Ernest Thompson SetonIt's getting toward midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. (I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me and the teachers who influenced them in turn.
Four weeks ago I started on the OBOD end of my lineage with past Chosen Chief Philip Carr-Gomm. Last week we got to John Hargrave, founder of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, and that inevitably brings us to Ernest Thompson Seton, the Canadian artist and naturalist who founded the Woodcraft movement in 1902.  Seton was an extraordinary polymath, a talented artist, author, naturalist, storyteller and educator, who devoted his whole adult life to the attempt to remind a society drunk on its own technological gimmickry about the value of wild nature. (His works are long out of copyright and you can download many of them for free here.; the E.T. Seton Institute also has a very good collection of them here.) Seton's contacts with the occult scene of his time were significant; his first wife, Julia Seton, was an important New Thought author who wrote one of the better books on esoteric work with the solar plexus (available here), and the Red Lodge, the inner circle of the Woodcraft movement, had its own ritual text, which you can download here. That's him below on the right, teaching some young men about camping.

Bookshop.org is an alternative online bookstore that supports local bookstores and authors, which a certain gargantuan corporation doesn't, and I have a shop there, which you can check out here. Please consider patronizing it if you'd like to purchase any of my books online.

Good Evening,

If you're here in the northern hemisphere, I hope you're enjoying the weather as it heats up.

To Share: More on Spengler this week - I try to get a handle on what he means when he contrast "Time" with "Destiny" and "Space" with "Motion": https://jpowellrussell.com/#understanding_spengler_s_decline_of_the_west_bit_4

To Put Forth: No question this week - instead, to give a little something back to this community, I'd like to offer complimentary divination readings, either Ogham or Runes. Head on over here if you have a question you'd like me to put to one of those oracles: https://jprussell.dreamwidth.org/7462.html

As always, thanks very much to JMG and everyone else here for all that you do.

To any who will have them, I put forth my blessings and best wishes,
Jeff

What are your recommended books/resources for learning more about spagyrics? I've successfully made one spagyric tincture (lemon balm) and am excited to do more!

And is there any reason why astragalus root would be unsuitable to use for a spagyric tincture?

I keep seeing triple digits when I look at the time - e.g., 4:44 or 2:22 etc. This has been happening for weeks. It's like there's something compelling me to look at my watch at that particular time.

Is there any significance to triple digits like this?

I've had a repeated, terrible experience where my spouse will become angry with me and give me a frightening look like a demon glare. For a day or two afterward I will hear her in my head screaming at me. It gets so bad that when I am on the road I will find myself shouting back and swerving erratically into traffic.

Last time it happened it felt like there was a demon tearing at me, and I was overcome with the desire to crash my car. As the day went on I became extremely ill. When I got home she was upset that I was so sick because, she said, this was the first good day she had had in months, and any time she feels good I always try to drag her down. As far as I know, I do nothing of the kind and wish she would be in a better mood more often.

Do these things have an occult or magical cause, in your view? Or am I simply going crazy? If an occult cause, what can be done? -- I've tried the LBRP and it seems totally ineffective in this case.

Hello Archdruid,

I’m looking for resources on prayer especially stuff outside of the usual Christian and New Age circles.

The Ecosophia prayer list has got the hamster running on their wheels in my head and I have a germ of an idea growing, just need to figure out which direction to read in.

Death and space

Date: 2023-05-22 05:27 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I have been reflecting on your statement a few years ago when I believe you tried to make a ternary out of life and death, stating "space, not death, is the opposite of life". It's sat with me as a philosophical worm in my brain since.

In the context of your theory that there's some sort of cosmic eclipse going on at the moment, on the second cosmic plane, it makes a lot of sense. What I think it points to is that real death, as in a force entirely alien to the solar system, comes from without, not within, and this would be of a particular concern when the guiding function of the central sun is lost.

I suspect that Gods, and people in touch with Gods, can network around it so to speak, and the Gods and logos probably work around it perhaps by their own friendly cosmic contacts, but without that cosmic guiding function, the void, or true death, grows stronger during that time.

I also note Fortune's comments around how the Ring Chaos is not the Unmanifest. It's the response of the Unmanifest to the Ring Cosmos. This means that the rather scary void of space which reflects the Ring Chaos is not the Unmanifest, of which we can't know much at all.

I offer this because it's so easy to equate void with a universal or cosmic "bad", when the stuff we are made from ultimately and which binds us all we can't possibly fathom.

Here are all of the requests for prayer that have recently appeared across the Ecosophia community. Please feel free to add any or all of the requests to your own prayers.

If I missed anybody, or if you would like to add a prayer request for yourself or anyone who has given you consent (or for whom a relevant person holds power of consent) to the list, please feel free to leave a comment below.

* * *

This week I would like to bring special attention to the following prayer requests.

shewhoholdstension's 41 year brother Robert died suddenly in bed on May 15th; for a smooth and blessed journey on the other side. Robert was a single dad and he leaves behind three children: Hannah, Zack, and Jordyn; that they and shewhoholdstensions be blessed and protected, and find what comfort they can during this very difficult time.

T.A. ("Epileptic Doomer") has seizures that have been increasing in intensity, and worries about it causing further brain damage and even costing them their job; for blessings, protection, and healing, a reduction of intensity and frequency to the seizures, and for a path for navigating their illness in a way that helps them lead their best possible life.

Patricia Mathew's friend Al (Alison Kulp) was, the last we'd heard, in the hospital with a nasty life-threatening MRSA infection; please pray for her to be blessed, protected, and completely healed as soon as is possible. (Update here.)

Lp9's request on behalf of their hometown, East Palestine Ohio, for the safety and welfare of their people and all living beings in the area. (Lp9 gives updates here and most recently here, and says "things are a bit... murky"), and the reasonable possibility seems to exist that this is an environmental disaster on par with the worst America has ever seen. At any rate, it is clearly having a devastating impact on the local area, and prayers are still warranted.

* * *

If there are any among you who might wish to join me in a bit of astrological timing, I pray each week for the health of all those with health problems on the list on the astrological hour of the Sun on Sundays, bearing in mind the Sun's rulerships of heart, brain, and vital energies. If this appeals to you, I invite you to join me.

Guidelines for how long prayer requests stay on the list, how to word requests, how to be added to the weekly email list, how to improve the chances of your prayer being answered, and several other common questions and issues, are now to be found at this link.

To Ask:

After reading your essay over on the blog the part about falling in love also being considered a goddess left me thinking. The other examples, like the weather are outside of me but falling in love is very much in the in between. So are these human psychic responses considered works of the gods too? I had never considered the gods to be so close! I reflexively think of them out there and far away instead of part of my psyche, or acting on it.

To share: same as Jeff, I'm offering divination readings free of charge on my journal using Geomancy or the Tarot. I couldn't get time last week but I'll reply to questions this week. Divination Offering

Reality of shaman

Date: 2023-05-22 06:24 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Greetings JMG,

I would like to ask you about something you said on the Dodcast. You said about Merlin: „… the reality of a great dark age shaman.“ What is a shaman, and how do shaman differentiate themselves from occultists and mages.

You also mention the tradition of preserving elders in burrow mounds, or mummy’s in budist temples, has stretched from Western Europe throughout Eurasia to Japan. What form did it take in central and Eastern Europe, or in Central Asia?

Best regards,

Cosmic Doctrine

Date: 2023-05-22 06:48 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Morning John
I’ve reached chapter 12 of your brilliant commentary on the cosmic doctrine and I’m little confused. The text says that each of us has a cosmic atom in the heart of our being. Then it goes on to talk about secondary atoms that are created from their tracks in space. I understand that. Where I get lost is the reference to “seed-atoms”. Are these the original cosmic atoms or the secondary atoms? Because the text goes on to state that the seed atoms are part of our form, and infers it’s the secondary atoms not the cosmic atoms, which seems a contradiction.
Another thing that puzzles me, is why the 7 planes are reversed in the Solar system so that the material plane is next to the logos? It seems odd given the solar system is supposed to mimic the cosmos in its nature.

FHR - imagining and visualisation

Date: 2023-05-22 06:54 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi!

I am studying FHR papers right now, but I have not begun the work yet.
In one of the papers a distinction is made between imagining and visualising. I find the explanations a bit unconvincing. In my case what I imagine I visualise and what I visualise I imagine.
I don't really understand the difference. Am I missing something there?
Admittedly I am a very visual person and I day dream a lot.
Many Thanks!

For those who wonder what abbreviations like OBOD and LBRP mean, I've compiled a list of Ecosophia abbreviations.

The image shows Ernest Thompson Seton on a camping site in white clothing. That's like adding an extra level of difficulty! Solar Plexus works well for me, thanks for linking to a book on that subject.

To ask: I've got a friend who is lost in the news. His talking points come from TV, his emotions relate to TV shows, he is constantly drawn to a news app on his mobile phone. It's almost like he is living outside his physical body. Given Dion Fortune's definition of magic as "changes in consciousness in conformity with the will", perhaps magic might offer some help here. What magical options are there to call him to events in his physical surroundings?

More MOE

Date: 2023-05-22 08:07 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG

A couple of queries about MOE Master material and the attunement if I may? I’m just going to cut to the chase as short on time!

1. You’re speeding up the delivery of material/attunement. Am I understanding right that as long as we’ve made a start on the Master material and intend to continue you’re OK with us receiving the attunement? In my case it’s solely been the basic BOL, but I’m looking ahead and thinking how I could apply the rest.

2. I re-read all the Master material covering the BOL. It suggests things like establishing the BOL in the morning and “having it ready” for when needed. The BOL always needs to be toward a specific target though, yes? So this isn’t a case of opening the BOL in general (akin to activating one’s hands in morning but not using them)?

3. I don’t do Healing Breath, though am thinking I might have to find a way to fit it in after all as it sounds like it ties a lot of MOE together, and I’m getting a lot out of MOE….but until then can I seek reassurance that any and all mention of “healing breath” throughout material can be disregarded as long as I’m still keeping up discursive meditation?

More specifically with example of the following:

““The Essene Healing Voice may be activated by establishing yourself in the Essene Healing Breath, activating your Essene Healing Hands of Love, placing the four Elemental signs of Earth, Water, Fire and Air on your throat with your right index finger, and tapping your third eye three times with that same finger. “”

...for me, trying this practice might mean just doing some relaxation/fourfold breath prior to activation, as I think I’d like to keep it separate entirely from the discursive practice.

Hope that makes sense!

MOE Master Teacher; rituals and incense

Date: 2023-05-22 08:08 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Good morning everybody,

And thank you very much to you, JMG, for tirelessly hosting this space and answering questions.

I‘ve got a few practical things today, and would very much appreciate your replies:

The MOE Master Teacher:

1. In taking the Master Teacher, will there be any commitments one might want to be aware of in advance? I.e. any vows, promises, …?

2. And are there any expectations from your end about what a Master Teacher should or shouldn‘t do, e.g. with regards to the actual „teaching“, passing on of attunements, etc?

Incense in rituals:

3. For longer rituals in which incense is used, what does one do if the incense burns out? Simply leave it be and pretend it would still be burning? Light a new one in the midst of the ritual? (I‘m thinking about e.g. GSF or FHR initiations or similar lodge work)

4. And in the GSF initiation in particular, is the incense supposed to be lit at the very start, before the candidate leaves and re-enters the room? Or right before the lodge opening? (Does the difference even matter?)

Thanks - and if you would have them, my blessings to you and your wife, and may your week be productive, happy and healthy!

Middle Pillar - PoW vs. CoP

Date: 2023-05-22 08:20 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG,

If I'm reading both texts correctly, it appears that Paths of Wisdom instructs the reader to perform only one vibration of each Name during the Middle Pillar while Circles of Power calls for four repetitions of each Name. Could you elaborate on the differences in effect between these versions? If one had no experience with the Middle Pillar but suitable preliminary practice with the LRP, is one form of the MP better to start with?

Thanks!

Reddit egregor and robe fabrics

Date: 2023-05-22 09:46 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hey, JMG. Thank you for providing this forum as always. Two unrelated questions this time:

1) I've been a moderator for a small creative writing forum on Reddit for a while now, and the discussion about egregors last week made me think. Reddit has of course been cracking down hard on any kind of dissent from mainstream narratives lately, especially on the woke/Democratic Party sacred cows of Covid/LGBT/Ukraine. IIRC even simply questioning declarative gender is a ToS violation and potential grounds for a ban by now.

So, my question: am I getting a share of the karmic consequences of all this censorship and the taint of (what I see as) the increasingly shrill and authoritarian Reddit egregor by remaining in my position as voluntary moderator? These topics don't come up in our forum directly since it's focused on writing, but the fact that I'm expected to enforce these (again IMO) misguided and unwise rules makes me pretty uncomfortable. I've already been considering quitting for a while for other reasons, like cutting down on my internet usage, but I'd be grateful for your thoughts on the karmic side here.

2) I'm working my way through the Gates of the Elements in the DMH, but I've started putting my gear together for when I get to the Grove ritual. I'm considering buying a linen robe, but I think you've said in some of your writings that linen isolates against magical energies? Would it be a bad idea to wear a robe made of a fabric that isolates you against the energies you're trying to invoke, or am I misunderstanding?

Again, thank you for your time!

Dear JMG, in John Gilbert's book The Doors of Tarot, there are some instructions under the chapter How To Develop Your Intuition for some tension and relaxation exercises, and breathing exercises. The chapter includes some tips about the types of minds that pop up during these exercises (rational, subconscious, imaginative minds, etc).

Are these exercises meant to attain the same state of consciousness which is useful for discursive meditation? It seems to be a variation on the exercises often given for the preparatory exercises for discursive meditation.

Thank you!

Free birth chart analysis and astrology readings

From: [personal profile] eudaimonia
Hey everyone,

I posted here last week about providing free natal readings. Here is my updated post giving more details: https://eudaimonia.dreamwidth.org/592.html

If you would like a reading, please comment here, on the post on my journal, or email me at GoodSpiritFitness@gmail.com.

Things I will need for the reading:
1. Birth time, in hours and minutes.
2. Birth location (city and state, or latitude and longitude).
3. Birth date (month, day, year).

I do not need your name or details about you. You can keep everything as private as you’d like. I also suggest NOT posting your birth information directly on these public journals, but you can share your email if you’d like, I’ll reply, and we can go from there.

The reading will include a traditional square birth chart showing the celestial factors, and a summary of your temperament, manners, and wit, with all astrological details listed. Also included is the chart spirit/guardian spirit name and rising degree sign, which can be used in magical operations and for guidance.

I’ll be adding readings for specific life areas in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for those as well!

This is more a commentary I would like to share with the regular readers here than a question. On one of those YouTube channels that feature people discussing their positive near-death experiences, there was one man who discussed the three kinds of spirit-bodies we humans have. What was interesting about this is that it sounded almost exactly like what western occultism teaches about this subject. According to this man, he was told on "the other side" that we have a "mental body" (the mental sheath), an "emotional body" (the astral body), and while I forget what his word was for the third kind of body, he said that our physical body needs this particular spirit-body in order to move and function, so it's not a stretch to recognize this one as the etheric body.

I found this interesting, because when I arrive on the other side after this incarnation, the first thing I'm going to wonder is if the map of spirit-worlds above our physical world is somewhat valid and accurate, or just something people with nothing better to do made up out of whole cloth. These three bodies are supposed to correspond to the levels of the spirit-world, so this account could be construed as validation of the western occult "map" of the worlds above our own.

I have two questions about the CGD, on the elemental visualizations for The Rite of the Rays. And one unrelated, to spelling.

1. Times of the day and seasons are associated with the elements. Should this be applied to the visualizations (for example, earth during a winter night)?

2. Spirits seems to be missing, unless it is the white seasonless and timeless star over our heads inside the star field. Is this correct?

3. Should the first letters in the element names be capitalized (Earth or earth)?

Thanks for the Magic Mondays!

I am highly introverted by nature, and when I am in a large social gathering I end it completely drained, to the point that I have to sleep away the next day to feel normal again. Is there a way to mitigate this, to consciously participate in the social energy exchange so that I'm not so consistently on the losing end of it?

Other imbalances besides melancholy

Date: 2023-05-22 02:07 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hello, and thank you for hosting these. As I understand it, from a strictly historical standpoint, the modern label of depression and the older label of melancholy both point to approximately the same thing (but of course not quite). I've read parts of e.g. Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy and found them edifying historical information. Do you happen to know of any older labels that have a similar relationship to ADHD and/or Aspergers? Or, are there even any strong historical correlates?

Again, I'm just asking about historical perspectives. Thank you for any pointers--I know enough to know about Burton but not enough to know how to explore this tangent.

On 2) If you're on a desktop browser and logged into your dreamwidth account, you should see a search box at the very bottom of the left-side menu - under Profile, Archive, Tags, and so forth. But if you're not logged in, it's not there. For MM purposes, checking the "include comments" box is pretty much required!

On a mobile device, it's way, way down at the bottom of the page, and again, you have to be logged in for it to be visible.

Hope this helps!
