As for dams, I would also include odd spots where "a falls dribbles over an oddly uniform cliff" into a deep valley. That's assuming either "a flat space suitable for human habitation" or a brackish swamp behind said falls.
One immediate spot that comes to (my) mind for this would be Hoover Dam, but I wonder how things would develop along The Tennessee Valley, or behind The Three Gorges Dam.
