I'd use a somewhat more recent comparison: the way parts of the Right, especially the Deep Southern* Religious Right, reacted to Bill Clinton and later 9/11. The tonal resemblance between my parents (who've gone deep into Trump hysteria) and the people I argued with/had to listen to back in my school years is distressing.
