The guy I was talking to was motivated by fear to find a way out of the situation he was in. But he was paralyzed by fear and unable to think clearly. The fear motivated him to THINK OF expressing what he didn't want but prevented him from imagining a rope ladder or way out. Very weird.
My thoughts flash to a grandparent who might have used the word 'gumption.' Or, in the vernacular, 'the guy's got no b_lls.'
I think, just to segue to the current situation, that people didn't imagine the movie of their life could be violently intruded upon by 'the pillars of civilization.' Think of how many people still believe Stephen Colbert is both astute and comedic. Now there's a guy with no b_lls!
