Numerology: The Time Number

In the two previous posts in this sequence we’ve talked about the two basic numbers used in classic numerology, the birth number and the name number.  Several people have posted wondering what the sum of those two numbers might mean. That sum does have a meaning, but it’s not an obvious one:  it’s your own personal time number.

Every year, of course, has a number, and every day of every year has a number, which consists of the year number plus the month number plus the day number.  (Oddly enough, nobody back in the day seems to have tracked months as independent factors with their own numbers and influence—just years and days.) You can take the year number 2022, for example, and add the digits together to get 6; 2022 is therefore a 6 year, and has certain general characteristics as a result. Similarly, the digits in 28 January 2022 can be added together—2 + 8 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 2—to give you a day number of 8, and that day has certain general characteristics as a result.

It’s a matter of common knowledge, however, that you don’t necessarily have the same kind of day, or the same kind of year, as everyone else. That’s where your time number comes into play. As usual in numerology, the way this works is very simple; you add your time number to the day or year number, and that tells you what that day or year will bring to you.  If your time number is 6, for example, 2022 won’t be a 6 year for you—it’ll be a 3 year (6 + 6 = 12, 1 + 2 = 3). In the same way, if your time number is 3, 28 January 2022 may be an 8 day for the world in general but it’s an 11 day for you.

If you haven’t done so already, work out your birth and name numbers, and add them together before we go on.

Got it? Here’s what the numbers mean.

1. Ruled by the Sun, this is a number of new beginnings and opportunity. This is a time of practical action and constructive change, focused on a single achievable goal.  It's a good time to take direct action and to start new things in motion, so long as they aren't complex or roundabout. It’s a bad time to negotiate deals and contracts, for example, but fortunate for signing them if you’ve already worked out the details. Move ahead forcefully during this year, make prompt decisions, and deal with difficulties as they come up rather than trying to sort things out in advance.

2. Ruled by the Moon, this is a number of ups and downs, ebb and flow, and variability. This is a time of variable outcomes and of indecision, and is unfortunate for action. Spend your time weighing possibilities and researching options rather than trying to make things happen, and let other people carry the ball to the extent that you can. It’s a fortunate time for planning and research. It is very often a time of contrasts, so that what starts badly is likely to end well, and what looks promising to begin with may well fail to live up to your hopes. The more attention you pay to balance, nuance, and maintaining your calm, the better the results will be.

3. Ruled by Mercury, this is a number of complications, minor changes, and many things to do. It’s not the time to try to focus your attention on one thing, for if you do this you’ll find obstacles boiling up all around you while unexpected opportunities slip past you ungrasped. Instead, be attentive to your surroundings and circumstances, and pursue different goals and options as the situation suggests.  The opportunities and challenges you face will all be easier to deal with if you can bring other people into the picture, for cooperation rather than conflict is highlighted at this time. Stay nimble, keep moving, have fun, and it will be a successful time for you. 

4. Ruled by Venus, this is a number of stability and steadiness, but also of being stuck in one place, of staying quiet and avoiding trouble. It is favorable for anything involving hard work and patience and is beneficial for doing personal projects and pursuing routine activities, but trying to push events to a conclusion will have bad results. If you take your time and focus on things that don’t depend on chance or on anyone else’s contribution, on the other hand, this can be a time of steady gains.  Choose a project already under way and take care of the dull, necessary things that have to be done to make it a success; later on, you’ll be glad you did.

5.  Ruled by Mars, this is a number of unexpected changes in which the risks and rewards are both considerable. It is marked by instability and sudden shifts for good or ill. New prospects may beckon, though not all of them will be as good as they look—make sure to do your research and be sure you understand the downsides before you commit to anything.  Since chance is more likely than not to break your way, this can be a lucky time, but only if you’re prepared to handle the challenges as well as the opportunities.  Don’t take unnecessary chances or to do anything on a whim, but this can be a good time to take decisive action, once you know what the dangers are.

6.  Ruled by Jupiter, this is a number of harmony and peace. It's a favorable time for ease and comfort, for settling disputes amicably, for following precedents and using established approaches. Social events are especially fortunate during this time.  If you kick back, take it easy, and encourage other people to do the same, you’ll look back on a period of success and happiness.  It's a bad time for conflict, which will prove ruinous for those who start it, and unfavorable for direct action, sudden changes, or new beginnings. Take no chances you can possibly avoid; slow and easy is the motto to follow at this time.

7. Ruled by Saturn, this is a number of contemplation and mystery. Things get weird during a 7 time period as factors you don't yet know about take charge. It is favorable for study and preparation, for creativity of all kinds, for meditation and the cultivation of your inner life, and for all things religious and spiritual in nature. Seek advice from others, and work out the details of plans already decided on. Avoid depressing thoughts, as it will be easy to be dragged down by them. This can be a lucky day for you if you pay attention to your intuition, because you will be closer to the hidden side of life than at other times.

8. Ruled by Uranus, this is a number of success earned by practical effort. Sustained work at this time brings substantial rewards, and big projects are as easy as small ones. Complexity is not a problem at this time; you can focus on the big picture rather than the little details, and it will all work out.  This is not the best time, however, for starting brand new activities in motion.  Instead, work on finishing up projects already begun. Many people find this time especially attuned to finance—it is a favorable time for seeking a new job, making an investment, or advertising the goods or services you offer—but anything that involves constructive effort on your part will thrive during this time.

9. Ruled by Neptune, this is a number of completion and karma, adding together the influences of the previous eight numbers. The cycle that began with 1 ends at this time, for good or ill, and the time will be shaped by the consequences of whatever has taken place earlier in the cycle. Your actions in previous days or years will determine how your efforts turn out. This time can therefore be wonderful, terrible, or anything in between.  If you don't like the outcome, this is a very good time to try to learn from your mistakes and prepare to try again.

11. Since it sums to 2, this number is ruled by the Moon, and under most circumstances it has the same influence as 2. If you have planned and prepared carefully, however, this is a time where you can take decisive action to achieve your goals. You can still fail by slapdash decisions, however, Choose your time well and follow your plan, and you can achieve improbable things.

22. Since it sums to 4, this number is ruled by Venus, and under most circumstances it has the same influence as 4.  During this time, however, your inner life will be more vivid and powerful than usual, and if you choose to cultivate it you can find important inner guidance and insight. Be sure to temper your inspiration with the practicality of 4, however, because it is easy to go off the deep end during this time, overvalue your inner perceptions, and go through the day or year baffled by the fact that nobody thinks that your insights are as important as you do.

So there you have it. Take some time to work out previous years and days, and see how well their numbers match your experiences.

One other thing you may find useful is the art of horary numerology, which as far as I know was just invented a few weeks ago by one of the commenters on this journal. As horary astrology is a way of getting answers to questions by calculating an astrological chart for the moment that the question was asked, horary numerology is a way of getting answers to questions by doing a numerological analysis on the time of the question. If you have a question, look at the nearest clock, and add together the numbers of the hour and minute.  Add those to the numbers of the day, month, and year, and then add your time number to the sum of those.

For example, let’s say that today you were wondering whether to sign up for a certain online class and you glanced at the clock, which said 5:49. 5 + 4 + 9 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9; to that you add today’s day number, 8, and your own time number—let’s say this is 7. 9 + 8 + 7 = 24, 2 + 4 = 6; 6 is a favorable number so long as conflict is avoided, and it’s especially favorable for dealing with people, so the answer to your question is “yes, this is a good opportunity.”  Give this a try and see how well it works for you.

Independent Meaning of Time Number?

Forgive me if I've missed this in the text, but does the time number have any "independent" meaning the way the name and birth number do? By which I mean your birth number tells you what challenge this incarnation is meant to face and your name number tells you what tools you bring to deal with that challenge, besides also being added together for purposes like those in this post.

If so, I imagine it would be something like "if your time number is 8, your days and years are likely to be more often characterized by opportunities to work on existing projects than the day/year number would otherwise indicate", but I'm just speculating.

I might start adding a daily numerology divination some days since it seems like I could it in about a minute or two.

I've never seen any system of numerology that does this. The only use of the time number I know of is adding to the year or date numbers. That said, by all means experiment with it!

Might be worth doing. I've used horary numerology several times now, with good results, and so that's going into the degree lectures for what I think will probably end up being called the Independent Order of the Golden Dawn.

In an effort to fully grasp how these different numbers play out and interact with one another, I would like to verify my understanding of the implications of my numbers:

My birth number is 5, so my aim in this incarnation is centered around learning the lessons of freedom. I will always want more knowledge/experiences/skills/etc. and I will struggle with focusing on the future in which I obtain those things instead of being present in the here and now. My internal drive, energy, and many interests fuel this restless searching. These urges often lead me to focus on my own wants and needs over those of others and to follow my own path. (This is all accurately descriptive of my life’s experience). I would do well to keep my awareness in the present and to heed the advice of others.

I’ve always just gone by my first name, which gives me a name number of 1. I’ve always tried to be a planner, but things rarely go according to plan for me, so if I stick with my 1 name number, I may be better off embracing the chaos and taking each day as it comes. Plus, the energy of this name number seems to mirror that of my birth number, so that may generate some nice synergism. Alternatively, the 4 name number is appealing to me and I could achieve it by going by my first + middle names (though that would certainly raise eyebrows and meet opposition from my wife/friends/coworkers). Would pairing a 5 birth number with a 4 name number potentially have a moderating effect on my restless nature, or would the two clash and lead to repeated “head slamming”?

My time number is 6 (if I stick with my first name), making this year a 3 year for me. It seems like the nimbleness of a 1 name number would at least serve me well for this year! I would do well to keep moving and focus on making things happen throughout 2022.

Yes, that's how it works. There are a couple of minor numbers we'll get to shortly, and also the effects of number combinations in relationships and the like, but those are secondary factors; these three are the main ones.

So, I found my birth number 7 to be very accurate; the name number (a 1 for first and last name/plus middle initial or 3 for full name) to be less so, or at least I don't see them active in my life. It was the same for my partner. But then I saw people in the comments of the last post talking about nicknames rather than given names. We both call each other by a nickname, picked up in the way nicknames are, and my social life being what it is, that is the name I hear far, far more often than not. So I put the nickname through the calculator and what do you know, another 7! So maybe there is something to that (it was the same for the partner as well, the nickname number seemed closer than the given name).

Between all these names, I guess I got my pick of time numbers, some good some not so good for the year to come. I've been having a really miserable time being stuck for the last many years, I'll take whatever option will blast me out of this holding pattern once and for all.

What if your name and time numbers are the same?

I've still been working with horary numerology and have still been finding it quite congenial.

One thing I've been considering is the exact difference between "is it a favorable time to" and "what will the results be if."

I've been thinking that "favorable time" would indicate that the you'll be taking the action at a time with the qualities of that number, while "outcome" would indicate that the outcome would have the qualities of that number. So, a 1 is a favorable time for starting something new, but a 6 isn't. On the other hand, a 6 is a good outcome, and a 1 suggests that you'll immediately be moving on to something new once you finish (but will be put in a good position to do so, so it's favorable but not stable).


In your example, you interpret a 6 as positive for taking a new class, so I think that means you're thinking out the outcome?

I have once more ended up with nine as my number. Is there something I am missing? Am I destined to be a nine? Do numbers work like that?

I guess my traumatic brain injury was a reset or break between before and after - ending of cycle, beginning of next. My personality changed as a result of the TBI.

1) If I go by different names in different settings would it make sense that the different settings would yield different outcomes as portrayed by the time number calculated using the appropriate name?

2) At work I go by one name, with friends and family by another and such. Do you think it would be a better idea to go by the same name everywhere? Now that I think about it, I think it even prompts different personalities completely that seem to go with the name number, a little of that might be useful but too much seems like pulling in too many directions.

3) I think I need to change my handle for your journal. open_space is a 5 and hard to take advice is hardly a good idea when I come here for advice and instruction! I also never really liked that name. Hmm. I might also see, before changing it, what is the time number for this year for it. Would the birth number of a handle be the date I created the account?

In horary numerology (and horary astrology), I'm guessing that the moment the question was asked is the moment the question was _naturally_ asked, or naturally first asked of the one to first do the calculation, or the like? It seems like, otherwise, one could do the calculation first to _pick_ a moment to ask the question, and thus just get the answer one _wanted_ whatever relationship that might or might not have to reality.

Also, I commented on a previous post in this series that it looked fairly likely I'd changed what my most commonly used name was without noticing. After discovering that, I tried to figure out when it had happened, and the most likely period to me, based on events I remembered, seemed to be the second half of 2016 and/or/to the second half of 2017 (though with a possible extension back into 2015). Well, looking at the personal year numbers now, 2016 was a 5 year for the time number of the older name, while 2017 was a 1 year for the suspected newer most commonly used one. So... that does seem to fit with the hypothesis.
(Though I'm still not sure to what extent they might _both_ be active, how exactly one might apply more than the other in different contexts, or how that balance has changed over time.)

This is fun. I've been seeing if the time I get out of bed makes a difference. This is just a start, but if I get up when the time adds up to 4, I feel more energy to get things done. It's almost a manic feeling. The other day I got up when the time reduced to 9 and I managed to be more positive towards others at work. I'm using my computer time since it's always updated and I figure that we have a group consensus around atomic clock time.

I don't know if my personal numbers figure into this yet, but it seems to be working nonetheless.

If you let everyone know that from now on you're going by (new name), and stick with it, then you change your time number. Remember, though, that being stuck isn't something that numerology can fix -- you have to unstick yourself, and since you have a 7 birth number, that takes planning followed by action followed by consistent follow-through.

For some people, yes, it works that way. If you have a 9 for either your birth or name number, then the other number will also be your time number; if you have 9 for both birth and name number, then the time number will also be a 9. That means that this is a 6 year for you, so kick back and enjoy yourself!

2) Good question. If different personalities fit the needs of different situations, I can see the point of using different names.

3) If it's your handle, your birth date remains the basis of the birth number no matter what.

1) Yes. If you do the calculation first, you won't get an accurate reading, just as you won't get an accurate tarot reading if you sort through the deck and pick the cards you want. That said, there's also such a thing as electional numerology -- choosing a time for action that corresponds to the results you want.

Okay. I worked out the basics. Now, the name number on my name tag, rent check, and anything I sign, gives me a time number of 2, and its prescriptions for action (or non) and how to handle things is dead-on.

The name I go by verbally, first & last, give me a time # of 7, which reads almost like a supplement to 2: here's what you do in your inner word.

And the mere first name nickname, or how I'm addressed, gives me a 9. Or in the family, a 5. Scratches head - we Americans have as many variants on our names as the ancient Romans did! (e.g. "Caesar" was not the family surname, which was "The Julians." It later became a title, of course, and how everyone addressed him.

(Oooh - just imagining the time number generated by what Caesar's light-of-love called him. Something like "Pookie," maybe. Chortle, giggle, LOL.

Right now, of course, will try both 2 and 7 to see how it plays out.

I'm still working with it, but so far I've gotten good results when I was really specific with the question and also when I wasn't. Perhaps, "what would the answer seem to be saying to me?" is a better approach than getting too rigid about it.

Asking about this, I got a 7, which I suspect might mean something like keeping an open attitude toward intuition is a better than trying to decide on a cut and dry interpretation of every detail in advance.

Perhaps I am understanding incorrectly, nor do I mean to nitpick annoyingly but I think the right way of doing it is either picking the year (2022) or the full date including month and day (Jan 29, 2022). Then add that to your time number to get the result, JMG should maybe confirm this, I think you number for today is:

Time number (6) + todays number (9) = 15 which implies => 6.

This one is for JMG, does the day number color the year number? Meaning, does the year number still affect the day of that year the way eclipse charts and such modify ingress charts?

I've never seen any discussion of an independent meaning for the time number, in any book of numerology. That said, your mileage may vary.

If I cycle through the years I never get just a "2" but always an "11" for those particular "2" years. Is this how it should work? Does that mean for certain people a "2" year is always more "2ey" than for others?

Yes, that's how it works, and that suggests that you get days and years with an 11 vibration rather than a 2 vibration. It's just one of those things.

FWIW, I just asked "Should I start practicing horary numerology, looked at the clock at saw 3:25. # + 2 + 5 = 10 -> 1 + 0 = 1, a favorable sign for new beginnings.

(OTOH, when thinking the question, I accidentally thought "horary astrology" out of habit, and didn't have time to correct myself before I noticed the clock. I assume the intention counts in cases of simple misspeaking/misthinking?)

Counting in months as well as days looks weird

Do you mean they looked at what position the day had in the year as a whole? It seems like that would give very different results than counting in the months as well.

For example: February 1, 2022, is the 32nd day of the year. Counting strictly by days (and without adding in your own personal time number) this gives 3 + 2 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 11. But using the month like you show in your article above gives 2 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 9. Obviously 9 and 11 are very different. So how did people calculate days in the past?

Also it looks a little odd that January 31 2022 is 1 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 11 or 2, but the very next day seems to be 9 and not 3. (The sum doesn't skip around so much if you count strictly by days, from 1 up to 365, and ignore months.) Am I confused?
