I recently discovered a name for these people who inflict their inflated egos on the rest of us: Socrates' double ignorant. If they also think they are doing good, they are even more dangerous. Socrates' concept of double ignorance comes from his distinction between two types of ignorance: 1. Simple ignorance: This is when someone is unaware of a particular subject or truth, but recognises their ignorance. They admit: "I don't know". 2. Double ignorance: This is when someone is ignorant but thinks they have knowledge. They are unaware of their ignorance and mistakenly think they understand a subject.
Similar concept to the Dunning-Kruger effect and NNT's IYI, but I find Socrates' version more compelling.
