I don't know about specific magical properties of driftwood (though the properties of the wood itself, if it could be identified, plus the property of the Water element is a good place to start...) ... but this reminded me of something.
There was an industrial music drummer & Qabalist who went by the name of Z'ev who died a few years back. He was a very interesting fellow. In addition to being a drummer he made sculptures and wrote. One of the things he did was make sculptures out of things he found mudlarking along the Thames when he was living in London. The way he collected the pieces of driftwood & other materials was his way of communing with the spirit of the river, Tamessa.
I've often thought of collecting driftwood along the Ohio or other rivers here as a way of communing with that river. You may find that a driftwood collection from Lake Michigan might help you commune with the lake?
