The picture? I'm working my way through photos of my lineage, focusing on the teachers whose work has influenced me and the teachers who influenced them in turn. Several weeks ago we got to Theodor Reuss, and a step back from him -- and also from Rudolf Steiner, who was honored a while further back -- brings us to John Yarker, this week's honoree. Yarker was the late nineteenth century's most prolific collector and marketer of fringe Masonic degrees and rites. Born in 1833, he became a Freemason in 1854 and never looked back. If there was an oddball Masonic rite anywhere, he was probably a member. That's why Steiner and Reuss both turned to him: they each wanted access to the 99 degrees of the Rite of Memphis and Misraim as a basis for their own initiatory projects. Steiner's Misraim-Dienst never really got off the ground, though his papers on the subject make fascinating reading, but Reuss used his charter as the basis for the Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO), which is still around in several forms. Myself, I'm not a member of either the OTO or the Rite of Memphis and Misraim; Yarker's connection with me is very roundabout -- except, of course, that I'm also a Freemason.
Buy Me A Coffee
Ko-Fi
I've had several people ask about tipping me for answers here, and though I certainly don't require that I won't turn it down. You can use either of the links above to access my online tip jar; Buymeacoffee is good for small tips, Ko-Fi is better for larger ones. (I used to use PayPal but they developed an allergy to free speech, so I've developed an allergy to them.)
