I'm reminded of the way that the Neoplatonists would start by working through Aristotle-- and that by beginning with the works on logic-- before approaching Plato's more mystical works. That also would have meant that you wouldn't be doing the mind-emptying meditative practices taught by e.g. Plotinus until you had a very solid grounding in logic and reason.
