Yes, if they really want to. The problem is that they generally don't want to.
Obsession is only possible with the consent of the person obsessed -- demons are weak on the planes we inhabit and can't force their way in without that consent. Even if it's given, if the obsessed person refuses to cooperate and seeks spiritual help, the connection with the demon can be broken quite easily. In most cases, though, obsession is like addiction: the person in question chooses it, and until they stop choosing it, nothing and no one can change the situation.
