement.

I recently read that planets in a natal chart positioned below the Ascendant / Descendant Line are not as potent as those above. For any natal astrologer, do you give credence to that? Besides Saturn, the only planets I have above the ASC/DSC line are Mars (Aquarius) and the Moon (Capricorn) both in conjunction and in the 8th House.

Thank you in advance.
