South Africa has been in a state of anarchy the last few years, so they're breaking from the narrative is not surprising now that I think about it.
There were also huge riots in Israel last week - hundreds of thousands in the streets. They weren't related to covid, but I can't help but think the past did affect it. They had insane covid restrictions and mandated four shots total I believe (with full vax passes for shopping for groceries in effect).
