Hieronymus machineI had occasion earlier today to check up on the state of the art in radionics.  Radionics?  It's a weird hybrid of sorcery and technology, in which a variety of electro-etheric devices such as the Hieronymus Machine (an example is on the left) are used in place of the typical medieval technology of wands and star-spangled robes. Rather more than a decade ago I built a Hieronymus machine, collected all the necessary information to use it, and spent a while getting a good sense of its potentials for spirituality, divination, magic, and healing; I don't do a lot with it any more, but I've still got my endearingly clumky homebrew machine, and get good results with it when I do use it.

I was pleased to find that my old friend Joseph Max has gone from creating his own finely crafted radionics devices to selling high-end radionics machines -- his site, Aetheric Arts Labs, is worth visiting just to wallow in the glorious dieselpunk esthetic of his products. (Here's an essay, lavishly illustrated, about the construction of his first Hieronymus machine.) I was less pleased to find that there's not much else available out there, and most of it is very pricey. Joseph's machines are expensive, but they're worth it because of the quality of the materlal and workmanship; a lot of the others are pricey because the manufacturers are charging what the market can bear.

Me, I like to see occult knowledge and practice finding its way to as many people as possible, and that's difficult in this case when you have to shell out $1500-$3000 for a device that you can build for about $50 if you buy all the parts new. I have a lot of talented readers, a fair number of them can read simple schematic diagrams and build things, and it occurs to me that a lot of people just now are interested in finding a way to bring in money that doesn't depend on selling their time to an employer. So it occurs to me to wonder aloud if anyone out there is interested in learning how to make Hieronymus machines, which can sold via the usual online venues; there's apparently a substantial market, and a good practical model for a reasonable price (say, $200-$300) would likely fly off the shelves.

I've got a very substantial collection of documents on the Hieronymus machine, including T. Galen Hieronymus' original patent, the schematic of a later transistorized version, and detailed instructions for manufacture and use, which I will make available to anyone who wants them and sends me a PM or a comment marked NOT FOR POSTING with an email address. What I ask in return is one of the machines you make. Interested?  Let me know. Baffled by all this?  Well, that's why my journal allows comments...

***Update**** -- I've received an enthusiastic response to this, which is great. One resource that might be helpful to those who plan on building their own Hieronymus machine using the transistorized circuit I've included is this detailed discussion by Joseph Max. The comments are particularly useful.

***Update 2*** -- I'm temporarily suspending my offer as Magic Monday draws closer. Interest in this project turned out to be much higher than I expected; rather than the half dozen or so packets I expected to email, I've sent out close to 40, and I want to make sure I don't get a couple of hundred requests while Magic Monday is in process! I'm going to look into other ways to make information on radionics and building your own Hieronymus machine available to those who are interested; I'll post something here as soon as I've gotten that worked out. In the meantime, if you're frantic for plans, the Wayback Machine has something to get you started,  and Joseph Max's discussion of how he built one using the same circuit is not to be missed...

This works on soil fertility and plants? Is it related to what you explored in The Secret of the Temple? It's not like I NEED any new projects here, but this has the wheels turning for me.

JMG -The Aetheric Fellowship works on so many planes. What a great name! And with such a great name I hope to be able to call myself a frater of the Aetheric Fellowship, which is to say I hope your project here and interest in radionics in general gains enough traction for you to throw open the switches on this circuit.

Found it. I finally remembered where I had it hidden. Here is a link to a schematic. You want to click on the Quantum Field Broadcaster link to get to the plans.

Thanks again.

I read several books last year after you posted about radionics then, and I started playing with the printable symbolic version soon after. It's been tied up in a long-term project for most of a year, so the total number of uses has been small but the results have been satisfactory for all of them thus far. Building a full physical machine has been at the back of my mind ever since.

Interested!

Hello Archdruid Emeritus,

I am extremely interested in the results you’ve gained in your garden! I live where the soil is sandy and poor, exacerbated by an excess of construction materials remaining in the soil. I don’t have good luck with even native plants, and a lot of it is probably down to the developers raping this land. I think this is a lot more appropriate than a weekly application of chemicals in the form of Miracle Gro - which, although it will make the plants lush, results in a strangely flavorless fruit. The synchronicity between my life and my studies is quite... striking. All this to say, I’d be early in line to access information on this technology, and thank you immensely for the offer!

Thank you,
Erika

Dear JMG:

I like the idea of a dieselpunk fraternal order, it sounds interesting, it even encourages me to possibly take up radionics. On a similar note, several years ago there was the playful meme of Steampunk Druidry briefly going around, started by Nimue Brown:
https://druidlife.wordpress.com/secret-order-steampunk-druids/
There's no formal structure involved, but I'd love to see someone pick it back up and run with it. Yes, I've even considered doing this myself (like I don't have enough on my plate as is). Besides, it sounds like the perfect setting if anyone wanted to do a Weird of Hali inspired Druid practice.

Sincerely,
Anon.

I didn't want to do one of those long comments, but since JMG got me thinking,

Nice! The only account and footage I’ve seen of solidified mercury that I know is through a consecration of a linga of the goddess Bhairavi.

I would love to know more about your process and experience of how you did it as well as any resources you could share if possible. That is one of the things I hope to figure out! It certainly seems to be a very good medium for consecrations, a field I am very interested in.

You are truly a mad scientist! This is seriously cool.

I’m intrigued by the earth pipe and coincidentally enough in the farm I mentioned there are about 2 acres that need soil revitalization and they are just about to start. I’m thinking this might be a good case to do a comparative study of this technique as part of revitalizing the soil compared to other techniques. Does the earth pipe need to go through a process of consecration process like the stone on your Druidical Magic Handbook or does it work out of the box?

Suddenly I’m thinking of what the table of contents would look like of a journal called Aetheric Technologies

I even made a sweatshirt design for the welcome package:

I'm not planning to take up radionics, but I want to follow the discussions and reports. Physics appears to have reached a point of diminishing returns. Chemistry is making discoveries with nanoparticles and extreme temperatures, and there is plenty going on in biology. Aetheric science looks like a promising field for amateurs and semiprofessionals, with potential for a Thomas Kuhn paradigm shift within a generation. Science would be far more useful if it acknowledged the life force, or developed an adequate theory of consciousness, or both.

Thank you very much for this! I had not known that any baquet had survived. Here is an interesting web-site on this one:

Yeah, that dismissive tone impressed me too. Do you know of anyone making them at this time? This might just be beyond my skill level. Although, I have a friend that could do the circuitry part, but only if he is in the right mood.

I'm curious what you used for reagents. The brochure recommends against anything so crude as just putting fertilizer in the jars.
