Peter DavidsonIt's getting on for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ hereAlso: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.

The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me. Last week we talked about Thomas Burgoyne aka Norman Astley of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor (H.B. of L.), one of the teachers of Sylvester Gould; this week's honoree is the other major figure in the H.B. of L., Peter Davidson. Davidson was born in Scotland, a short walk from the location of the Findhorn community of later New Age fame; an author of occult essays, a violinist, and a homeopathic physician, he became the public face of the H.B. of L. as soon as it went public in 1884. When the Brotherhood collapsed under Theosophical assault a few years later, he (like Burgoyne) headed for the United States. Davidson settled in the little town of Loudsville, in White County, Georgia. He remained active in occult publishing and writing from that very rural location until his death in 1915.

Good Evening,

I hope everyone's New Year is already heading the way you would like, and keeps on doing so. Also, thanks very much to those who responded about World Tree resources two weeks ago, I am happily digging into them - especially the "Survive the Jive" mini-documentary that an anonymous commenter shared, so thanks whoever you are!

To Share: As my first "real" post (rather than re-posting a comment from here) of the year to keep up with my resolution to blog weekly, I've written up The Open-Minded Materialist's Gentle Introduction to Spirituality (https://jpowellrussell.com/#open-minded_materialists_gentle_introduction_to_spirituality). It came to me that I a still in a "sweet spot" where I recall what it was like looking at the world as a materialist, but I've changed my views enough to explain why I don't anymore, and I thought that might come in handy for folks unhappy with the meaning in their lives, but unsure about how to approach spirituality. I doubt anyone here will get much from what it has to say, but I'd very much welcome any thoughts on how to make it better, either via email (at the foot of the post), or on the dreamwidth comment thread here: https://jprussell.dreamwidth.org/2505.html

To Ask: For JMG or the commentariat: any recomendations for works, themes for meditation, or other avenues for exploring the Indo-European tradition of giants/titans/jotnar/etc? From what I've found so far, looking at them /only/ as "like Gods, but bad" or "representations of primitive/chaotic nature forces" or the like is overly simplistic, but likewise seeing them as "just another category of Gods" also doesn't seem to square with the mythology.

As always, thanks very much to JMG and those who read and comment for all that you share.

To any who will have them, I put forth my blessings and best wishes,
Jeff

Anger Statement or Affirmation

From: [personal profile] cs2
I've been struggling with anger for a year. I used the DA 7-Fold Wheel of Thought to examine it and an idea popped into my mind along the lines of "Actively choosing and owning my own life is the solution to my anger."

The anger stems from my not being active in my life and letting circumstances, inertia, fear/anxiety, or other people rule me. This year I'm going to build my will and take action every day to get myself out of this.

I'm already doing a different affirmation this year, but I am wondering if I could use this statement whenever I feel the anger coming on: "Actively choosing & owning my own life is the solution to my anger."

Do you think that could work, or do you think having a statement that says the word 'anger' in it might affirm my anger? I jouraled 20k words last year. That's a lot! Thank you.

Hi JMG,

Long and wild story short, my husband Trevor is in the ICU with pneumonia and several broken bones.

May I ask you to send positive energy to him?

I’ve added him to Tunesmyth’s growing prayer list as well.

Thank you JMG, and all who send prayers in which ever form. Husband too says thank you.

Friends making silly mistakes

Date: 2023-01-09 05:29 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
I have a friend with little/next to no knowledge of the occult outside of (as far as I can tell) popculture knowledge. However he has been doing blood offering to any entity that can help fix his problem regardless of cost to himself. I am worried this will cost his soul extreme tormetent after he dies (at least for some time) becouse he is rather ignorant about what he's doing. Is there anything I can do as a third party to protect him, other then the mundane act of educating him to not do this? Any ritual I can preform to sever any ties he may have made to potentially malicious beings before any potention quote Un quote "dues are meant to be paid" so his soul doesn't suffer!

Uruguay

Date: 2023-01-09 06:09 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Dear JMG,
I was at a meeting of Freedom-Loving Canadians last Friday. I mentioned that I had just started thinking of running away to Uruguay in the previous week. I have always thought such actions the height of folly before but it suddenly became attractive to me. Three other people in the group reported also suddenly thinking of running off to Uruguay in the past few days.

There were only nine of us there that night. How very odd that four of us should have thought of running off to the same South American country in the same week. I believe we are all under surveillance by our Federal Government. The RCMP let me hear they had tapped my phone (we could hear their radios and people walking around the office) as a way of intimidating me. I told them to go do something inappropriate to their mothers and there was a loud click and the line went clear.

I did a divination to see what the result would be if we did flee to Uruguay and it was positive.

What do you make of us all having the same obscure idea the same week?
Maxine

Autism and Reincarnation

Long time reader, recent practitioner here. I'm about 3 months in working with the Druid Magic Handbook. Interestingly, daily practise seems to have made it quite easy for me to also adopt a regular writing habit - as well as other benefits.

I've appreciated your occasional comments on Aspergers Syndrome, as I am of similar neural wiring. I'm curious as to whether, based on your exploration of past lives, how autism/aspergers relates to that. Is it tied to a specific incarnation? Is it something that repeats with each? Does it ebb and flow?

Thanks

Stephen

Octagon Society - Law of Acceptance

Date: 2023-01-09 07:55 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi JMG,

First Question
--------------
I'm working my way through the Octagon Society instructional papers and am busy with the Law of Acceptance (0/8). My first question is about the mechanics of the Breath of Acceptance.

The text states: "Imagine this person standing in front of you during that period of time between your in breath and your out breath."

The next instruction is: "... telling the other person, place or thing, as we imagine them during our meditation, that we know there were reasons for the things they did."

Does this mean that one imagines the person during the pause between inbreath and outbreath, carry on breathing and then start the conversation in your head with this person?

Or does it mean one imagines the person during the pause between inbreath and outbreath, have the conversation in your head with this person and then carry on breathing?

Second question
---------------
The text states: "Begin by accepting the fact you are an individualized expression of the Divine."

I'm having trouble with this because I have not figured out what "Divine" means to me. I know at the start you mention that one needs some kind of belief in divine powers to do this work and I'm trying to do that at the same time as doing the OS work. At the moment the druid path (as far as I understand it) feels the most natural to me and I use those deities in my SOP work. I have bought The Druid Path and am about to start reading it.

I have also started to read A Guide for the Perplexed (have reached chapter 4) and so far everything makes sense to me. So at the moment I'm telling myself that the Divine is that entity that can instigate or create factors x y and z in the world.

I was wondering if you or any of the commentariat could help me with some ideas of how to think about the divine in a simple but practical manner so that I can carry on with the OS work because I really need to do this. It feels like my last hope of improving my mental health.

Thanks

Ecosophia Prayers

From: [personal profile] tunesmyth
To those who are interested, here are all of the requests for prayer that have recently appeared across the Ecosophia community. Please feel free to add any or all of them to your prayers.

This week I’d like to highlight three prayer requests by people in the hospital or scheduled for surgery. I hope some here will consider giving them a prayer even if they don’t intend to visit the main prayer list.

Ottergirl/Valerie's husband Trevor, for healing and good fortune regarding his current hospital stay, for viral pneumonia, a dislocated shoulder, two broken bones, and a Covid positive status which prevents Valerie from seeing him.
•Jay Crystall, who is going into surgery on the morning of January 10th for a resection of a portion of colon due to Stage 1 colorectal cancer, for a smooth operation, his healing, and for an overall positive outcome. (PLEASE NOTE that due to Jay being in an Asian time zone, 1/10 comes earlier than for North America; his surgery is due to begin a few hours after JMG is likely to approve this comment.)
Lloyd, who will undergo jaw surgery on January 12th, for healing and a positive resolution

If I missed anybody, or if you would like to add a prayer request for yourself or anyone who has given you consent (or for whom you hold power of consent) to the list, please feel free to leave a comment below and/or at the prayer list page.

Finally, if there are any among you who might wish to join me in a bit of astrological timing, I pray each week for the health of all those with health problems on the list on the astrological hour of the Sun on Sundays, bearing in mind the Sun's rulerships of heart, brain, and vital energies. If this appeals to you, I invite you to join me.

LRM and music

Hello!

I practice LBRP + MP. Last night, out of the blue, I decided to have some classical music in the background while performing the rituals.
Interestingly enough the ritual felt better and more pleasant.
So my questions are:
(1) Is it OK to have some background music while perfomring the rituals?
(2) Anyone else did the same?
(3) Is there a place for music in LRM systems?

Many thanks!

Caging the Gods

I happened upon this blog post featuring some photos from Indian temples:

https://aryayogi.wordpress.com/2015/09/13/where-karma-dies-in-the-seed-perur-pateeshwara-shiva-temple/

They include dazzling statues of gods and heroes, but the author mentions that the government has confined these statues inside ugly metal cages in order to protect them. It can't be understated how much the cages ruin the appearance of the sculptures. What are the implication of people caging their sacred images in this way? The author writes "such is so called progress." Is the caging of the divine an imperative of the Progressive faith that the Indian antiquities bureau is subconsciously carrying out?

Last week there was a question of if maintaining an emergency fund is a magic act that will in itself prevent emergencies. If this is so -

1. What else could be stockpiled with similar positive effects?

2. How does this relate to the Law of Flow? It seems like that should reward just-in-time production rather than maintaining an inventory.

What happens if someone sells their soul to more than one demon? Do the demons have a kanban board somewhere to make sure that doesn't happen? :)

In Garth Ennis' run on Hellblazer there was a plot where John Constantine realised he was dying. Knowing the Devil was already out to get him, he sold his soul to two other demons. When he died the three had to agree to keep him alive as long as possible, as honour wouldn't let any of them relinquish their claim and the only alternative was devastating war.

Sometimes someone asks for a solution to a problem and you ask "What kind of magic do you know how to do?" A reasonable question but often they don't see it until it's too late to reply, so the question goes unanswered. I'd suggest that when that happens, give as general an answer as possible - such as low skill / natural magic solutions, which god to pray to, etc. You can still ask for more details as different systems of magic will have different solutions. Though it's more work, a general answer will answer the question for more people, not just the one who asked the question.

Recently, I started reading Paths of Wisdom, which is illuminating and edifying. I look forward to moving slowly but surely through the tradition with these two texts as my guide.

I’ve read your book “Circles of Power” and I’m curious to learn more about elemental spirit work—specifically, what are some of the kinds of things that elemental work is good for, and what can be accomplished with it. Do you go into this sort of thing in further detail in other works?

A couple things to share:

- An observation for those interested in Jung and superior types. I was doing a computer programming puzzle to test my skills the other day, and it was a difficult one. I noticed that I would try to reason through the problem, thinking of the logic and the program flow, until I hit a limit. I couldn't think through it and found that my mind responded by switching to intuitive guesses about how it should work.

There I could see the Jungian idea of superior types at work. My mind kept hitting the limits of the thinking type and switched back to intuition, which I believe to be my superior type. I've been noticing more and more how my mind switches between the types in Jung's model lately. It was nice to see the theory born out in practice!

- Also for those interested in Jung, here are four articles I found about individuation, which I asked about a couple weeks ago. These summaries were helpful for understanding what Jung means by this:

https://jungiancenter.org/components-of-individuation-1-what-is-individuation/
https://jungiancenter.org/components-of-individuation-2-internalizing-a-locus-of-control/
https://jungiancenter.org/components-of-individuation-3-internalizing-a-locus-of-authority/
https://jungiancenter.org/components-of-individuation-4-internalizing-a-locus-of-security/

A question:
If I did planetary charity to Saturn and recited the orphic hymn to him, but with no other aim than thanking him, would that cause any trouble? Unsure if that would be something Saturn would actually appreciate or not. I get the sense he's taught me a bunch about good habits, and how to embrace limits.

Thanks!

You've written a bit about magical mistakes made by the Left (of which I agree there are many). As a right-leaning example, how about "Let's Go Brandon"? It seems to me that affirmations don't do sarcasm, and that the right wing may be unintentionally propping Biden up as they chant this phrase at sports events and paint it on their barns. On the other hand, it's never far from the Frack You that underlies it. What are the effects of a sarcastically enthusiastic slogan like this on the recipient? (For a less political analogy you can always think about the common Southern courtesy of "bless your heart" instead!).

Taking the Plutonian out of Comics

Date: 2023-01-09 03:38 pm (UTC)

From: [personal profile] sirustalcelion
Good Morning JMG,

I missed posting on the comments last Wednesday but I am greatly looking forward to the current series of posts. I'd wondered what became of the spell for modernity concept that appeared here sometime in the past couple years.

I also finished your book on Pluto (it takes me a while to get to things!). It occurred to me that comics might be a Plutonian phenomenon- they got big in the 1930's-60's, ossified after that, and are facing industry-wide collapse. They also split the page into smaller images in order to release the energy of movement, splitting the sense of space to create a sense of time. Superhero comics, in particular, fit this mold the best.

On the other hand, words and stylized images go back to the mid 18th century, along with serialized storytelling, which would indicate a Uranian influence.

While the US superhero comic industry is dying an unfortunately well-deserved and rapid death, foreign comics (especially Japanese and Korean) are bigger than ever - a single issue of a single manga title outsold the entire US comic industry last year. What could make the difference, astrologically speaking, between the two? And would you have any recommendations for inviting a less plutonian influence in graphic storytelling?

Of the top of my head - avoiding the superhero genre, or some kind of heavily illustrated novel instead of comics proper.

I had to take quick weekend trip to NY city. Not a fan of cities to begin with, but I've noticed since I've started spiritual practices they feel a little more intense when do have to go to them. When I got home I did my daily Rose Cross Ritual and Lesser Middle Pillar. Before it, my chest and back felt tight, but after I felt light and relaxed, and extremely appreciative to be back in my little basement space.

Is there anything addtional you would suggest to clean off any etheric gunk?
