I don't think that is what happened. I think that Trump thought that once he was in office that the Swamp would re-align with him, and everyone would treat him like every other President and start working with him. It's why he distanced himself from guys like Bannon and hired Swamp creatures into his Cabinet. He thought people would get with his program, I mean, he won, right?
I don't think he counted on the pure hatred they directed at him, and the constant backstabbing to undermine him. I had hoped when he got elected the first time, he would fire everyone and start fresh, but Trump was actually trying to work with the system to get his policies done and by the time he realized it wasn't going to work, he was surrounded by people who hated him and were actively working against him every step of the way.
So in this way, I am glad he lost the last election, because it gave him a chance to find people truly aligned with him, and realize just how untenable the system is. I have more hope this time around he is going to fire everyone he can and get people who will truly work toward his vision this time around, though only time will tell.
