Some people, especially those with a strong oppositional streak, won't let themselves feel anything when doing exercises like this. I've found that this is much, much more common as a source of lack of psychic perceptiveness than any of the other causes. If you want to proceed with the practice, by all means; simply do seven slow breaths at each stage, and watch your emotional reactions. If you find yourself getting angry, frightened, or feeling some other emotional reaction that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the circumstances, you might consider journaling on the subject and seeing what childhood experiences, or what have you, might lie behind it.
