As for the Angelou quote, I think it depends on whether one interprets it in a "ser" or "estar" sort of way. In terms of seeing people as they are rather than as I want them to be, yes. In terms of suggesting that people can be permanently defined (and therefore dehumanized) based on their beliefs or actions in the moment, not so helpful.
