I'm not a lawyer, but a lawyer that I heard on the Peak Prosperity podcast recently had something interesting to say about religious exemptions. It seems that the law and accepted practice in the USA (before covid, anyway) is that employers cannot inquire into the specifics or evaluate the validity of your religious convictions. It should be enough for you to simply say "I refuse because of my religious beliefs." If they don't accept that, you have grounds to sue them, and precedent is in your favor.
On the other hand, losing your job and fighting it in court is not fun, so naturally you'd want to persuade them the first time.
