Magic Monday

Midnight is almost here, and so it's time to launch a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism, and with certain exceptions noted below, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question or comment received after that point will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted.  If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 341,928th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.2 of The Magic Monday FAQ here. 

Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says.  And further:  I've decided that questions about getting goodies from spirits are also permanently off topic here. The point of occultism is to develop your own capacities, not to try to bully or wheedle other beings into doing things for you. I've discussed this in a post on my blog.

The image? I field a lot of questions about my books these days, so I've decided to do little capsule summaries of them here, one per week.  This was my sixty-first published book and my third anthology of short pieces, including all my best essays from my post-Hermetic period (the Hermetic essays were released earlier in my 2019 book The City of Hermes). It's probably the best one-volume introduction to the whole range of my ideas and interests, for anyone who wants to risk plunging down that N-dimensional rabbit hole.  It also includes my most widely cited essay, "How Civilizations Fall: A Theory of Catabolic Collapse." 1) It's something some people experience when they've fully detached their astral bodies from their material and etheric bodies.

2) That's normal in the early stages. You'll get over it -- your physical and etheric bodies will be fine when you get back.

3) Interpreting dreams isn't one of my gifts! Those are fascinating dreams but I haven't the least idea what they mean.

As for the dreams, once I described recent ones, I decided to add a bunch of others accumulated in my dreamlogs on Yahoo! Notepad. I'm not sure how many ppl even know about it, but if you have a Yahoo email, there's a Notepad feature which lets you save text to their servers; quite useful.

I forgot to mention, in the recent dream with the blue mirrored chamber, there was a thrumming/undulating sound in the background, a bit like charging up a spell in a video game. This was notable, since I actually heard it, as opposed to imagined sound, which is what I normally get in dreams. Hopefully that distinction makes sense.

If I may ask a follow-up: I assume pleasant dreams are higher in the astral, and darker dreams/nightmares are lower, right? Is there any reason for this, or too many reasons?

Interesting!

As for the astral level of dreams, it's not quite as simple as that. Most dreams, good or bad, are from the middle levels of the astral. Dreams that take place on the lower astral are those terrifying nightmares where everything is pitch black and you're stuck in some kind of frightening situation you can't get out of, and it just repeats and repeats. (That's the normal state of consciousness on the lower astral.) Dreams from the upper astral are not merly happy, they're luminous, sometimes lucid, and very often include a lot of mythic or archetypal content.

To your 1)
Wouldn’t that be risky, what if you can’t return to your physical body? Your incarnation isn’t up yet so your astral could become a .. ghost? You could get stuck in a limbo.

Lots of people are frightened by that idea, but it doesn't happen. The great challenge is staying out of your body -- there's a constant suction drawing you back in.
