Yes, the idea behind the red thread is that it blocks energy from outside, it's particularly directed towards evil eye and other nasty energies that can make people sensitive (like me) uncomfortable; but since I am no expert I wouldn't like it to interfere in the process of the healing hands, so I added the caveat of "after". Circles in general contain, for example, when someone is performing healing on me I remove my protective necklace to allow their energy to flow more freely.
Children being sensitive, can interact badly with the mishmash of energies of modern times, sometimes people's gaze can have a bad effect which is why some women don't like their babies looked at or to interact with people outside family when they are too young. We put those to the street facing plants too, so they don't die from the same thing, the jealousy of neighbors and to keep the evil away from your home for example. So if it's something you'd like to try, I would make it after the healing has been performed. (When the string needs to be removed, it's better to burn it or untie it, not cut.)
