That's fascinating. I remember reading Eric Berne's books fifty years ago, but had completely forgotten them. I will follow that idea up. If I may ask a supplementary question, then meditating on this issue for some time now, I have repeatedly come up against the belief that what I recognise as handicaps and obstacles in this life are attempts to ensure that I do not repeat, or punish myself for, things that I did in previous lives. (I am not confusing this with the actions of karma.) Thus, an aversion all my life to seeking or accepting positions of responsibility I'd actually like to have had is apparently linked to the belief that I had such a position in an earlier life and misused it, causing suffering to others along the way. I am thinking my way through this, but I wondered if the concept was one you were familiar with?
