flying sorceryMidnight is upon us and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will not be put through.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.3 of The Magic Monday FAQ here

Also:
I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The
image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week.  This is my eighty-second and most recent published book, a book on UFOs somewhat unoriginally titled The UFO Book. It's from the same publisher as my titles The Occult Book and The Conspiracy Book, and like them it's a coffee table book, with 100 vignettes from the history of unexplained things in the sky. It's not like my other book on the subject, The UFO Chronicles, in that I don't propose explanations -- this is purely a chronology of remarkable sightings from around the world and across the years. What's behind them? That's for you to decide. It was a fun project, and should be fun to read. Interested? You can get copies here if you live in the US, and at your favorite online or bricks-and-mortar bookstore otherwise.

I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.) If you're interested in political and economic astrology, or simply prefer to use a subscription service to support your favorite authors, you can find my Patreon page here and my SubscribeStar page here

Bookshop logoI've also had quite a few people over the years ask me where they should buy my books, and here's the answer. Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

And don't forget to look up your Pangalactic New Age Soul Signature at CosmicOom.com.

With that said, have at it!

Peace Pilgrim

Hi JMG, I was curious as to whether you'd ever heard of a woman who went by the name Peace Pilgrim. Having read her book, she seems to represent an amazing example of a wandering mystic in the modern age. You can see an informational website about her at https://www.peacepilgrim.org/.

From 1953 until her death in a car accident in 1981, she walked across the United States covering over 25,000 miles on foot. She had no possessions but her clothes and a few personal care items, having vowed to fast until given food and sleep in the open unless given shelter. She preached a message of nonviolence to anyone who would listen, giving sermons in churches and making several TV appearances over the years.

Her book given an account of her spiritual development that closely follows patterns seen in other mystics and saints. Given that she was active during most of the Cold War, I wonder if her influence helped prevent it from going hot. Whether or not you've heard of her I think her story could be interesting for your readership. Are there any similar figures from the 20th or 21st centuries you can think of?

1. Astrologically, how do I pick the best day to send greetings and introductions to colleagues, specifically other druids?
2. Who said, “Books talk to each other the way buildings do.”? I got a lecture on neglecting meditation from The Glass Bead Game just when I needed it. (Getting it back on track. “Lludd and Llefelys” is starting to make sense.) Is there a name for this sort of synchronicity? And who do I thank?
3. So0O0o-ah… I’m not finding supernatural cause for the incoherence our President causes in otherwise rational occultists and a few other adults, but I am seeing a failure of the imagination in not being able to see that the Changer is hard at work… you know… changin’ stuff that couldn’t possibly be changed. Or am I just a cynic? On the other hand, the populists seem to have engaged their imagination and their will to change the formerly permanent. The comic opera around the SHORT Act, for instance, masks a serious discussion of how to do away with an obsolete tax. And taxes never go away… do they? Am I correct to infer the Changer’s patronage?

Assisted dying

Date: 2025-06-30 05:21 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
What does the western esoteric/occult tradition(s) say about the ethics and impact of what is called medically-assisted dying (i.e. euthanasia)? Would there be any distinction between this and ordinary suicide? I have a friend who has been suffering tremendously for 15 years due to severe iatrogenic harm, and has been approved for assisted dying in Europe. She finds solace in knowing that is available (she was approved for it 2 or 3 years ago, so all she would have to do is "say the word" and it could be arranged within weeks), but a large part of her naturally does not want to go that route. In my view there is real healing possible for her and we have been exploring those possibilities, but she faces a tough, demanding road back to health, regardless. My thinking is that- while "assisted dying" may end the pain on the physical plane for now, the spiritual and karmic layers she is working through would remain to be dealt with on other planes and in future incarnations. What do you think? I guess what I am asking is, is the idea of assisted dying as an "end to suffering" valid in some sense, or is it all illusory? Even if the karmic work remains to be done, is there any benefit to a person/soul to getting a reset and facing it in another lifetime, possibly with some wisdom and experience they are unable to access now in a body wracked with pain and difficulty? Appreciate any perspective you have!

The business of teaching a simple SoP

Hi JMG,

1.) might I ask, what would be a good recommendation for astrological election to start a business? Side gig with first projects in selling wood products. Prospects to expand in some electronics later.
1.) b. Any other magic recommendations for a favourable setting up of a business? Natural magic, … (DMH practitioner, planetary devotion, MOE) I can say st. Joseph will most probably figure in someplace.

2.) this might be a bit strange, but some people have noticed that there is beneficial stuff happening around me with no explanation as to why. And there were tentative questions about what one can do once they get a whiff of me praying and knowing some stuff. Although I am loathe to disclose my practices and involvements, it tends to make normal people uncomfortable. And hitting people on the head with the DMH/DA or Israel Regardie’s “pocketbook” proclaiming: “thou shall walk the path of SORCERY!” seems like overload.
I have been thinking of dropping hints to some simple practices. SoP and MOE as entry drugs:
- “you have noticed that the world now is full of bad “tension”? I was told this protects and cleans you a bit. Seems to work for me and is easy to do in the morning”
- “well you know “what goes around comes around” I found this and the concept seems positive to me. Instead of cursing everyone or thing around me for the injustice of being within eyesight of me when I am commuting from my frustrating job, I try and turn my thoughts positive and send them positive intentions. You know I feel better myself after my buss ride.”

Any thoughts? Has anyone had any experience with giving advice to others how to start?

Best regards,
V

Lunar Plexus

Hi JMG,

In John Gilbert's material that you were publishing on this blog not that long ago, Lunar Plexus is mentioned a couple of times as the point 2 inches below the navel at the midline of the body. This is the equivalent to Japanese Hara and Chinese lower Dantien. I tried to find more mentions of Lunar Plexus online and, so far, I could only trace it to a couple of places saying that "some Western esoteric systems call this point Lunar Plexus"... I'm not sure where to go from here.

Do you know where could John Gilbert pick up the idea of Lunar Plexus? Or maybe you are aware of any of those "Western esoteric systems" that use it?

I would greatly appreciate any clues or leads on this topic!

Hello archdruid,
i've read the Glastonbury report and it mentions that Tower and hill were used for generating lunar current. My question is can earth mound and a tree(oak, specifically) be used for the same purpose? The specific mound i think about is Krakus Mound in Cracow. The oak is gone since christianization but archeologist have confirmed that it was there, no burial have been found, the dating is uncertain, from celtic in second century bc to late slavic. mound is located on a limestone hill.

Hotfoot

Date: 2025-06-30 12:12 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG,

Trying to keep a long story short.

A person who I believe to be an energetic vampire/devouring mother type is in a relationship with a family member. I identified this pattern early on and I keep my distance and don't interfere as the family member is a consenting adult and seems to enjoy it.

Now this new person is moving closer to be with family member and has clearly started this behaviour on other members of the family. Their goal seems to definitely be to create a group of people who are dependent on them and give her their energy (and maybe money, keeping the story short though). Adults can adult themselves, and I personally draw a clear boundary in words and behaviour and don't give in but they are also targeting a mentally vulnerable elderly relative and the kicker, my minor child.

I do the daily banishing, pray, and have gotten my partner on board with giving this person no alone time with my child and almost no group time either. We will have to still see them a handful of times per year. After the most recent what I'll call, boundary violation, I got fed up and thought, I should just get some hotfoot powder and if I get raspberry jam/karma for protecting my child from them, so be it.

I went on luckymojo and looked it all up and decided that the next time this person did or said something that was inappropriate that would be the trigger and I would buy it then. I then spent about 10 minutes thinking about how to do it including visualizing the action.

1-A few hours after visualizing it, I realized this person was completely gone as a mental connection for me. Clearly for months, we've been entangled as I try to figure out how to deal and get un-entangled. I had also previously offered blessings, as in the blessing walk, and only ever gotten a chaotic response. Now when I do it, my minds eye sees them running from me. Is is possible I did a form on mental magic that scared them? All the anger I felt about this person is gone, they are are just gone in my mind. If I did do mental magic, do you think that extends to protection for my child? Did I break the connection?

2- After realizing this I searched for hotfoot in your previous MMs. There was some discussion that it actually might be a curse and somewhat evil. That is not my intention at all. I have no wish to harm this person but I do want them out of my child's life and am willing to bear the consequences of protecting my child. Was there a conclusion that hotfoot is mild or too powerful in a bad way?

3-I would accept any other advice and prayers for protecting my child from someone who wants to act as an energy vampire in their life. I banish daily, pray, am ok with anything from the ENM.

Thank you.

Psychic Vampires Anonymous

Not OP, but given the topic comes up semi regularly, it seems psychic vampirism is not as uncommon as one would hope and given the low amount of general magical literacy it seems one could be doing so unconsciously or without realizing the implications of what they're doing.

What signs would one look for to determine if they're being psychically vampiric and how would one go about breaking the habit?

Is Big Tech Cursed?

Date: 2025-06-30 12:38 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] anonymoose_canadian
I've been thinking a lot about the intersection of magic and the internet lately, and have started to wonder if part of the problem is that the tech world is under the influence of a self-inflicted curse. As I understand it, curses are caused by recognizing (on some level) that a pattern of thinking and behavior held will lead to some sort of doom, and then refusing to do anything about changing the problematic pattern of thinking and action, and that the curse works out as a consequence of the frantic effort to do anything other than the one thing that will prevent the horrific fate.

Well, if this is the case, then it seems like there is a good case to be made that there is a self imposed curse on the tech world. Quite a few people correctly anticipated exactly why an advertising business model would inevitably lead to disaster, including, most famously, Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

The problem though is that there is so much money to be had with advertising, especially with the promise of targeting individuals, and some of the core myths of the internet make it very hard for people to imagine alternatives, even as they are thriving. The result is that nearly all of these people who correctly explained why advertising would corrupt and ruin the internet eventually dove into an advertising business model; and their prior concerns were proven right. This seems like a phenomenal way to induce a self-imposed curse, and would explain a lot of the oddities of the tech world.

Do you think this sort of analysis is plausible?

Hi JMG,
Thanks as always for hosting this.

I’ve begun studying the Coelbren book and I’m impressed with the amount of practices and ways to utilize these letters.

My question is: would the Coelbren alone (with say the SOP thrown in for good measure) be sufficient for a standalone system of initiation and inner work? I’m thinking particularly the meditation and scrying to unlock and balance one’s consciousness, combined with the practical magic to help balance things that are more challenging to face.

I searched on the web and it doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of folks writing or talking about using the book to its full extent. To me it seems very underrated.

Thanks,

Moving physical

Date: 2025-06-30 02:53 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG,
As you know, my very powerful and accomplished friend died a few weeks back. She was a week short of 98 and sharp as a tack right up to being anesthetized in hospital.

She took two objects off my altar and has since returned them both. She left both objects on the left side of my desk as she was left handed. I thought that was really cool and that she was very powerful.

Then, I talked to a mutual friend who is a very organized and neat aspie. He keeps a bucket of gardening tools by his greenhouse in the same place all the time. The whole bucket went missing for several days. He searched high and low for it. After a few days of this, he set out on a walk all around the seven acres of his property to visit each plant that he might have tended to see if he left his tools there. He had no luck at all only to walk back into his yard and find the whole bucket sitting about two feet from where it usually lives. He believes it was our mutual friend playing a trick on him to let him know she is fine.

I wondered if you could explain how she was moving these very heavy objects? I know everything is made up of energy alone. Is she able to move the energy?

Also, I have recently completed the Rising Dragons only to have a very sharp and obvious improvement in my health. I was on thyroid medication for about twenty years and can no longer tolerate it. I feel fine. Thanks for that.

I have been practicing rituals in my grove in meditation. It seems to be a very effective way for me to learn. In your opinion, is this a good practice?

Maxine

Mantra meditations with GSF

From: [personal profile] mediawakeboard

Hello JMG,

I have been practicing Transcendental meditation for about a year now. While I was at it I started preparing for initiation into the GSF. It only now occurred to me that, the two thing could conflict in some way.

The only experience I have with occult work is your Workbook, The Way of the Golden Section book and the Doctrine part of Levy's book

Also, I was wondering if you could help me out with my card readings. Specifically with the Golden Proportion card reversed.

I received it multiple times during last week divination and after a scrying (asking "What was the most important lesson of this scrying?"). I am not a one to freak when receiving a negative cards. But this one just confused me.

If I receive this card for me in a daily divination, does it mean that I am just somehow not good enough for facing the world today?

Or when I received it after the scrying session, does it mean there is no lesson to be learnt here ?

Hey JMG,

Unfortunately, my brother's vehicle was stolen as of yesterday and while we engage the authorities to see if there might be any leads, I'm wondering what options we may have on the spiritual side of things.

1. Would engaging in a planetary charity to either Jupiter or Mercury for a positive outcome be one course of action?

2. Would you recommend any particular hoodoo spells for the return of lost/stolen items?

Thanks,

Hello JMG,

First I’d like to offer some thanks for your advice last week on how to approach and pray to deities. I wasn’t the querent on that post, but I saw it and afterward said to myself, “hey now, that doesn’t sound so hard does it?”

For years, as something of an “intellectual polytheist” I’ve had a lot of trouble actually approaching deities. It’s been a combination of it seeming to be so daunting of a task (likely due to many centuries of western cultural conditioning on what the divine is affecting my thinking on the matter), plus my usual habit of analysis paralysis.

So I went ahead and approached a healing deity as a wise elder (regarding some ailments I’ve been suffering from) and later that evening I suddenly found myself obsessively reading up on Greek humoral medicine and some topics related to herbalism. I don’t think there was any coincidence to this and I’m guessing the message she was sending me was something like, “Well, I’m not going to fix your problems for you, but here is a swift nudge in the right direction, as far as you figuring out how to get your own health back in order!” I hope I’m not premature in chalking this up as a case of “TSW!”

Either way, I feel a ton more comfortable approaching deities, and I want to thank you immensely for spelling out your advice in such clear, simple terms!

Now a few questions on that:

1. Does Greek humoral theory of medicine deal with purely physical body or are the qualities it describes (dry, wet, warm, cool) that of the etheric body?

2. For you or anyone in the commentariat who has any experience with this: I’ve seen a lot of conflicting information on what sort of foods are suitable for different humors. Some advice says that one should eat foods corresponding to their own temperament, like a Melancholic person eating cool and dry foods. Most of the other advice I’ve seen though says people should eat foods that balance out their temperament, like a primarily Melancholic person eating foods of the opposite humor, i.e. warm and moist foods to counteract their innate dryness. Which do you think is better advice?

3. Can the SOP be modified for summoning healing energies and banishing ailments?

On other topics:

4. Do you see any of the major alt-spiritualities and occult teachings of recent times surviving the ongoing implosion of the urban monoculture (i.e. the pan-western laptop class and everything adjacent to it). My fear is that hoomans gonna hooman (like always) and the baby will get thrown out with the bathwater when the new cultural zeitgeist rises in reaction to the urban monoculture’s demise. We already see some of these thought patterns circulating among the conspiratorial end of the populist subculture, where anything that’s not mainstream Christianity gets binned as some evil subversive thing meant to “destroy western civilization.” At the same time, the other end of the political spectrum seems to have done everything in its power to make the various alt-spiritualities live up to the usual strawman stereotypes detractors like to smear them with.

Not JMG, of course, but if you haven't yet heard of it or checked it out, I'd strongly recommend The Humoral Herbal by Stephen Taylor, which posits that humoral medicine is the West's version of energetic medicine. It includes a fairly extensive, but by no means exhaustive (especially if you live in the US and not England) list of herbs and their humoral associations/effects. It also gives advice on what characteristics certain foods have, though again, I wish this were more extensive, and also I wish it were easier to reference.

Your 2. was one of my early points of resistance with the information in the book, which I haven't read all the way through, much less put much of into practice, but which I have found interesting and valuable where I have gotten into it. Taylor recommends eating foods that balance your predominant humor - so, if you're a choleric like me, lots of cool and wet foods. I unenthusiastically put this into practice for a while, but wasn't very happy, as all of my favorite foods and drinks are hot and/or dry. So, I also asked JMG about it, and he pointed out that while the goal is "balance," your "center" will be closer to your main humor. For me, that would mean that I likely want/need to eat more hot/dry foods than a melancholic, but should keep an eye on my tendency to over-indulge in such things. Since I adopted that approach, I've been both happier and, perhaps, healthier.

Your mileage may, of course, vary.

Cheers,
Jeff

JMG,

In response to a question from the group, there was a discussion at the Abbey concerning temple technology which eventually moved on to techniques to experiment with in one's garden (e.g. tube full of rocks or a small standing stone of a particular type and proportions).

This came up during a couple of Magic Monday's some time ago but all I can find is the Ecosophia.net post The Word that Made the Fields Flourish.

Also, does your book The Secrets of the Temple provide suggestions or experiments one may attempt to increase fertility at garden scale?

Hello John. At Glastonbury you mentioned (presuming that I both recall correctly and comprehended sufficiently - please correct any mishearing and/or misunderstanding) the view that Aeons (30 of them?) are ever-present immanent spiritual beings continually speaking throughout creation, and that you have identified yourself as "speaking" the words of the Aeon called "Natura". I was intrigued!

As best as I can discover from a cursory look into this undoubtedly vast subject, there are a number of different arrangements, numberings and names given by Gnostics to the spiritual beings called Aeons, and none of the ones I was able to find and peruse included "Natura" as a member, and now I am wondering where I might be able to learn more about the specific scheme you yourself are most familiar with.

I'd be grateful for a couple of sentences from your own perspective as to the manner in which your "speaking" is connected to/arising from the immanent "speaking" of Natura in creation.

Has anybody here read either of Francis Young’s recent nonfiction books, Magic in Merlin’s Realm (history of the occult in British politics) or Silence of the Gods (a history of the last pagans in Europe, in the Baltics)?

His Twitter is very good and there are many things about him that suggest he is “Ecosophia-ish”. For starters, he is willing to entertain the possibility of paranormal phenomena as being real, and he is not “woke.”

Would love to hear opinions on these books!

Hi Kyle, my husband Josiah could use Healing Hands this week, please. He’s dealing with scorpion stings that have been severely affecting his right hand and arm for several days (not great for a right-handed manual laborer!)

Do you have any favorite planetary charity options for the Sun?

Would eyesight/vision preservation charities be Solar?

I have read that honey is Solar but also that honeybees are Jovial—is this correct?

Thank you as always for hosting this forum!
