Magic Monday

It's a little after for midnight, so we can proceed with a new Magic Monday. Ask me anything about occultism and I'll do my best to answer it. With certain exceptions, any question received by midnight Monday Eastern time will get an answer. Please note:  Any question received after then will not get an answer, and in fact will just be deleted. I've been getting an increasing number of people trying to post after these are closed, so will have to draw a harder line than before.) If you're in a hurry, or suspect you may be the 143,916th person to ask a question, please check out the very rough version 1.0 of The Magic Monday FAQ here. Also: I will not be putting through or answering any more questions about practicing magic around children. I've answered those in simple declarative sentences in the FAQ. If you read the FAQ and don't think your question has been answered, read it again. If that doesn't help, consider remedial reading classes; yes, it really is as simple and straightforward as the FAQ says. 

The picture?  I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me. Before Gladys Plummer, last week's honoree, became head of the Societas Rosicruciana in America, her husband George Winslow Plummer was the head of the order. For all practical purposes, he was also the founder; his teacher Sylvester Gould, whom we'll discuss next week, started the ball rolling, but Gould died suddenly in 1909 and Plummer picked up the pieces and went from there. Plummer was an enthusiastic Freemason and had received Rosicrucian initiation from Gould, but not a complete system of teaching or initiation; he created those by close but not uncritical study of the Rosicrucian and occult literature of his time, and tried to find common ground between occult teaching and science. He was also a devout if eccentric Christian, and ended up being consecrated as a bishop in an independent church with connections to the Orthodox churches. Though I don't share his religion, he's one of the role models from whom I've tried to learn.

Essene Healing Hands

I'm trying the Healing Hands, and so far I never clearly "feel" anything no matter how long I leave my hands together or over an impaired body part. I'm not psychically perceptive in general. Should I fall back on imagining that I feel something, or just close it out on the assumption that something happened even if I can't feel it? Or assume that if I can't feel it, I can't do it? Thanks!

Some people, especially those with a strong oppositional streak, won't let themselves feel anything when doing exercises like this. I've found that this is much, much more common as a source of lack of psychic perceptiveness than any of the other causes. If you want to proceed with the practice, by all means; simply do seven slow breaths at each stage, and watch your emotional reactions. If you find yourself getting angry, frightened, or feeling some other emotional reaction that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the circumstances, you might consider journaling on the subject and seeing what childhood experiences, or what have you, might lie behind it.

(Not OP.) I just tried the empowering hands step of the exercise, and I also didn't feel anything clearly while doing it, but after stopping it's felt sort of like those videos where you see a high-voltage power transmission line switch opened and a spark arcs across the gap continuously, and now I feel very slightly dizzy. Is that...expected? (I wasn't expecting it, from the description, anyway...)

It's not expected, but it's one of the things that definitely happens. Next time you practice it, try directing the healing energy through your palms to a part of yours or another's body that needs healing -- it sounds as though you have a lot of energy available and it needs somewhere to go.

Well, I can be a bit oppositional, and can't swear that I lack subconscious fears, but consciously, I reeeelly want this to work, because I have a chronic injury that every practitioner I've seen has made worse, and I'm getting desperate! So if I did feel something I would turn handsprings ... if I could use both arms. Anyway, I'll try going with seven slow breaths and trying not to have too many expectations.

In that case, your great challenge will be to avoid stressing out about whether or not the healing process will work. Take it slow and easy, and add in the reflexology work as soon as we get to that -- you'll be working on your hands and feet only, so the influence on other body parts is indirect and therefore much gentler.

I’m not super skillful at picking up such things either, but with very committed attentiveness, I found it’s possible to notice subtle changes that tell me there’s something going on.

Look for sensations like temperature change, buzzing, twitching, or even images that spring to mind, or general shifts in feeling.

For me, I didn’t/don’t yet feel much, anywhere, except my right palm. There’s increased warmth, and then I notice that though the sensation of my hands touching remains, in actuality, they separate from each other (in my case), like magnets repelling each other.

I practiced on my dying cat and had flashes of imagery.

Then, after he died and I was working around the house feeling generally a bit tense, I did it for my own heart and there was a visceral sense of relaxation and opening up.

But all of this was incredibly subtle (and easily brushed off as “imaginary” - which it probably IS, but in a deep sense).

My total newbie advice is keep at it, take it slowly, note all your reactions and see what repeats.
