I don't know much about its effects -- drug culture has never been a major interest of mine -- but a glance at online info suggests that you may be right. If drugging somebody into numbness is the only way to deal with their depression, that suggests that a far more effective remedy would be to get out of the situation that's causing the depression. Of course that won't be the approved therapy; psychiatrists have by and large fully embraced the disease management model, which consists of keeping patients sick and profiting from their illnesses rather than, you know, doing something to help them get better.
