1) The guy's bad luck may be karma, or it may be something else; unless he asks you for help with it, it's not something you should mess with.
2) Every human being has a spiritual protector of the sort that Christian mystics call a guardian angel. Yours will reveal itself to you when you're ready for that. In the meantime, the occasional prayer of gratitude is a good idea.
