1) That approach to meditation is far from the only one, and I don't recommend it to Western people. Discursive meditation, the standard approach in trad Western occultism, is more effective for most of us -- you can find instructions here (start from the bottom).
2) Oh, how special. ;-P The people who make those claims are either ignorant or lying, and I don't recommend engaging with them; those claims are good examplez of one of the less edifying traits of today's popular culture, the seething hatred of the lazy and incompetent for those who are willing to go their own way, work hard, and accomplish something significant with their lives. That said, there's a silver lining -- if they shun ceremonial magic, that leaves the potent traditional lore for those who have a clue.
3) Of course. The opposite of one bad idea is almost always another bad idea.

5) If you can get an old (pre-1980) copy of Llewellyn George's A-Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator, that's the one I recommend. (It's long out of copyright, btw, so some enterprising publisher could do worse than to reissue it...)
