Plant Cunning Podcast logoMore listening material to while away another week of lockdown!  I'm on the Plant Cunning Podcast with hosts Isaac Hill and A.C. Stauble, talking about Johnny Appleseed's America, the wider context of creative weirdness that he exemplified, and the seed of magnificence that's present in each of us. Interested?  Check it out here

(And don't forget -- March 11 is the first of the two Johnny Appleseed Days on the calendar. Celebrate it by planting an apple tree, or doing something else to commemorate an American original. Context?  My post here might be a good place to start.)

Congrats, Isaac! Sounds like it's going well. I'll have to check out your podcast.

One quibble with planting fruit trees on the 11th of March though...

Although the Moon will be in lusciously-fruitful Pisces by 09:45 EST, we'll also be in the Eld of the Moon at that point - not the time to plant to my mind - and won't be in a fruitful aspect until the 16th.

But if it were me, trying to nail a fruit planting election, I'd make it the 21st and 22nd of March, in the 2nd quarter in Cancer.

Though I know that doesn't sync with the Johnny Appleseed timing...

Cheers, y'all!

Thanks! Yeah, I see March 11th as a general day, I'll probably recite the poem then, but the actual grafting and planting might be better dictated by the moon for sure! And of course everybody's climate is different, I probably won't plant out my apples until April!

I'm not familiar with planting by the moon myself, but I have known some exceptional gardeners who swear by it. I do have a number of trees I'm intending to plant in the near future, fruit and otherwise. What exactly would the downside be of planting during the eld of the moon be? And what would make the 21st or 22nd more favorable?

Well I can report that my gardening has taken a serious upswing since I started doing it 3 years ago. There is something to it, even if it's only the awareness and observation of cycles (which I have my doubts about). Cancer is another very fruitful sign, like Pisces and Scorpio, the water signs. The Moon will ingress Cancer on the 21st. Second quarter - from 1st quarter to full moon - is traditionally the time to plant things grown for fruit/seed. So there's your election! Moon in Cancer in the 2nd quarter for planting apples. Hope that helps.

Cheers!

Same thoughts RE: Eld of the Moon and timing to plant.

I figured I would recite the poem, and then purchase grafting supplies!
