Always thank the animal. Hunting cultures very often believe that the animal deliberately gives you its flesh to eat, to sustain your life. (There's an echo of that in Christian symbolism, where Jesus dies to grant you life and you eat his body in the communion ritual.) If you make a point of thanking the animal once you shoot it, and include blessings for its soul in your prayer of thanks at the dinner table, more of its kind will be willing to offer themselves for you.
