Good gods. That happened in Providence, three and a half miles from where I live.
One of the things that makes me uncomfortable these days is remembering what Giambattista Vico said about situations like this one. He noted that when politics becomes sufficiently toxic, people get so tired of it that they eagerly accept monarchy, just so that the monarch will make the contending parties shut the frack up and let people go on with their lives. I think he's quite correct, and we could see the consequences.
It occurs to me, for example, that if a Canadian general -- let's call him Bob McDonald -- were to stage a coup, seize power, declare himself dictator, and publicly execute Trudeau and a few other people, so long as he then ordered the Covid restrictions scrapped and didn't impose any ideologically based trip of his own, he'd have cheering crowds thanking him for stuffing a sock in the mouths of the ideologues...
