You're creating a false dichotomy where none needs to exist. You don't have to choose between planting trees and praying for them; you can do both, and I can tell you as a matter of fact that a great many people do this all the time without ill effects. ;-) More broadly, most of the serious occultists I know also hold down regular jobs, have relationships, and function at least as well in the ordinary world as the next person. If anything, their magic makes them more functional in the world, not less.
A crucial point to keep in mind here is that you're actually doing magic all the time. You just aren't conscious of it, and so your magic generally ends up tangled and self-defeating. Since you're doing it anyway, you might as well make it conscious and get good at it.
