This is absolutely happening - I'd been slowly noticing something was up, maybe a year and a half or so ago? A fellow internet-goer stated search engines (primarily Google) have begun prioritizing search results based on pay-for-play and advertising.
I suppose this happened to radio, and then to television, and now to the internet...
