I'd call the notion of immutable spiritual state Manichean rather than Gnostic -- yes, it appears in some Gnostic traditions, but it is explicitly rejected by a good many others: for example, the Naassenes in the ancient world and a certain Universal Gnostic Church nowadays. ;-) Mani and his followers were much more consistent about it. "Proto-Calvinist" is an even better term, since Calvin was strongly influenced by Augustine of Hippo, who was a Manichean before he became a Christian and never really shook off Manichean ideas.
