The people who are caught up in them crash and burn in whatever messy way their own actions determine. The egregor of Nazi Germany is of course a classic example: starting a two-front war you can't win, and being leveled to the ground by Russian and American armies, is a little more lurid than most examples, but the principle is much the same.
