1) One of the basic rules I'm following in that series is that all the magic is real. There will be no magic, nor any other supernatural phenomena, in any Ariel Moravec book that people don't routinely experience in the world we live in.
2) Yes, it's a classic hoodoo protective practice. Most of Aunt Clarice's magic comes from the material I studied with my hoodoo teacher Cat Yronwode.
3) The second volume, The Book of Haatan, is already at the publisher and should be out later this year. The third, The Carnelian Moon, is within a few thousand words of completion and should be out sometime next year. I hope to have one out each year for the foreseeable future. (Yes, I have quite a few more sketched out...)
