If you read some of the early Christian Fathers, especially from the East, your interpretation makes sense.
For them a "demon" was not a red, pointy-eared scary thing that whispered in your ear. It was being dominated by a vice - like avarice, or sloth. A vice is the opposite of a virtue, which originally meant power - a vice robs you of your power.
The grand-daddy of all vices/demons is hypocrisy - lying to yourself and others. There is a reason the Devil is described as a liar and the father of lies.
Also, hypocrisy is the one vice that cuts you off from Divine assistance, as you cannot be helped from a vice if you don't admit you are dominated by one.
So in that sense, yes, those who perpetrated the covid scam could indeed be seen as possessed in that traditional sense. And, those who go along with the falsehoods, or lie to themselves about it, are touched by that.
