The instructions in the book were written for people without physical difficulties or the ordinary problems of old age, and should be modified accordingly if you've got a disability like a curved spine. (If I were writing it now I'd include something to that effect.) The point of lying on the floor is to make you aware of where you're tense, and I doubt you have any trouble figuring that out! You can simply do the exercise on your bed.
