I think there is something very simple and powerful at play here, which seems to be a critical and very difficult part of any valid spiritual path:

the ability to say, I was wrong; I made a mistake; and I need to take responsibility for the consequences.

And sometimes there is a much harder part: the ability to say, I've been fooled.

That seems to be a rare and very hard-won ability. I know very few people who can do it, and I know how very hard it is for me.
