Hi, John. You might recall I asked if you had a handy overview of the lore of Beli on 30 May. You said nope, invoke him and find out. Well, to report back… I’m struggling with that sort of thing. When a Pagan Prays by Nimue Brown has been helpful, but I’m overcoming an upbringing that valued scholarship and discredited spirituality. Figuring out how to relate to the divine is… well… remember the unnamed narrator of Fight Club beating himself up? (Nicely done by Ed Norton in the movie, btw.)
It’s like that.
So… I settled for a petition paper asking for Beli’s help in observing Alban Heruin under some incense in my favorite old bowl. Then, while wrestling with Brown’s work, I became exasperated and said, “Could you just spark my Awen?!?” to Beli.
The next morning, I felt rather listless and web surfed a bit. Just as I noticed what I was doing, a copy of The Quest for Merlin fell into my virtual hands for a big ten dollars. You mentioned this method of buying out-of-print books in The Druid Magic Handbook, so…
You aren’t surprised, are you?
Oddly, I’m not either.
Another apparent side effect is that attractive young women are standing in my personal space – apparently, without noticing that they are doing it. (EEK! People in my space!) One’s a fluke, two’s a trend, three’s a pattern. The third time, I noticed the pay-attention-to-me-boyfriend pose was combined with a demeanor and expression of basking in warm sunshine.

1) Not really. I don't recommend getting deeply into that end of occult philosophy until you have a good general grounding in occult philosophy in general.

2) Do it in your imagination. Imagine yourself in a magical temple, and imagine yourself going through every detail of the ritual practice. That's excellent training for concentration and imagination, among other things.

Could we please have a nickel tour of the SRIA diagram?

Well, I actually gave it in the initial post: "It shows how cosmic principles are projected through the mental plane to enter into manifestation as the seven planetary energies." The seven colored dots down at the bottom are the seven planetary energies; the triangle represents the creative intelligence of the cosmos, and you can see the labels "Reality," "Realm of Light," and so on. The rose represents the twelve rays, and if you recall the discussion in the Cosmic Doctrine book club posts of positive and negative phases of the Ring-Cosmos rotating in relation to the Ring-Chaos, the vertical bars to either side marked + and - should be easy to interpret!

Thank you again for your time and effort in answering these questions - I've found not only your answers to my questions, but reading through past discussions as well, very helpful.

If anyone from the commentariat has thoughts as well, I welcome help from any corner.

• In what order is it best to do ritual, meditation, divination? From the order of the "Foundations of Magical Practice" series, and the summary at the end of the divination post, I assume the order I listed them above is the way to go, but thought I would check.
  - If the answer is something like "it depends", what kind of factors go into it? Or is this something best learned through experimentation?


• Do divination results makes for useful meditation themes? Flipped around, is meditation a good way to work through a divinatory reading? If the answer to either is "no", what makes that the case?


• Any works you particularly like for learning about nwyfre/prana/od/chi/ki/etc?


• Do you have any thoughts or recommendations for prayer and other non-magical daily spiritual practice for polytheists? I have gotten great use out of you and your wife's Pagan Prayer Beads, and from its recommendation picked up A Book of Pagan Prayer but if you have any other recommendations, I'd love to hear them. I was raised a rather lax Methodist, so I don't have a ton of experience/grounding in ritual or structured prayer.


• You've mentioned physical culture and its link to occultism a few times - do you have any favorite exercises/programs? I've used Indian Clubs and enjoyed them in the past, but haven't considered them in a spiritual context, as thinking about exercise that way is pretty new to me, so I'd very much appreciate any pointers/guidance. Given that I'm doing your Heathen LBRP and MP exercise everyday, any exercises/programs compatible with that are especially appreciated.

1) I like to do ritual, meditation, and divination in that order, but your mileage may vary. By all means experiment and find out what works for you.

2) Yes and yes.

3) I'm still waiting for a good book in English on that subject. The best I've seen so far are some of the weirder books in macrobiotic literature, oddly enough, but you've got to know the jargon.

4) Those were the books I was going to recommend. I was raised in a family that was not so much agnostic as apathetic about religion, and I don't know the literature that well.

5) Literally any old-fashioned physical culture exercise is good in this context. Indian clubs are great, so are muscle control exercises (I managed to score a complete set of Maxalding lessons online, which I've worked with extensively) and old-fashioned weightlifting and calisthenics. The Five Rites or Five Tibetans are also good robust exercises that work well with Golden Dawn-style practice.

Can something similar be done with golden dawn rituals? I found no instructions on that.

You can do that with the Rose+Cross ritual once you're good at it. You can also use the more complex GD rituals to make things happen in the world.

Boundaries for Experimentation in Magical Practice

Another question I thought of that I didn't post earlier:

In many of your responses, you encourage folks to experiment and see what works for them. Any guidelines on what not to experiment with in magical practice? From what I've seen here, it seems like you need to be careful with energy-manipulation techniques and mixing different magical traditions, but any other guidance on what is outside the realm of "try some stuff and see how it goes" would be much appreciated.

I recommend learning one magical system exactly by the book, if you want to get serious about magical training. There is often a little bit of wiggle room in the details, but you want to ask someone experienced where that is.

The places where experimentation tends to blow up are, first, when you're dealing with practices that are intended to move subtle energy through the body, and second, when dealing with spirits. Be very careful about both of those.

I don't know if you want to banish something like that because it has a place in your psyche and if you nuke it, it could move something else. I would say it is much better to uncover its origin with journaling and meditation and let yourself digest the experience that originated it by allowing yourself to feel it and pass through you. At least that is what has helped me with something similar.

Varying the planets or sticking to one?

If one were to do the planetary energy exercise described in Regardie's The Art of True Healing, would you advise sticking to one planet or varying according to the day?

For example, if my goal is to grow my business, should I use Tuesday to invoke Martial energy for vigour and competitiveness, Wednesday for Mercury to enhance my communication, Thursday for generosity, expansion and wealth and more, Friday for connection, Saturday for discipline etc?

Or just stick with e.g. Jupiter daily?

I'd choose one. Planets can cancel each other out -- Saturnine energy, for example, cancels out Jovial energy, and Mars and Venus are opposites.

Magnetic Induction by vaccine

Have you seen how some (covid) vaccinated people have developed magnetic attraction on things like coins and spoons? I thought it was a joke until I saw it with one of my father's patients. I've suspected this vaccine has a very strong etheric component and that could be the reason of weird, though not very frequent, side effects, which seem to be connected with the dantien. Also dense ethers can behave like magnetism. I am hoping for an alternative doctor to prescribe something simple to get rid of it as a stunt.

I wonder though, what could be different about this one vaccine to generate that odd effect? Has anyone here gotten that effect and if yes, did your banishings get rid of it?

Etheric trouble

Hi JMG,

about five years ago, my now 7yo daughter was at the playground with a friend of my wife. This friend has a strong case of a skin condition that's usually ascribed to an autoimmune disorder and she is, frankly, somewhat of a psychic vampire. When my wife went to pick up our daughter, the friend was breastfeeding her at the playground. My wife had a strong feeling of betrayal but they had joked about breastfeeding their respective kids in a pinch earlier, so didn't feel like she could confront her about it.

A few days later, our daughter developed the same skin condition and has had it ever since. My wife feels that it must have been a coincidence, since the condition is generally not thought to be caused by an external agent and my wife had it herself as a kid. Lately I think it may well have been that incident that may have caused something like an etheric leak or at least a disturbance in the subtle bodies.

1) Have you read of being breastfed by other women than the mother being able to cause imbalances like this in the occult literature?

2) Is there anything I can do to strengthen my daughter's etheric body or "fix" the leak?

3) Do you know of a kind of alternative health care provider that works in this direction?

My magical experience consists only of doing the SOP/mediation/divination for 2-3 years.

1) Yes. Your wife's friend is what used to be called a witch -- that is to say, someone who broadcasts negative energies.

2) It's not a leak. In all probability the friend deliberately transferred some of her illness to your daughter.

3) I'd encourage you to look for a good practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine or Ayurveda.

Bad limbs, cold fire, and a very common phrase

Happy Magic Monday, Mr. Greer! It has been mostly a week of the bizarre over here, so I have been looking forwards to this very much.

1) On Friday evening, I became entangled in an argument with one of the wildly far left social justice persuasion. It suddenly seemed that my limbs were all detached from my body at the joints, although they continued to function. The overall sensation was as though I were a jointed figure. Also, things around the room began to shake, and the name AMMIT THE DEVOURER came through my head. I know who she is, of course, and it did feel for a bit as though I were possessed by her somehow, determined to bring justice by eating evil.

Once I was able to get myself to bed, the sensations and appearances did not end. It seemed as though I were surrounded in white-silver flames -- they tickled a bit, but did not hurt. Is there any explanation for this phenomenon?

2) I have deeply appreciated your not being one to do this, but I would like your opinion on something I have run into many times in other occult/pagan circles. It runs is as follows:
- I describe something I've done, or what I've been able to do on my own, despite the group describing it as high-level work.
- Being told "You shouldn't be able to do that".
- That I did something I shouldn't be able to do is not treated as something to be trained or celebrated, but as somehow unsettling to the group.

1) Do you have any reason to think that the wokester might be practicing magic?

2) It's a common habit of teachers who aren't actually that knowledgeable or skilled, and who therefore feel competed against by their students. There are often times to say "I don't recommend doing that yet," but the fact that you can do it is a good sign, not a bad one.

My Saturn return started not long ago and practically right on schedule things started going sideways. The biggest immediate problem is my run down house falling apart faster than before. Which leads to my question. Is now a terrible time to move? Will housing related issues follow me around for the entire Saturn return or will some other problem take its place?

When you're going through a Saturn return, you have to deal with your problems -- you can't move away from them. If you move somewhere else you'll have the same problem take shape, possibly in the same way, possibly in other ways. You might want to learn home repair instead...

Disposal

One of my elderly relatives that I have to interact with very regularly appears to have picked up the energy vampire trick. Many people who have spent time in company with this individual have reported feeling utterly drained - as I have myself. About a year ago I followed the instructions here and made up a cloth bag of sea salt (can't easily get kosher salt) and 3 bent iron nails. Worn around the neck on a long piece of twine it seemed to be doing the trick until very recently. I decided that it probably needed replacing.

I opened it up expecting to see some brown rusty nails. In fact the salt had discolored but the nails were completely black. I've not seen corrosion of that nature before.

I've made up a new bag, with three more nails and fresh salt, and on the first test run it's proven to be entirely satisfactory with a full day's work completed after my visit.

This leaves me with the original, which I suspect is toxic on some level. How is this best disposed of?

Bury it in the ground if you can -- the earth will absorb the noxious energy and, essentially, compost it. If you can't, get cold water running in the sink, pour the salt into it, and then throw the nails and cloth away someplace outside your home. (A public trash can is a good choice.)

Body of Light

Hello John,

Is it true that unless we create the so called "body of light" while still alive our fate will be to suffer the "second death" and lose all our memories and actual being forever, while only an impersonal conscience remains? This idea disturbs me greatly. This would mean our common understanding of reencarnation is wrong and we do not "progress" from one life to the next, only our basest "conscient spark" gets recycled into a completely unralated and random lifetime, plus only people with occult training have any chance. The good, the bad and the most vile of men would all be discarded in the same manner in the end, recycled like empty plastic bottles...

That's a highly distorted notion of what happens. Let's go through the basics.

1) Your individuality, the part of you that endures from life to life, is not impersonal. It's who you really are. Your present personality is a projection of your individuality -- it's like a mask (which is what persona means in Latin) that you put on in infancy and take off either when you die or when you achieve enlightenment. People who awaken to their identity as their individuality (that is, who become enlightened) describe the experience as one of delight and immense relief.

2) Each personality is your individuality's latest attempt to create a manifestation for itself on this plane that will express your potential fully, and deal effectively with the karma from previous lives. Each life is the necessary result of your previous lives -- there's nothing random about it -- and all of your lives are part of the maturation process by which your individuality learns the lessons of the human level and prepares to go onward.

3) The second death has nothing to do with the personality. It's the point at which you shed your etheric body, the body of life force. If you don't go through it, you become a ghost -- that is, a soul stuck between lives, unable to go on until someone or something gets you unstuck. It's a miserable fate. Some people do this deliberately, and construct what's called an etheric revenant; they normally do this because they're scared of facing their karma.

4) The term "body of light" gets used to mean quite a variety of different things. In its proper sense it refers to the form of body each of us will have when we finish the human level and go on to bigger and better things. Some people who are in the business of constructing an etheric revenant for themselves claim that they're building the body of light, but that's a whopping misnomer.

5) The body of light is achieved by reaching enliightenment -- that is, awakening to your identity as your individuality in this life: as Zen masters like to say, seeing the face that you had before your mother and father were born. It's not an attempt to dodge karma, it's the completion and fulfillment of your journey through the human level of being.

Does that help clarify things?

I recommend going to the library and reading a bunch of books on different kinds of divination, and finding out which ones appeal to you. There are few things as irreducibly personal as the choice of a divination system -- what appeals to one person is very often useless for another. Treat it as an adventure and have fun.

Going Against Divination

What is the wisest way to go against the warnings of one's divination?

This is the first time my Ogham has warned me not to do something and I decided I would do it anyway. I examined the issue and I can see why Ogham warned me. I think it will be a learning experience even if I'm learning things the hard way. I'm willing to accept things going wrong, such as the money I spent for this endeavor turning out to be a waste. Even the worst case scenario I don't think would be the end of the world.

So I accept the risks that I can see, and I thanked my Ogham. Is there anything else I should do for this? Thank you.

a question that started about writing and then digressed

Greetings JMG,

My question is non-magical but I am amenable to solutions that involve magic as well. Though, good magic only (I don't want to insult you by insinuating that you do non-good magic, though knowing nothing of magic I don't know whether that is in fact insulting or just a reasonable precaution to mention, or whatever). I don't have any experience with magic really, just reading a fair bit about it and some experiments with meditations that didn't really seem to result in anything distinctly magical.

I have writer's block, or something like it. I really want to write, and I have written essays and so on during college, some of which I really liked. However, when I try to write now, it seems really hard, and especially when trying to write fiction or anything that is not a diary entry or a tweet / comment like this on the internet or technical stuff for work, I find it impossible to write. No sentence seems to come out well, I don't have any idea of a plot, the story doesn't seem clear in my mind, and the words don't flow. Everything doesn't work. I've read your essay originally posted on The Archdruid Report where you mention that editing brain is different from writing brain, and I've tried using that to decide not to criticize / edit my writing as I write. However, it has not let anything more flow. I don't know if I'm being subconsciously critical / in editing brain or if the problem is something else.

The problem is, when I try to write, nothing comes out, most of the time. I have spent hours wanting to write, even sitting down trying to write, and all I ever managed to write of any particular piece was 4-5 sentences.

The problem seems wide-ranging. It is partly hard to translate whatever I'm saying into words, hard to make a sentence I like, and hard to convey the image I want to convey, or the feeling. But it's also that I don't know what plot I have, or even could have -- so the problem is idea-level too. I often think of writing a story to convey a kind of vibe, or a world from which I can imagine a picture / vibe that I like, or something, but don't know where to go from there.

Actually, having written all this, I feel like one possibility is some problem I have in other areas, in which I have a very limited agency and have a mentality where I must be given the levers I can manipulate before I do anything, and need precisely defined problems and precisely defined ways to solve them, and only then, knowing I have full permission to do what I am doing, try to solve the problem with the prescribed method. I am not sure if this is the same problem as I have with writing, but maybe I am not able to do something without knowing how it will turn out in advance.

Do you have any advice?

Some people don't think in words at all, but think in (for example) diagrams, or in flow-charts and outlines, or in kinetic patterns, or whatever. I'm one of them. As a retired professor, I had to write and lecture for a living, and it was really, really hard at first. But I had to, so I just pushed and pushed and pushed, and after many years I got the trick of creating verbal surrogates for my thought without much effort.

Perhaps you don't naturally think in words, either? One of the ways to tell is if your mind doesn't constantly chatter, but its default setting is some form of wordlessness. (Wordlessness is not at all the same thing as mindlessness.)

Dear JMG,
A simple question I hope.
I have begun writing a novel, which I would like to get published, either by myself if necessary, or ideally by a commercial publisher.
I have the time and motivation to finish writing, and would be prepared to publish it myself, but there is no point if people don't read and enjoy it.
So I would like to ask the geomantic oracle "what will be the result if I finish and try to self-publish my novel?" But I am not sure what House is appropriate for such questions, ie not simply (or even mostly) commercial success, but positive reception from readers. What would you suggest?

Don't do the divination until you finish the novel. Even if it's not a success, the process of finishing it will teach you an enormous amount about writing, which you will be able to use in future projects. There is always a reason to finish your work. That's one of the most useful pieces of advice I ever got from an editor: always finish what you start.

Once it's finished, cast a house chart. The 1st house will represent self-publishing, the 7th house a commercial publisher, and the 10th house the success you desire. If the 1st house has a mode of perfection with the 10th, self-publish; if the 7th perfects with the 10th, submit it to a commercial publisher; if both do, you've got your choice.

But don't cast that chart until you're finished!

Many thanks for all your wise advice.
On a number of occasions, you have talked of "going further" beyond the three basic exercises of the GD method.
After some swerves and resets, I have settled down regularly doing the MP Exercise etc, with the Egyptian pantheon, and would like to move on at some point. But how, keeping the same pantheon? Do I just buy LRM and plug other names in ? It wouldn't surprise me to hear it's more complicated than that!

The Potency of Blessing Candles

I have been doing a daily white blessing candle for over a year and plan to do them forever in addition to my DMH practices.

At noon today on the Summer Solstice, I prayed and lit my candle, thinking this would be a very powerful time for it. I also had a synchronicity: when I asked Ogham whether I should dedicate the candle to something else I had in mind, I drew Reverse Oir, then when I asked whether I should give the blessing candle to my guardian angel, I drew Upright Oir.

What does it mean when a guardian angel wants a blessing candle? Is it that he plans to use the candle as more juice or power to help me? If that's the case, how can I strengthen my candle to give it more power, or is that only something that increases with the sharpening of my consciousness? Thank you.

At my last house I made a witch bottle and lowered it through a hole in a brick wall into the cellar, to which I did not have access. Later I had to move and by necessity leave the bottle there. Apart from his surprise when the landlord finds it, is there anything I should worry about in regards to its coming into other hands? A number of tenants have lived there so it won't be clearly linked to anyone particular.

At my current place the house is built on a cement slab, so there is no underneath space to use for a witch bottle. I recall your advising someone (who was under sustained attack; I'm not) to connect his to metal on the house and earth it to the soil. Is this appropriate for my situation? Or is the back of a wardrobe good enough?

In general, do these sorts of thing need to be decommissioned?

Archeologists dig those up in the ruins of medieval houses quite often these days. so no, they don't need to be decommissioned. As for your new location, can you put the bottle in contact with the slab? Alternatively, can you dig a pit close to the slab outside, drop the bottle in, and fill the dirt back in?

The widespread use of fear through the lockdowns and face masks, the estrangement between fellow human beings this entails, the so-called vaccines and the appalling side-effects associated with them, the coercion to get people to take the vaccines and the heavy-handed suppression of negative news about them as well as the suppression of cheap and very effective drugs like ivermectin to combat the disease and now the incredible push to vaccinate even young children, all this just speaks to me of evil.

Now, I’ve been thinking a lot of what you have written about magical defense and also about the approach taken by Dion Fortune in her Magical Battle of Britain in doing magic to promote what is wanted rather than fighting against the evil.

Along those lines, I do what I can as an apprentice mage with very limited abilities, so I wondered what you think about this and whether there is any group working in this way and to be a force for good.

Reading back my own post a little later in the day, I realize that although I deliberately wanted to be a bit vague, perhaps I overdid it. To clarify, what I think this evil represents is a lack of humanity, compassion and, yes, love, and that is what I think is needed to overcome the evil and that is what I am working for.

On my own I may be able to achieve a little, a group working for the same goals would likely achieve much more.
